Abstract:ZnO nanomaterials based surface acoustic wave (SAW) gas sensor has been investigated in ethanol environment at room temperature. The ZnO nanomaterials have been prepared through thermal evaporation of high-purity zinc powder. The as-prepared ZnO nanomaterials have been characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. The results indicate that the obtained ZnO nanomaterials, including many types of nanostructures such as nanobelts, nanorods, nanowires as well as nanosheets, are wurtzite with hexagonal structure and well-crystallized. The SAW sensor coated with the nanostructured ZnO materials has been tested in ethanol gas of various concentrations at room temperature. A network analyzer is used to monitor the change of the insertion loss of the SAW sensor when exposed to ethanol gas. The insertion loss of the SAW sensor varies significantly with the change of ethanol concentration. The experimental results manifest that the ZnO nanomaterials based SAW ethanol gas sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity and good short-term reproducibility at room temperature.
ZnO nanowires grown on SOI CMOS substrate for ethanol sensing

Abstract:This paper reports on the integration of zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) with a silicon on insulator (SOI) CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) micro-hotplate for use as an alcohol sensor. The micro-hotplates consist of a silicon resistive micro-heater embedded within a membrane (composed of silicon oxide and silicon nitride, supported on a silicon substrate) and gold bump bonded aluminum electrodes that are used to make an ohmic contact with the sensing material. ZnO NWs were grown by a simple, low-cost hydrothermal method and characterised using SEM, XRD and photoluminiscence methods. The chemical sensitivity of the on-chip NWs to ethanol vapour (at different humidity levels) was characterised at two different temperatures namely, 300°C and 400°C (power consumption was 24mW and 33mW, respectively), and the sensitivity was found to be 0.1%/ppm (response 4.7 at 4363ppm). These results show that ZnO NWs are a promising material for use as a CMOS ethanol gas sensor that offers low cost, low power consumption and integrated circuitry.
Enhanced performance of the tangerines-like CuO-based gas sensor using ZnO nanowire arrays

Abstract:In this work, sensors based on the ZnO nanowire arrays/CuO nanospheres heterostructure were prepared by using the simple low temperature hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX) were used to characterize the crystal phase, structure and surface morphology of the as-prepared samples, respectively. The sensing characteristics of the as prepared samples were systematically measured. Obviously, the sensors based on the ZnO/CuO heterostructure exhibited excellent sensor parameters than pure CuO nanospheres. The response value of the ZnO/CuO heterostructure sensor with the growth time of 5 h (ZC-2) to 100 ppm of ethanol gas is up to 55.4 at 122 °C, which is about 8.8 fold and 3.4 fold more than that of pure CuO nanospheres (R = 6.3) and ZnO nanowire arrays (R = 16.4), respectively. In addition, the ZC-2 sensor exhibits the excellent selectivity for ethanol compared to other test gases. Significant improvement of the gas sensing characteristics was related to the formation of n-p heterojunction. The prepared ZC-2 gas sensor exhibits broad application prospects in the detection of ethanol.
Au Modified ZnO Nanowires for Ethanol Gas Sensing

Abstract:We demonstrated the application of sensors for ethanol gas detection. The ZnO nanowires based sensors with interdigital electrodes were fabricated, and a platform was constructed to test the properties of the sensors. To acquire better response and shorter response/recovery time, the ZnO nanowires were modified with Au. The ethanol gas sensing performance of the pure sensors and those modified with Au nanoparticles were investigated for comparison, and the optimal test temperature of 350°C was obtained. We found that the response/recovery time for the modified sensor towards 500 ppm of the ethanol gas was reduced by 1.35 and 1.42 times compared with the pure sensors, and the sensitivities towards 500 and 10 ppm of the ethanol gas were also increased by 3.18 and 1.35 times, respectively. These proved the enhancement of the Au nanoparticles in the ZnO nanowires based sensors for ethanol gas sensing.

Abstract:Based on the achievement of synthesis of ZnO nanowires in mass production, ZnO nanowires gas sensors were fabricated with microelectromechanical system technology and ethanol-sensing characteristics were investigated. The sensor exhibited high sensitivity and fast response to ethanol gas at a work temperature of 300 °C. Our results demonstrate the potential application of ZnO nanowires for fabricating highly sensitive gas sensors.
Highly sensitive sensor based on ordered porous ZnO nanosheets for ethanol detecting application

Abstract:<p>Ethanol sensors with high sensitivity are demanded for healthcare and environmental monitoring applications, especially in drunk driving detection. In this work, we present a high-performance gas sensor based on ordered porous ZnO (PZnO) nanosheets with a low cost. Gas sensing tests show that PZnO exhibits the highest ethanol sensing responsiveness at 307 °C to some toxic organic volatiles. The response of our PZnO based sensor is 212.0 toward 200 ppm ethanol vapor, the response and recovery time are only 8 s and 7 s, respectively. Compared with other ZnO based sensors shown in recent literatures, our PZnO based sensor exhibits faster response/recovery speed and higher sensitivity, which can be ascribed to the single-crystalline feature, more (002) facets exposure, ordered porous structure and a large amount of oxygen vacancy on the sensitive surface according to the sensing mechanism and density functional theory simulation study. The response also shows good linear relationship with the ethanol concentration in logarithm. Besides, the PZnO sensor is immune to high relative humidity. These characteristics enable PZnO based sensors for ethanol detecting applications.</p>

Abstract:In this study, ZnO nanostructures with different morphologies including nanorods, nanowires, and nanobrushes were synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process without using any structure-directing reagent. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The influence of the preparation parameters on the morphology of ZnO is discussed. Gas-sensing properties of the materials were investigated. The results reveal that all the prepared nanostructured ZnO powders show high response to ethanol, among which, the three-dimensional nanobrushes show the highest response, demonstrating excellent potentiality for ethanol sensors.

Abstract:ZnO nanosheets exhibit notably interesting gas sensing performances due to their great carrier transport and high special surface area. However, not only the 2D nanosheets tend to stack suppressing the surface area, but also the pristine ZnO cannot show desired ethanol sensing properties. Herein, segregated ZnO-In2O3 porous nanosheets are synthesized facilely via one-pot solvothermal method. The Indium doping stems the porous nanosheets stacking, as well as induces lots of heterojunctions. Due to the specific porous structure for high gas accessibility, thickness less than double Debye length, abundant reaction sites and heterojunctions, the segregated ZnO-In2O3 nanosheets exhibit remarkable ethanol sensing performance (LOD of 100 ppb, response/recovery time of 3/8 s, and great repeatability and selectivity under natural humidity for a long period). This study provides a prospect for practical applications of ZnO-In2O3 ethanol sensors.

Abstract:The uniformity and repeatability of sensing film will greatly affect the sensor-to-sensor reproducibility. In this paper, an ethanol sensor based on a surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator and uniform ZnO nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite film as sensing material was proposed. A uniform ZnO-rGO composite film was firstly formed by vacuum filtration and reduction and then transferred to the SAW ethanol sensor. This film formation and transfer process has very good repeatability and stability, as evidenced by the response of the sensors. Benefitting from the uniform composite film, the ethanol sensor shows advantages of wide response range (0~70 vol%), excellent short-term repeatability, good stability, fast response (23 s) and recovery (18 s). Moreover, a dual-mode detection method was proposed to discriminate different gases through simultaneously detecting the mechanical (resonant frequency, ${f}$ ) and electrical (impedance, ${Z}$ ) responses of the same gas adsorption based proposed sensor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on SAW sensor based on uniform ZnO-rGO composite film formed by vacuum filtration and reduction.
Synthesis of ZnO nanosheets @In2O3 hollow micro-rods heterostructures for enhanced ethanol gas sensing performance

Abstract:In this paper, the ZnO nanosheets @In2O3 hollow microrods heterostructures were successfully prepared by co-precipitation and annealing methods. It was observed by SEM and TEM that the surface of the In2O3 hollow microrods was uniformly coated with porous ZnO nanosheets, which increased the specific surface area of ZnO@In2O3 composites. The In2O3 hollow microrods functions as electron transport channels and facilitate the transfer of electrons between ZnO nanosheets, consequently elevating the base resistance of sensors. The maximum sensor response of ZnO@In2O3-2 (the molar ratio of ZnO and In2O3 is 5:2) was 269.1 for 100 ppm ethanol at the optimal working temperature of 200 ºC, which is about 30.9 times higher than that of pure ZnO nanosheets (8.7) and 19.1 times higher than that of pure In2O3 (14.1). Additionally, the ZnO@In2O3-2 composites exhibit rapid response-recovery times, excellent selectivity and favorable stability. The improved gas sensing performance of ZnO@In2O3-2 heterostructures were ascribed to its heterogeneous structure building, abundant oxygen vacancies, large specific surface area and internal electric field through characterized by XPS, EPR, and BET.

Abstract:Constructing core-shell heterostructures can effectively improve the hindered issues such as decreased sensitivity and poor selectivity from the chemoresistive gas sensors in the complex atmosphere. Herein, an effective hydrothermal-water bath treatment combined strategy was designed to obtain the unique ethanol adsorption preferred ZnIn2S4 sheet shell/In2O3 sphere core (ZnIn2S4 @In2O3) nanosphere (NS) heterostructures. Particularly, according to the characterization and gas sensing test results, the chemoresistive sensor of ZnIn2S4 @In2O3 NS-2 with the highest chemisorbed oxygen concentration shows satisfactory selectivity to ethanol vapor, and the response is the highest (54) compared to other composite controls, which is almost 4-fold of that of the pure In2O3 NS reference. Besides, the relatively lower working temperature (220 degrees C), low limit of detection (LOD, 30 ppb) and long-term stability were also obtained. The enhanced performance of the core-shell ZnIn2S4 @In2O3 NS-2 based sensor may be due to the synergistic effect between ZnIn2S4 sheets and In2O3 sphere moieties. Meanwhile, the large specific surface area from the outer shell of ZnIn2S4 sheets is also another contribution factor, which supplies the most chemisorbed oxygen sites and transportation channels to promote the interfacial gas diffusion, catalytic oxidation and product desorption. Highly Efficient Ethanol Gas Sensor Based on Hierarchical SnO2/Zn2SnO4 Porous Spheres

Abstract:In this work, hierarchucal porous SnO2/Zn2SnO4 nanospheres were succesfully prepared via a facile one-step hydrothermal method with subsequent calcination process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed in order to investigate the structural and morphological properties of the as-prepared composites. The results showed that the SnO2/Zn2SnO4 composites were cpmposed of many porous nanospheres with a uniform diameter of about 500 nm. Moreover, the as-prepared products were used as sensing material for the fabrication of gas sensor. The sensing performance of the sensor was systematically evaluated, and the sensor exhibited excellent ethanol-sensing property. The optimum operating temperature was 250 degrees C with a reponse of 30.5 toward 100 ppm ethanol. Also, the sensor showed good selectivity, stability and a low detection limit of 0.5 ppm (response 1.4). The good sensing performance of SnO2/Zn2SnO4 nanospheres can be attibuted to the porous structure as well as the heterojunction formed between SnO2 and ZnSn2O4.

Abstract:ZnO hollow flower spheres were successfully prepared by the low-cost and easy-to-operate solvent thermal method in combination with heat treatment. Characterization of the samples are finished via XRD, SEM, TEM, FIB and BET. It can be found that the growth time can largely affect the structure of the ZnO hollow flower spheres. The ZnO hollow flower spheres are regularly stacked by ultra-thin and porous nanosheets. And the size of spheres increases along with the growth time. The sensing properties of ZnO hollow flower spheres with different growth time were investigated. It can be found that the ZnO hollow flower spheres with the growth time of 4 h exhibit superior sensing performance in ethanol detection at the optimal operating temperature of 315 °C. And, the ZnO hollow flower spheres have a good linear response to ethanol in concentration range of 1-100 ppm. The ZnO hollow flower spheres based gas sensor also has good selectivity and reliable stability. The good sensing performance of the ZnO hollow flower spheres can be attributed to the hollow structure, which brings larger surface area and large number of active sites. It is believed that the ZnO hollow flower spheres have great potential in practical application.

Abstract:In this paper, the ZnO target was synthesized by the solid-state reaction method and a nanostructured thin film was deposited by the RF (radio frequency) magnetron sputtering method on a Multi-Sensor-Platform. The obtained ZnO nanostructured film was investigated as the sensing material. Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis indicated the existence of La in the synthesized ZnO material. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images of the film showed the grain sizes in the range of 20–40 nm. Sensor performance characteristics such as a dynamic response, response and recovery times, and ethanol detection range were investigated at 50–300 °C. A sensitivity was observed at extremely low concentrations of ethanol (0.7 ppm). The minimum response and recovery times of the sensor corresponding to 675 ppm ethanol vapor concentration at 250 °C were found to be 14 s and 61 s, respectively. The sensor showed a high response, good selectivity, fast response/recovery behavior, excellent repeatability toward ethanol vapor, and low sensitivity toward humidity. These characteristics enable the use of a ZnO based sensor for ethanol detecting applications.

Abstract:This paper proposes a microcantilever-type zinc oxide (ZnO) gas sensor fabricated using typical micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) process. To achieve low power consumption, we developed a long narrow single cantilever beam and the sensing region is at the free end of it. ZnO was sputtered under the atmosphere of O 2 as the sensing layer. And a thin Au buried layer was deposited to form the “sandwiched” structure of a thin Au layer between two ZnO layers. Ethanol, as a typical volatile gas, was chosen to verify the performance of the proposed sensor. The results indicate that the “sandwiched” sensing layer shows higher response to ethanol compared with single-layer ZnO, and the best sensitivity to 100 ppm ethanol is 7.11. Besides, the response time is 12 s and the sensor consumes a low power consumption of only 5.81 mW.

Abstract:Ultrathin two-dimensional ZnO nanosheets (NSs) with thicknesses of just a few nanometers have been fabricated by a solvothermal method. The very large surface area to volume ratio of this material translates into outstanding electrical sensing responses to ethanol (as high as S similar to 97 to 200 ppm of ethanol at a working temperature of 320 degrees C). Decorating these ZnO NSs with CuO nanoparticles (NPs), by pulsed laser ablation of a CuO target at room temperature and then post-annealing at 400 degrees C, yields CuO-ZnO NSs that display a further up to 2-fold enhanced response to ethanol vapour, reduced sensor response and recovery times, high sensing repeatability and high selectivity. Mechanisms underpinning the enhanced sensing properties of the CuO-ZnO NSs are discussed in terms of CuO NP-induced p-n junction depletion regions and increases in the density of active sites for ethanol adsorption and for reaction with adsorbed oxygen species. Abstract:ZnO nanocomposites doped with 2, 4, 6 and 8 wt% samaria (Sm2O3) were prepared by a novel sol spray combustion method. The samples were characterized by XRD, FESEM, EDX, UV-vis DRS and Raman techniques. The XRD results show that all samples containing various amounts of Sm2O3 have a hexagonal wurtzite structure. UV-vis spectra show that the addition of Sm2O3 did not affect the band gap of ZnO. Raman spectra exhibit that the Sm2O3-doped ZnO nanocomposite keeps the crystal structure of the bulk ZnO and possesses more surface defects. The influence of Sm2O3 dopant on the response and selectivity for ethanol detecting of the sensor based on ZnO nanoparticles was investigated. The sensors' responses were measured in the presence of 100 ppm of ethanol, formaldehyde, methanol and toluene. As 4 wt% Sm2O3 was added to ZnO, the response to ethanol at various temperatures was significantly enhanced. The results reveal that doping with Sm2O3 may be a promising route for the production of ZnO-based gas sensors with good ethanol sensing properties.
Highly sensitive ZnO nanowire ethanol sensor with Pd adsorption

Abstract:The authors report the growth of high-density single crystalline ZnO nanowires on patterned ZnO:Ga∕SiO2∕Si templates, Pd adsorption on nanowire surfaces, and the fabrication of ZnO nanowire-based ethanol gas sensors. With Pd adsorption, it was found that measured sensitivities of the ethanol gas sensors increased from 18.5% to 44.5% at 170°C and increased from 36.0% to 61.5% at 230°C.

Abstract:Metal semiconductor oxides are widely used in the field of gas sensors in recent years due to the advantages of good gas sensitivity, low raw material cost and facile preparation. To achieve more sensitive, accurate and rapid detection of ethanol gas, tetrakaidecahedral ZnSnO3 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by means of a facile template-free co-precipitation method. The nano-Ag particles were decorated evenly on the surface of the ZnSnO3 particles with a heat treatment at 250 °C. The as-synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of gas sensing test experiment show that the tetrakaidecahedral ZnSnO3 decorated by nano-Ag (Ag@ZnSnO3) sample has excellent gas sensitivity properties to ethanol at 220 °C. In particular, the composite Ag@ZnSnO3 material gas sensor has a short response time of 2 s and recovery time of 23 s as the nano-Ag modification ratio is 5%. The responsivity of the Ag@ZnSnO3 gas sensor with a modification ratio of 5% to the 500 ppm ethanol is 258 at 220 °C, which is 2.83 times of the pristine ZnSnO3 gas sensor. The minimum limit detection of the sensor to ethanol is 2 ppm. The research in this paper confirms that Ag@ZnSnO3 composite material has potential application prospects in the manufacture of high-performance ethanol sensors.
