Abstract:We present a simple approach to realize truly random number generator based on measuring the phase noise of a single-mode vertical cavity surface emitting laser. The true randomness of the quantum phase noise originates from the spontaneous emission of photons and the random bit generation rate is ultimately limited only by the laser linewidth. With the final bit generation rate of 20 Mbit/s, the truly random bit sequence guaranteed by the uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics passes the three standard randomness tests (ENT, Diehard, and NIST Statistical Test Suites). Moreover, a continuously generated random bit sequence, with length up to 14 Gbit, is verified by two additional criteria for its true randomness.

Abstract:We propose an implementation of random number generation based on the measurement of polarization mode noise in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL). By measuring the phase difference between two laser beams with perpendicular polarization directions, a 40 Gbps generation speed is achieved with a simple post-processing method. The random sequence we generated passes both the standard statistical test suites (Diehard and NIST-STS) and 3 sigma criterion. Our setup is compact and easy for implementation, and it also has a better efficiency in extracting randomness from VCSEL compared with existing methods. (C) 2012 by Astro, Ltd.

Abstract:It is widely accepted that the core of any truly random number generator (TRNG) must be an intrinsically random physical process. However, theory of nonlinear systems and their chaotic behavior have provided an alternative way. This article chooses the piecewise-linear chaotic expression to design the RNG, analyses the influence of the expression's parameters to the iterative sequence and give the optimal scope for choosing the parameters. The TRNG is realized by analog circuit. It is composed of eight sub circuits whose structure is identical to each other and an anti-saturation circuit. Every sub circuit is composed of an operational circuit and a sample/hold circuit. Their working process is analysed. At the same time, the article also talks about how to eliminate the charge injection in the switched capacitor circuit. The chip of TRNG is taped out in TSMC with the 0.25 μm, mixed signal process. Total die area is 2.34 mm2.

Abstract:We present a simple setup to implement truly random number generator based on the measurement of the laser phase noise. From the entropy point of view, we estimate the number of truly random bits that can be extracted from the sampled Byte. With a simple method of adopting the $m$-least-significant-bit, we amplify the entropy of the original bit sequence and realize a truly random bit generation rate of $300$ Mbps.

Abstract:Based on the intrinsic random property of quantum mechanics, quantum random number generators allow for access of truly unpredictable random sequence and are now heading towards high performance and small miniaturization, among which a popular scheme is based on the laser phase noise. However, this scheme is generally limited in speed and implementation complexity, especially for chip integration. In this work, a general physical model based on wiener process for such schemes is introduced, which provides an approach to clearly explain the limitation on the generation rate and comprehensively optimize the system performance. We present an insight to exploit the potential bandwidth of the quantum entropy source that contains plentiful quantum randomness with a simple spectral filtering method and experimentally boost the bandwidth of the corresponding quantum entropy source to 20 GHz, based on which an ultra-fast generation rate of 218 Gbps is demonstrated, setting a new record for laser phase noise based schemes by one order of magnitude. Our proposal significantly enhances the ceiling speed of such schemes without requiring extra complex hardware, thus effectively benefits the corresponding chip integration with high performance and low implementation cost, which paves the way for its large-scale applications.

Abstract:The speed of a quantum random number generator is essential for practical applications, such as high-speed quantum key distribution systems. Here, we push the speed of a quantum random number generator to 68 Gbps by operating a laser around its threshold level. To achieve the rate, not only high-speed photodetector and high sampling rate are needed but also a very stable interferometer is required. A practical interferometer with active feedback instead of common temperature control is developed to meet the requirement of stability. Phase fluctuations of the laser are measured by the interferometer with a photodetector and then digitalized to raw random numbers with a rate of 80 Gbps. The min-entropy of the raw data is evaluated by modeling the system and is used to quantify the quantum randomness of the raw data. The bias of the raw data caused by other signals, such as classical and detection noises, can be removed by Toeplitz-matrix hashing randomness extraction. The final random numbers can pass through the standard randomness tests. Our demonstration shows that high-speed quantum random number generators are ready for practical usage. Abstract:We demonstrate a high bit-rate quantum random number generator by interferometric detection of phase diffusion in a gain-switched DFB laser diode. Gain switching at few-GHz frequencies produces a train of bright pulses with nearly equal amplitudes and random phases. An unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer is used to interfere subsequent pulses and thereby generate strong random-amplitude pulses, which are detected and digitized to produce a high-rate random bit string. Using established models of semiconductor laser field dynamics, we predict a regime of high visibility interference and nearly complete vacuum-fluctuation-induced phase diffusion between pulses. These are confirmed by measurement of pulse power statistics at the output of the interferometer. Using a 5.825 GHz excitation rate and 14-bit digitization, we observe 43 Gbps quantum randomness generation.

Abstract:Random number plays a key role in information science, especially in cryptography. Based on the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics, quantum random number generators can produce genuine randomness. In particular, random numbers can be produced from laser phase fluctuations with a very high speed, typically in the Gbps regime. In this work, by developing a physical model, we investigate the origin of the randomness in quantum random number generators based on laser phase fluctuations. We show how the randomness essentially stems from spontaneous emissions. The laser phase fluctuation can be quantitatively evaluated from basic principles and also qualitatively explained by the Brownian motion model. After taking account of practical device precision, we show that the randomness generation speed is limited by the finite resolution of detection devices. Our result also provides the optimal experiment design in order to achieve the maximum generation speed.

Abstract:Quantum random number generator (QRNG) utilizes the intrinsic randomness of quantum systems to generate completely unpredictable and genuine random numbers, finding wide applications across many fields. QRNGs relying on the phase noise of a laser have attracted considerable attention due to their straightforward system architecture and high random number generation rates. However, traditional phase noise QRNGs suffer from a 50\% loss of quantum entropy during the randomness extraction process. In this paper, we propose a phase-reconstruction quantum random number generation scheme, in which the phase noise of a laser is reconstructed by simultaneously measuring the orthogonal quadratures of the light field using balanced detectors. This enables direct discretization of uniform phase noise, and the min-entropy can achieve a value of 1. Furthermore, our approach exhibits inherent robustness against the classical phase fluctuations of the unbalanced interferometer, eliminating the need for active compensation. Finally, we conducted experimental validation using commercial optical hybrid and balanced detectors, achieving a random number generation rate of 1.96 Gbps at a sampling rate of 200 MSa/s.

Abstract:We present a random number generation scheme based on measuring the phase fluctuations of a laser with a simple experimental setup. A simple model is established to analyze the randomness and the simulation result based on this model fits well with the experiment data. After the analog to digital sampling and suitable randomness extraction integrated in the field programmable gate array, the final random bits are delivered to a PC, realizing a 5.4 Gbps real time quantum random number generation. The final random bit sequences have passed all the NIST and DIEHARD tests.

Abstract:Laser-based generation of random numbers The security of our digital networks is underpinned by the ability to generate streams of random numbers or bits. As networks expand in an ever-connected way, the challenge is to increase the generation rate of the random numbers to keep pace with demand. Kim et al. designed a chip-scale laser diode that generates random bits at an ultrahigh rate (see the Perspective by Fischer and Gauthier). By tailoring the geometry of the cavity, they were able to exploit the spatiotemporal interference of many lasing modes to generate picosecond-scale emission intensity fluctuations in space and time, producing ultrafast random bit streams in parallel. Abstract:Random numbers are a fundamental resource in science and technology. Among the different approaches to generating them, random numbers created by exploiting the laws of quantum mechanics have proven to be reliable and can be produced at enough rates for their practical use. While these demonstrations have shown very good performance, most of the implementations using free-space and fibre optics, suffer from limitations due to their size, which strongly limits their practical use. Here we report a quantum random number generator based on phase fluctuations from a diode laser, where the other required optical components are integrated on a mm-scale monolithic silicon-on-insulator chip. Our device operates with generation rate in the Gbps regime and the output random numbers pass the NIST statistical tests. Considering the device's size, its simple, robust and low power operation, and the rapid industrial uptake of silicon photonics, we foresee the widespread integration of the reported design in more complex systems.

Abstract:Random number generation is an enabling technology for fields as varied as Monte Carlo simulations and quantum information science. An important application is a secure quantum key distribution (QKD) system; here, we propose and demonstrate an approach to random number generation that satisfies the specific requirements for QKD. In our scheme, vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic-field inside a laser cavity are sampled in a discrete manner in time and amplified by injecting current pulses into the laser. Random numbers can be obtained by interfering the laser pulses with another independent laser operating at the same frequency. Using only off-the-shelf opto-electronics and fibre-optics components at 1.5 $\mu$m wavelength, we experimentally demonstrate the generation of high-quality random bits at a rate of up to 1.5 GHz. Our results show the potential of the new scheme for practical information processing applications.

Abstract:Quantum random number generators are widely used in many applications, ranging from sampling and simulation, fundamental science to cryptography, such as a quantum key distribution system. Among all the previous works, quantum noise from phase fluctuation of laser diodes is one of the most commonly used random source in the quantum random number generation, and many practical schemes based on phase noise with compact systems have been proposed so far. Here, we proposed a new structure of phase noise scheme, utilizing the phase fluctuation from two laser diodes with a slight difference of center wavelength. By analyzing the frequency components and adopting an appropriate band-pass filter, we prove that our scheme extracts quantum noise and filtered other classical noises substantially. Results of a randomness test shows that the extracted random sequences are of good performance. Due to lack of delay-line and the low requirement on other devices in this system, our scheme is promising in future scenarios for miniaturized quantum random number generation systems.

Abstract:Chaotic semiconductor lasers have been widely investigated for high-speed random bit generation, which is applied for the generation of cryptographic keys for classical and quantum cryptography systems. Here, we propose and demonstrate a self-chaotic microlaser with enhanced chaotic bandwidth for high-speed random bit generation. By designing tri-mode interaction in a deformed square microcavity laser, we realize a self-chaotic laser caused by two-mode internal interaction, and achieve an enhanced chaotic standard bandwidth due to the photon–photon resonance effect by introducing the third mode. Moreover, 500 Gb/s random bit generation is realized and the randomness is verified by the NIST SP 800-22 statistics test. Our demonstration promises the applications of microlasers in secure communication, chaos radar, and optical reservoir computing, and also provides a platform for the investigations of multimode nonlinear laser dynamics.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method is proposed to generate high-quality chaotic signals using three cascade-coupled nano-lasers (NLs), and generate high-speed, high-quality random number sequences. The master NL (MNL) is subjected to optical feedback, and its output is injected into the intermediate NL (INL), which is further injected into the slave NL (SNL). In the simulation, we first adjust proper parameters so that the SNL generates a chaotic signal with a large bandwidth and time-delay signature concealment. After performing self-delayed differential processing on the chaotic signal, and utilizing an 8-bit analog-to-digital converter for sampling and quantization, followed by extraction of the m-bits least significant bit, the final random bit sequence is obtained. Finally, we use NIST SP 800-22 to test the generated random numbers. The results demonstrate that the obtained random number sequence successfully passed all tests specified by NIST SP 800-22.

Abstract:We present a random number generation scheme that uses broadband measurements of the vacuum field contained in the radio-frequency sidebands of a single-mode laser. Even though the measurements may contain technical noise, we show that suitable algorithms can transform the digitized photocurrents into a string of random numbers that can be made arbitrarily correlated with a subset of the quantum fluctuations (high quantum correlation regime) or arbitrarily immune to environmental fluctuations (high environmental immunity). We demonstrate up to 2 Gbps of real time random number generation that were verified using standard randomness tests.

Abstract:Chaotic semiconductor lasers have been widely investigated for generating true random numbers with the merit of unpredictability relative to pseudorandom numbers generated by a computing process, especially for the lasers with external optical feedback. Here, we report the first spontaneous chaotic microlaser due to the interaction of nearly degenerate modes. The circular-side hexagonal microlaser is designed and demonstrated with adjusted mode intervals in the order of GHz for the fundamental and the first order transverse modes. Four modes including degenerate modes with strong mode beating will result in chaos. True random numbers at 10Gb/s is obtained from the laser output power with a high dimension of 5.46. Our finding provides a novel and easy way to create controllable and robust optical chaos for high speed random number generation, which also paves the way for the nonlinear dynamics in a solitary laser.
