Abstract:We demonstrate that interference-assisted coalescence of two noncollinearly overlapped filaments creates a wavelength-scale periodic plasma density modulation to guide the input pulses equivalently as a photonic crystal plasma waveguide. The periodic self-channeling is evidenced by the direct observation of the filament coalescence, which reveals wavelength-scale spatial widths and periodicity dependent on the crossing angles and intensity ratios between the incident filaments.

Abstract:We demonstrated experimentally the formation of the photorefractive filament array in PDMs by a femtosecond pulse laser. Using an optical microscopy and a fast CCD camera, we recorded the formation processes. The results showed that, by special design of the femtosecond laser parameters and the optical configurations, filaments can be placed in an orderly 1D or 2D arrangement array, and be reflected. Based on these observations, we have established a theoretical model to simulate the filaments.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated that two-dimensional (2D) plasma gratings could be generated in air by nonlinear interaction of three femtosecond filaments. The intensity interference of non-collinearly overlapped filaments was self-projected along a relatively long distance and accompanied with a wavelength-scale periodic change of the refractive index in the encircling air due to periodic plasma density modulation. The 2D plasma gratings supported 2D diffraction of the generated third-harmonic pulses. By using in-line time-resolved holographic imaging and time-delayed diffraction, the 2D plasma gratings were evidenced to last a few tens picoseconds after the excitation pulses.

Abstract:We studied the effects of different peak powers and initial pulse shapes during femtosecond laser pulse propagation in air. The full 3D simulation result showed that there was a bundle of discontinuous filaments along intense femtosecond laser pulse propagation axis. Comparisons between pulses with different input peak powers and initial pulse shapes could help us to find ways for forming long and uniform plasma channel in air.

Abstract:A long plasma channel is formed with a length up to a few hundred meters when intense femtosecond laser pulses propagate in air. We find that the propagation of the filaments in the channel shows a very complicated process including the evolution from a single filament into two and three and even more distinct filaments periodically, and the merging of multiple Filaments into two filaments that propagate stably and fade away eventually. From the point of view of applications, the lifetime of the plasma channel can be prolonged to the order of microseconds when another sub-ns laser Pulse is introduced. The filaments' distribution is optimized using a pinhole with different diameters. Our experiments also demonstrate simultaneous triggering and guiding of large gap discharges in air by laser filaments. A new concept of "laser plasma channel propulsion" is proposed. It is demonstrated that the plasma channel can continuously propel a light paper airplane without complicated focusing optics. As for the long distance propagation of the laser pulses, the filamentation process and the surpercontinuum (SC) emission are closely dependent on the initial negative chirp and the divergence angle of the laser beam. Most of laser energy deposited in the background serves as an energy reservoir for further propagation of the filamentation. We have shown that an energy reservoir over ten times the size of the filament core (mm size) is necessary to feed a single filament undisturbed propagation. At last, the characteristics of the multiple filaments formed by pre-focused and freely propagating fs laser pulses are investigated and compared.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the formation of a wavelength-scale photonic plasma grating induced by interference-assisted coalescence of two noncollinear ultraviolet femtosecond laser pulses. The period of the created plasma grating decreased with the crossing angle of the interacting laser pulses. For a proper small crossing angle, the noncollinear ultraviolet filaments were coalesced and an intense single ultraviolet filament was formed with a diameter of 5 μm which was below the focused limitation. This may provide a way to control ultraviolet femtosecond filamentation.

Abstract:Stable propagation of multifilament arrays in transparent bulk media with adjustable separation distances between adjacent child filaments has always been desired for advanced manufacturing. Here, we report on the generation of an ionization-induced volume plasma grating (VPG) by the interaction of two batches of noncollinearly propagating arrays of multiple filaments (AMF). The VPG can externally arrange the propagation of the pulses along regular plasma waveguides via spatial reconstruction of electrical fields, which is compared with the self-formation of randomly distributed multiple filamentation originated from noises. The separation distances of filaments in VPG are controllable by readily changing the crossing angle of the excitation beams. In addition, an innovative method to efficiently fabricate multidimensional grating structures in transparent bulk media through laser modification using VPG was demonstrated.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the formation of a thin plasma grating lasted for several tens of picosecond induced by the strong interaction between two noncollinear femtosecond filaments in air. A time-delayed second-harmonic pulse propagating along one of the incident filaments is coupled and nonlinearly diffracted by the thin plasma grating, leading to an energy transfer to the other noncollinearly crossed femtosecond filament. Abstract:Interactions of two counter-streaming plasmas driven by high power laser pulses are studied on Shenguang II laser facility. Filamentary structures were observed in the interaction region after the electrostatic shockwave decay. Theoretical analysis and observations indicate that the filaments are because of collisionless mechanisms, which are caused by the electromagnetic instability, such as the beam-Weibel instability. Collision experiments were also carried out for comparison and no filaments were generated.

Abstract:The spatial evolution of plasma filaments in air induced by femtosecond laser pulses is investigated experimentally. Several major filaments and small scaled additional filaments are detected in the plasma channel. The complicated interaction process of filaments as splitting, fusion and spreading is observed. The major filaments propagate stably, and the small scaled additional filaments can be attracted to the major filaments and merged with them. The major filaments are formed due to the perturbation of initial beam profile and the small scaled filaments are mainly caused by the transverse modulational instability.

Abstract:We present direct observation of filamentary plasma grating induced by interference between two noncollinear infrared femtosecond pulses in water by doping with gold nanoparticles. The gold nanoparticles act as scattering media in water and visualize the fine structure of local optical fields of plasma grating. By measuring the variation of local conductivity as laser undergoes filamentation in water, the generated electron density in water is qualitatively studied. Significant enhancement of local electron density is observed at the intersecting region as two laser beams form plasma grating, indicating the breakthrough of clamped intensity of a conventional filament in water.

Abstract:In this paper, a new experimental phenomenon is demonstrated. During the femtosecond laser filamentation, the generated terahertz (THz) pulse has been found to be strongly confined inside the plasma channel, reaching a spatial diameter of a few tens of micrometers. It has been attributed to the formation of a plasma negative dielectric waveguide induced by the transverse inhomogeneous plasma density distribution. The new experimental phenomenon will renew the understanding of the THz wave generation and propagation dynamics during the femtosecond laser and air plasma interaction. Due to this strong spatial confinement, THz electric field strength could be enhanced by orders of magnitude, potentially providing a new approach to performing THz nonlinear optics with low laser energy.

Abstract:The interaction and the coupling between the plasma filaments introduce some ultrafast phenomena, which not only reveal deep physical mechanisms, but also provide clues to develop the plasma filament-based applications. In this paper, the terahertz (THz) radiation from two plasma filaments with opposite directions, which are produced by focusing two counter propagating femtosecond laser pulses with a pair of off-axis-parabolic mirrors, is measured using electro-optic sampling detection method. The experimental results show that the pre-plasma weakens the THz radiation in the cases of with and without an external biased field. The lifetime of the plasma filament is estimated using the time evolution of the THz peaks. It is found that the THz radiation keeps weaker even when one pump pulse is 300 ps before the other one, which indicates that the lifetime of the plasma filament is longer than 300 ps. In addition, the THz pulses have similar shapes at different time delays between two pump laser pulses. Its underlying physical mechanisms are discussed as well.

Abstract:By the use of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we clarify the terahertz (THz) radiation mechanism from a plasma filament formed by an intense femtosecond laser pulse. The nonuniform plasma density of the filament leads to a net radiating current for THz radiation. This current is mainly located within the pulse and the first cycle of the wakefield. As the laser pulse propagates, a single-cycle and radially polarized THz pulse is constructively built up forward. The single-cycle shape is mainly due to radiation damping effect.

Abstract:The filamentation of two co-propagated femtosecond (fs) laser pulses in air is studied by numerical simulation. Depending on the different initial separation distances, relative phase shift and crossing angles, simulations show attraction, fusion, repulsion and collision of the two pulses. A long plasma channel can be formed by two in-phase pulses with small separation distance and cross angle. The coupling of two laser beam becomes weaker when the separation distance or cross angle between two beams is larger. In this case, the filamentation of each pulse develops independently. Our simulation results will be helpful for understanding the effect of the initial amplitude and phase modulation of laser pulse on the filamentation characteristics.

Abstract:We present an approach to explore and control nonlinear interactions between two orthogonally polarized femtosecond filaments launched parallel in air. The self-phase and cross-phase modulations due to the Kerr effect and cross-(de)focusing induced by the plasma and molecular alignment were distinctly identified resulting in attraction and repulsion of parallel filaments with different spatiotemporal proximities. Their interaction ranges were analyzed by comparing the interaction-induced displacements of parallel filaments at different initial separations. As proved by field-free displacements of parallel filaments around the impulsive rotational Raman excitation of the diatomic molecules in air, the molecular alignment exhibited a relatively longer interaction range than that of the plasma defocusing and the Kerr effect.

Abstract:We have shown experimentally and confirmed by means of full dimensional (3D+1) numerical simulations, the possibility to create an array of refractive index modification zones inside a fused silica sample using a 43fs, 2mJ, 800nm laser pulse and a periodic mesh introduced in front of the sample. Robust filaments and the corresponding refractive index modification zones preserve their transverse positions for more than 10 Rayleigh lengths (∼500μm). Numerical simulations prove that each mesh unit is an independent source of the background energy for a filament formed within this unit. The effect of the simultaneous formation of many extended periodically spaced filaments can be used to accelerate the fabrication of microoptics devices.

Abstract:A long air plasma channel can be formed by filamentation of intense femtosecond laser pulses. However, the lifetime of the plasma channel produced by a single femtosecond laser pulse is too short (only a few nanoseconds) for many potential applications based on the conductivity of the plasma channel. Therefore, prolonging the lifetime of the plasma channel is one of the key challenges in the research of femtosecond laser filamentation. In this study, a unique femtosecond laser source was developed to produce a high-quality femtosecond laser pulse sequence with an interval of 2.9 ns and a uniformly distributed single-pulse energy. The metre scale quasi-steady-state plasma channel with a 60–80 ns lifetime was formed by such pulse sequences in air. The simulation study for filamentation of dual femtosecond pulses indicated that the plasma channel left by the previous pulse was weakly affected the filamentation of the next pulse in sequence under our experimental conditions.

Abstract:Recent investigations carried out at the Laboratory of Optical Physics, Institute of Physics, CAS, on the propagation of intense femtosecond laser pulses in air is presented. A long-distance plasma channel is formed with a length of several hundreds meters. Four methods are developed to diagnose the plasma channel. Strong third harmonic emission is observed with a maximum conversion efficiency of 0.3%. The filaments distribution is optimized for applications using a pinhole with different diameters. The lifetime of the plasma channel is prolonged up to the order of microsecond. The filamentation process and the surpercontinuum emission are closely related with the initial chirp of the laser pulse. Triggering and guiding of large gap discharges in air by plasma channels opens promising perspectives for lightning control.
