Abstract:Although the solar-thermal technology has opened up a potential green energy harvesting method, it is challenging to suppress the non-negligible energy dissipation while maintaining a high absorbance. Most disordered organic polymers are almost incapable of limiting the absorption in the desired cutoff wavelength range, which is detrimental to the design of selective absorbers. Moreover, the development of absorbers with a periodic plasmonic nanostructure is always lacking in cost-effective scalability. Herein, we report a scalable selective absorber with a quasiperiodic nanostructure composed by an economical widespread surface self-assembly of densely arranged Fe3O4 nano-particles, possessing a high-performance energy conversion for low-grade solar energy. By investigating the scale effect of the quasiperiodic densely arranged plasmonic nanostructure, a significant solar absorption >94% and ideal passive suppression of thermal emissivity <0.2 can be obtained simultaneously. With the synergy of material properties, thermal management, and environmental effect, a flexible planar solar thermoelectric harvester is demonstrated under natural sunlight (AM1.5G), reaching a significant sustaining open-circuit voltage of >20 mV/cm2, without a heat sink. This highly versatile strategy is expected to lead the exploration of energy evolution in fundamental research and pioneer next-generation, high-performance, economical, and practical solar co-harvesting systems.

Abstract:Mobile electronic devices such as MP3, mobile phones, and wearable or implanted medical devices have already or will soon become a necessity in peoples’ lives. However, the further development of these devices is restricted not only by the inconvenient charging process of the power module, but also by the soaring prices of fossil fuel and its downstream chain of electricity manipulation. In view of the huge amount of solar energy fueling the world biochemically and thermally, a carry-on electricity harvester embedded in portable devices is emerging as a most noteworthy research area and engineering practice for a cost efficient solution. Such a parasitic problem is intrinsic in the next generation portable devices. This paper is dedicated to presenting an overview of the photovoltaic strategy in the chain as a reference for researchers and practitioners committed to solving the problem.

Abstract:Considering the terawatt global demand for energy, studies on renewable energy resources are regarded as one of the most important issues. Among the available renewable energy resources, solar energy is a strong candidate because of its abundance and clean nature. Traditional solar cells are typically not cost effective for large-scale implementation given the high processing costs. Solution-processible solar cells have been of great interest among researchers over the past few decades in an effort to lower the costs of solar technologies because they are more affordable than conventional solar technologies. In this review, we provide an overview of the major solution-processible thin-film solar cell technologies by focusing on three representative fields: polymeric organic, inorganic chalcogenide, and organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells. This review describes the historical development, material properties, device structures, and highest performance of each technology under a single-junction configuration. In addition, the challenges of each technology and the future outlook are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Energy harvesting from natural environment gives range of benefits for the Internet of things. Scavenging energy from photovoltaic (PV) cells is one of the most practical solutions in terms of power density among existing energy harvesting sources. PV power systems mandate the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to scavenge the maximum possible solar energy. In general, a switching-mode power converter, an MPPT charger, controls the charging current to the energy storage element (a battery or equivalent), and the energy storage element provides power to the load device. The mismatch between the maximum power point (MPP) current and the load current is managed by the energy storage element. However, such architecture causes significant energy loss (typically over 20%) and a significant weight/volume and a high cost due to the cascaded power converters and the energy storage element. This paper pioneers a converter-less PV power system with the MPPT that directly supplies power to the load without the power converters or the energy storage element. The proposed system uses a nonvolatile microprocessor to enable an extremely fine-grain dynamic power management in a few hundred microseconds. This makes it possible to match the load current with the MPP current. We present detailed modeling, simulation, and optimization of the proposed energy harvesting system including the radio frequency transceiver. Experiments show that the proposed setup achieves an 87.1% of overall system efficiency during a day, 30.6% higher than the conventional MPPT methods in actual measurements, and thus a significantly higher duty cycle under a weak solar irradiance.
A Portable and Efficient Solar‐Rechargeable Battery with Ultrafast Photo‐Charge/Discharge Rate

Abstract:The solar‐rechargeable electric energy storage systems (SEESSs), which can simultaneously harvest and store solar energy, are considered a promising next‐generation renewable energy supply system. However, the difficulty in meeting the demands of higher overall photoelectric conversion and storage efficiency (PCSE) with both high power density and large energy density in the current SEESSs severely limit their practical application. Herein, a new class is demonstrated of portable and highly efficient SEESS that uniquely integrates a perovskite solar module (PSM) and an aluminum‐ion battery (AIB) directly on a bifunctional aluminum electrode without any external circuit. Such nanostructural design in the SEESS not only exhibits fast photo‐charge/discharge rate (less than one minute) with high power density (above 5000 W kg−1), but also delivers a high energy density (above 43 Wh kg−1). By rationally matching the maximum power point voltage of PSM with AIB charging voltage, an excellent solar‐charging efficiency of 15.2% and a high PCSE of 12.04% are achieved, which is among the best in all reported portable SEESSs. Moreover, enhanced PCSE is observed as the light intensity decreases, which makes such SEESS immune from the geographical location and climate limitations for diverse practical applications.

Abstract:Owing to the rapid increase of world population and the energy used by per person,the total elec?tricity consuming is growing even more quickly in modern society than before. Among various green energy technologies,photovoltaic power generation is undoubtedly a very promising technology. Although the tradi?tional silicon-based solar cells have made great progress,there is still a gap of the cost performance between silicon photovoltaics and the traditional energy. Therefore,it is urgent to develop low-cost and high-efficiency solar cells. However,the application of new-type solar cells has been double tested by poor stability and rela?tively low efficiency. Interestingly,elemental two-dimensional(2D)materials and their derivatives have also attracted much attention due to their excellent chemical and physical properties. The integration of elemental 2D materials into solar cells has also been widely studied and the positive effects can be obviously observed . In this review,we show the development of nanoscale elemental 2D materials served as transport layers in solar cells,which have gained prominence improvement in terms of efficiency and been proved to be a new platform for further promising technology to meet the energy demands in modern society. Then the critical challenges and prospects for using of elemental 2D materials in solar cells are addressed.

Abstract:Solar energy is one of the most popular clean energy resources that can be fully utilized to date. The growing energy demand of modern society has spurred the technological advance of solar cells affording high power conversion efficiency and low-cost aspects. Nevertheless, the intrinsically intermittent nature and fluctuating output power of solar irradiation greatly restrain the practical uses of solar cells, especially in the scenarios of smart consumer electronics, electrical vehicles and hydrogen fuel production. With a collection of attractive features including favorable stability, durability and practicability, solar-driven integrated energy system that synergizes energy harvesting and storage offer a viable solution. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge in designing concepts, integrated configurations and overall performances of different types of solar-driven hybrid energy units. Particular attentions are paid to highlighting the practical application sectors enabled by those integrated energy systems. Future perspectives and key challenges in this emerging field are also covered at the end.

Abstract:The evolution of electronic systems towards small, flexible, portable and human-centered forms drives the demand for on-body power supplies with lightweight and high flexibility. Fiber solar cells that can be integrated into soft and lightweight textiles are considered as potential sustainable power sources for the next generation of wearable electronics. To this end, they have been extensively investigated in the past decade aiming to improve their photovoltaic performances, but there is still a big gap between the high-performance devices and real applications. Herein, the key advances of configurations, fabrications and performances of fiber solar cells are highlighted and analyzed. Based on the current progress, the latest ideas with regard to the remaining challenges and opportunities beyond the reach of the previous studies are presented.

Abstract:Developing lightweight, flexible and sustainable power sources is desirable and favorable for wearable electronics with the rapid advancement of portable devices. Here, a highly elastic and sustainable power source is fabricated for harvesting and storing energy simultaneously from ambient sunshine and human movement. Flexible fiber-shaped dye-sensitized solar cells are smartly integrated with triboelectric nanogenerators and serve as generating set. The supercapacitors as energy storage devices can store direct current energy for the solar cells and alternating current energy from the triboelectric nanogenerators after rectified at the same time. Furthermore, the supercapacitors are easily integrated with generating set due to the same electrode materials with triboelectric nanogenerators. Due to the all flexible devices, the size of the whole power system can be easily tuned and connected with electronic devices to create self-powered wearable electronics.

Abstract:Photovoltaic devices have attracted enormous attention in recent decades. Except for silicon, a traditional photovoltaic material, a lot of new technologies have emerged for a reduction in costs and application in flexible devices. To present a relatively comprehensive view of such devices, this paper summarized the newest researches and challenges faced by different materials respectively. To be more specific, the general working principles of photovoltaic devices are explained initially and then the development of several typical solar cells are introduced, including silicon, Copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), organic, and perovskite cells, followed by a brief introduction of their fabrication processes. This paper aims to help with advances in manufacturing methods or device structures to improve solar cell efficiency through the analysis of the progress in the corresponding fields.

Wireless portable light-weight self-charging power packs by perovskite-organic tandem solar cells integrated with solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors

Abstract:Self-charging power packs possess great potential applications in the micro-systems, but these electric circuits are required to be portable, light-weight and even wireless connected for practical applications, in particular, in the wearable and portable electronics. In this study, we report wireless portable light-weight solution-processed self-charging power packs by tandem solar cells integrated with solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors through solution-processed electrical conductive polymeric thin film. Towards the end, we first develop solution-processed tandem solar cells by perovskite solar cells (PSCs) combined with ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) for achieving large operational voltage. We then develop solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors by both novel positive electrode and solid-state polymeric electrolytes for enhancing the energy density and cycling stability. After that, we integrate PSCs–OSCs tandem solar cells with solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors through solution-processed electrical conductive polymeric thin film to build wireless portable light-weight solution-processed self-charging power packs. This novel self-charging power packs not only possess advanced features such as portable, light-weight and wireless connection, but also exhibit excellent electric-circuit device performance, such as with an overall efficiency of 12.43% and an energy storage efficiency of 72.4% under white light illumination. All these results demonstrate that the wireless portable light-weight self-charging power packs through utilization of tandem solar cells as the renewable energy source and solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors as the energy storage device connected with solution-processed electrical conductive polymeric thin film, for the first time, are developed.

Abstract:Faced with the increasingly serious energy and environmental crisis in the world nowadays, the development of renewable energy has attracted increasingly more attention of all countries. Solar energy as an abundant and cheap energy is one of the most promising renewable energy sources. While high-performance solar cells have been well developed in the last couple of decades, the high module cost largely hinders wide deployment of photovoltaic devices. In the last 10 years, this urgent demand for cost-effective solar cells greatly facilitates the research of solar cells. This paper reviews the recent development of cost-effective and high-efficient solar cell technologies. This report paper covers low-cost and high-efficiency perovskite solar cells. The development and the state-of-the-art results of perovskite solar cell technologies are also introduced.

Abstract:Carbon neutrality is one of the most urgent global missions and has promoted the development of clean and renewable energy sources. Sustainable photovoltaic cells have become ideal candidates for green energy harvesting owing to their high power conversion efficiencies and low production costs, which can efficiently reduce the carbon emissions. In recent years, with the increasing advancements in wearable electronics, flexible photovoltaic textile devices have been regarded as the most promising energy resources for Internet of Things. Accordingly, herein, an up‐to‐date account of the recent advancements in modern textile‐based solar cells (that is, organic, perovskite, and dye‐sensitized solar cells) based on both fibers and fabrics for highly effective harvesting of solar energy is provided, and their fundamental designs and optimization strategies are comprehensively reviewed. This review emphasizes the unique characteristics, underlying mechanisms and potential applications of textile‐based solar cells. Moreover, a modern perspective on both challenges and opportunities in the advancements of the interesting textile‐based solar cells embedded in wearable devices is elucidated. This review offers new insights into advanced energy technologies and smart wearable devices that would facilitate multidisciplinary integration of basic science, device engineering, industrial applications, and other scientific domains. Abstract:With the background of global energy demand escalating and environmental repercussions, the discovery of renewable energy alternatives is urgent. Over recent decades, plastic solar cells have showcased their remarkable characteristics compared to traditional materials, indicating great potential to the quest for efficient, sustainable energy. This paper is dedicated to consolidating the latest research findings, primarily focusing on cutting-edge materials and advancements within the field of plastic solar cells. It includes a comprehensive analysis of environmental impacts, production methodologies, and the emergence of novel materials such as P3HT, polyaniline, and perovskite. The ensuing discussions provide a detailed evaluation of critical materials, notably conductive polymers and small molecule organic semiconductors. These materials are characterized by their superior electrical conductivity, environmental and thermal resilience, and versatility of modification. Nevertheless, the complexity of assessing the environmental performance of photovoltaic systems and the necessity for enhancing efficiency and stability are shown by industrial and academic insights. Inkjet printing, spin-coating, and slot die coating are triple common production methods that align with different needs. However, the technique’s application is currently hampered by limitations in achieving high efficiency and stability, which restricts its upscaling adoption. Besides, the integration of OPV technology into wearable devices and building materials exemplifies the versatility of photovoltaics to meet diverse energy demands. In conclusion, further exploration of sustainable, eco-friendly materials and techniques is required to achieve better practical viability in the field of PSCs.

Abstract:It is possible to supply power to low‐consumption electronic devices by extracting energies from the environment and even the human body. The idea behind this work is to eliminate or minimize the dependence of portable electronic devices to the batteries. This is accomplished via simultaneously harvesting RF, light, thermal, and solar energies in a hybrid manner to power (bio)medical devices. Supercapacitors are used as the energy storage elements so that there is no energy waste, and each system is constantly storing the electrical energy with the aid of a diode block. Today, energy harvesting has developed into a technique from which various aspects are still hidden. By extracting energies from the environment and even the human body, and converting them into electrical energy, we can supply power to low‐consumption electronic devices. Energy harvesting works by inhibiting small amounts of ambient energies; otherwise, it is wasted in other forms such as heat, vibration, and light. In this paper, we aim to eliminate or minimize the dependence of portable electronic devices to the batteries, which have limited life times, service costs, handling, and environmental problems. This is accomplished via incorporating the hybrid energy‐harvesting techniques and designed to power (bio)medical devices in order to measure vital signs. In this circuit, by simultaneously harvesting RF, light, thermal, and solar (natural and artificial) energies, we were able to increase the reliability of continuous supply of electrical energy in energy‐harvesting systems by generating and storing maximum power from the environment. Supercapacitors are used as the energy storage elements so that there is no energy waste, and each system is constantly storing the electrical energy with the aid of a diode block. In addition, with the help of supercapacitors, this device is able to transmit a maximum of 420 mW to the load and the total efficiency is equal to 74%.

Abstract:In this article, we demonstrate a flexible and wearable hybrid radio frequency (RF) and solar energy harvesting system for powering wearable electronic devices. The system consists of a flexible transparent antenna, a flexible transparent rectifying circuit, and an amorphous silicon solar cell. By utilizing transparent stacked structure, the rectenna and the solar cell can provide more hybrid output power to accommodate more application scenarios. The flexible transparent antenna shows two impedance matching bandwidths of 3.5-3.578 and 4.79-5.09 GHz, covering n78/n79 fifth-generation (5G) communication frequency band and 5-GHz WiFi frequency band. At the frequency of 3.5 GHz, the flexible transparent rectifying circuit achieves a high RF-to-dc conversion efficiency of 54.67% at 13 dBm RF input power. In the room with a light intensity of 210 lux, compared with a single solar cell, the hybrid energy harvesting system can obtain an additional 35.6%-769.5% output power when the RF source power is varied from 4 to 10 dBm. These results demonstrate that the proposed flexible and wearable RF-solar energy harvester can provide reliable electric power supply, which can be a potential candidate for powering wearable electronic devices, distributed sensors and IOT devices.

Abstract:The solar power is one of the most promising renewable energy resources, but the high cost and complicated preparation technology of solar cells become the bottleneck of the wide application in many fields. The most important parameter for solar cells is the conversion efficiency, while at the same time more efficient preparation technologies and flexible structures should also be taken under significant consideration [1]. Especially with the rapid development of wearable devices, people are looking forward to the applications of solar cell technology in various areas of life. In this article the flexible solar cells, which have gained increasing attention in the field of flexibility in recent years, are introduced. The latest progress in flexible solar cells materials and manufacturing technologies is overviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of different manufacturing processes are systematically discussed.
Recent Progress in Semitransparent Organic Solar Cells: Photoabsorbent Materials and Design Strategies

Abstract:The increasing energy demands of the global community can be met with solar energy. Solution-processed organic solar cells have seen great progress in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) have made enormous progress in recent years and have been considered one of the most promising solar cell technologies for applications in building-integrated windows, agricultural greenhouses, and wearable energy resources. Therefore, through the synergistic efforts of transparent electrodes, engineering in near-infrared photoabsorbent materials, and device engineering, high-performance ST-OSCs have developed, and PCE and average visible transmittance reach over 10% and 40%, respectively. In this review, we present the recent progress in photoabsorbent material engineering and strategies for enhancing the performance of ST-OSCs to help researchers gain a better understanding of structure–property–performance relationships. To conclude, new design concepts in material engineering and outlook are proposed to facilitate the further development of high-performance ST-OSCs.
