Abstract:Pure zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO thin films were prepared via two step method. The crystal structure, topography, chemical composition and optical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer and laser micro-Raman spectrometer. XRD, FE-SEM and XPS results indicated that Ag nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the zinc oxide nanorods. Ag nanoparticles on the zinc oxide nanorods would extend the photoabsorption region and reduce the electron transition from CB to VB. The photoelectrochemical performances of ZnO thin film could be effectively enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification. Under sunlight illumination, the photocurrent of the Ag-0.5/ZnO electrode was about three times as large as that of the zinc oxide electrode. The charge transfer process for the Ag/ZnO electrode under sunlight illumination has been discussed. With the increase of Ag content, the resistivity of the sample decreases sharply.

Abstract:Arrays of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires and nanobelts were synthesized by the thermal evaporation of mixed powders of ZnO and graphite. Neither catalyst nor vacuum environment was involved in the fabrication. For comparison, the ZnO nanowires were grown on a pre-deposited transitional ZnO film on a brass substrate and the ZnO nanobelts were grown directly on a Si substrate. Their field emission properties were systematically measured. Current density of 10μA/cm2 was achieved at the fields of 5.7 and 6.2V/μm from the nanowires and nanobelts, respectively. Also, the emission sites were found to distribute uniformly on the whole cathode. In the preliminary test on the stability, the ZnO nanobelts, which were sharp at the tip but wide at the root, exhibited better robustness than the ZnO nanowires. The post-test scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation showed that the degradation of their field emission capability resulted from the breaking of the nanowires, which was tentatively attributed to the resistive heating during the field emission. In contrast, the shedding of the ZnO from the substrate was not so serious as imagined.
Combined Field and Thermionic Emission Process in ZnO Nanostructure Cold Emission Cathode

Abstract:With recent research, the author intends to outline the framework of the field emission of ZnO nanostructures. However, many groups’ reports ignored the thermionic emission process in the low electric field. A recently published field emission cathode parameter extraction method [X. He et al., J. Appl. Phys. 102, 056107(2007)] provided unambiguous and reliable cathode. The method utilized Richardson-Laue-Dushman law in low electric field and Fowler-Norheim equation in high electric field to solve a one-dimensional model including both thermionic and field emission. The model gave a much better agreement with the experimental data of ZnO cathode under the applied field and acquired a revised surface field enhancement factors and work function of ZnO cathode in the electron emission process.

Abstract:Stable field emission is realized from well-separated tetrapod-like ZnO nanostructures with high purity. The ZnO nanostructures are painted on a highly doped silicon substrate covered by a Au layer with a thickness of 300nm. An emission current density of 18mA∕cm2 is obtained and degradation was not observed over a three day period. The fluctuations of the emission current are less than 2%. These experimental results indicate that tetrapod-like ZnO nanostructures are promising materials as cold cathodes for mass production.

Abstract:A structure composed of zinc oxide nanowires (ZNWs) grown hydrothermally on an array of vertically aligned carbon nanofibers (CNFs) was fabricated and its field emission properties determined and compared with bare CNF arrays. The combination produced a macroscopic turn-on field of 1.2 V/μm which was found to be the lowest reported from ZNWs deposited on a two-dimensional substrate and much less than the equivalent CNFs array (5.2 V/μm). Crucially, field emission was found to be much more stable at higher pressures of 5×10−6 mbar without exhibiting current degradation for a fixed external field, while emitting with a current density of 1 mA/cm2, the current density typically required for backlighting and field emission displays. We propose a self-ballasting mechanism, in which the low carrier density in the zinc oxide prevents current runaway in the presence of adsorbed species.

Abstract:ZnO thin films were deposited using an electrodeposition method and porous morphologies could be achieved by annealing treatment. A variety of Ag nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of the ZnO thin films. Surface morphology, chemical composition, crystal phase and optical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectrophotometer and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Evidence of Ag nanoparticles on the Ag-4/ZnO thin film was be verified by the SEM and XPS measurements. The XRD results indicated that the Ag nanoparticles had little effect on crystallinity of the thin films. The photoresponse and photocatalytic results indicated that the photocurrent and photocatalytic performance could be enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification on the surface of the ZnO thin film. The best photoresponse and photocatalytic activity in Ag-4/ZnO thin film results from the moderate Ag nanoparticles on the surface of ZnO thin film, which could enhanced separation and suppressed recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:The effect of high-energy (200keV) electron irradiation on ZnO-tetrapod (ZnO-T) nanostructure has been investigated by employing in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) holder inside TEM. The microscopic results have revealed that the product consists of highly single-crystalline ZnO-T structures. The photoluminescence spectra show the increased amount of defects which lead to shift in the emission peak position in ultraviolet (UV) region and enhance the PL performance in visible luminescence (VL) region of ZnO-T nanocrystals. The in situ measurements show asymmetric Schottky contacts at the both ends interfaces under electron irradiation. The current–voltage (I–V) characteristics have revealed that the increase in electron density (range of ∼0–25pAcm−2) leads to an increase in the current along with the increase in carrier concentration from 1.1×1017cm−3 to 3.2×1017cm−3. In addition, it has been interestingly found that at high bias voltage, Schottky contacts turn to Ohmic contacts at the both ends with the influence of irradiation–matter interaction. The results strongly suggest that the ZnO-T is considered as a promising candidate for applications in irradiation environments.

Abstract:The effects of atomic oxygen exposure on electrical and field emission properties of ZnO nanowires were investigated. It was found that the turn-on field of ZnO nanowires increased after exposure to atomic oxygen. Measurement of electrical conductivity of single nanowire showed that the ozone exposure decreased the conductivity of the ZnO nanowire. Ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that the ozone exposure increased the work function. Photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results suggested that ozone exposure reduced the oxygen vacancy concentration, which leads to the change in the work function and conductivity. We propose that the change of field emission properties is mainly caused by the changes in the surface work function.

Abstract:In the present work, ZnO nanostructures with tunable size were successfully synthesized on non-seeded Cu substrates by a simple electrodeposition method. The effects of growth conditions on the morphology of the products were studied in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The as-prepared products exhibited flake-like morphology when the concentration of ZnCl2 was higher enough, while the products showed flower-like morphology when the concentration was lower enough. Field emission investigation indicated that the nanoflowers exhibited good emission properties. The ZnO nanoflowers show potential application as field emitters.

Abstract:The field emission properties of ZnO are often strongly affected by their morphology and structure. The field emission properties of the 3D urchin-like ZnO nanostructures, which consisted of ZnO nanorods with sharp tips and were self-assembled via a simple hydrothermal route, are investigated in detail. The urchin-like ZnO nanostructures show a good field emission performance with a turn-on field of approximately 3.7 V microm(-1) (at 10 microA cm(-2)) and a threshold field of approximately 4.8 V microm(-1) (at 1 mA cm(-2)) and good stability (<4%, during a 250 min test). The field enhancement factor beta is estimated to be 1239. The field emission performance from the present ZnO forms can be comparable to the best value of ZnO nanostructures reported in the literature. It is demonstrated that the ZnO nanorod sharp tip morphology results in a good and stable field emission performance, which may find applications in field emitters.

Abstract:Without the use of a metal catalyst in the process, ZnO with nanostructures was successfully prepared on Si (100) substrate by simple chemical vapor-deposition method. In our work, Ar was used as the plasma forming gas, O2 was the reactive gas and metal zinc powder (99.99% purity) vaporized by cylinder hollow-cathode discharge (HCD) acted as the zinc source. The crystal structures of the as-synthesized ZnO nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD); the ZnO sample growing on the wall of the crucible showed a ‘comb-like’ nanostructure, while the other one at the bottom of the crucible showed a ‘rod-like’ structure, which can be attributed to the difference of the oxygen content. The measurement on the photoluminescence (PL) performance of the ZnO nanostructures was carried out at room temperature. The results indicated that the ‘comb-shape’ ZnO nanomaterial possessed a remarkably strong ultraviolet emission peak centered at 388 nm, while ZnO nanorods, except better ultraviolet emission, also had relatively strong blue-green emission ranging from 470 to 600 nm due to the existence of oxygen vacancies. The growth mechanism of ZnO with nanostructures is also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Field emission properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) decorated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are investigated experimentally and theoretically. CNTs are in situ decorated with ZnO NPs during the growth process by chemical vapor deposition using a carbon source from the iron phthalocyanine pyrolysis. The experimental field emission test shows that the ZnO NP decoration significantly improves the emission current from 50 μA to 275 μA at 550 V and the reduced threshold voltage from 450 V to 350 V. The field emission mechanism of ZnO NPs on CNTs is theoretically studied by the density functional theory (DFT) combined with the Penn–Plummer method. The ZnO NPs reconstruct the ZnO–CNT structure and pull down the surface barrier of the entire emitter system to 0.49 eV so as to reduce the threshold electric field. The simulation results suggest that the presence of ZnO NPs would increase the LDOS near the Fermi level and increase the emission current. The calculation results are consistent with the experiment results.

Abstract:Graphene decorated with ZnO nanoparticles (G–ZnO hybrids) were prepared on n-Si substrates. The microstructures and chemical states of these hybrids were analyzed. Based on these experimental results, a field emission enhanced mechanism of the G–ZnO hybrids related to stable oxygen groups in the form of cyclic edge ethers is proposed. G–ZnO hybrids consist of a higher ratio of C–O–C chains than in graphene structures. This causes the potential barrier the electrons have to overcome in vacuum to be further diminished, resulting in a lower work function. Consequently, both the potential barrier height and width for the electrons emission are further reduced. So electrons can easily tunnel through the full barrier width, causing a larger field emission current in the G–ZnO hybrids. Such insight into the C–O–C chains from the G–ZnO hybrids offers the prospect for understanding the physical mechanism and future novel applications as field emitters.

Abstract:A variety of one-dimensional (1D) micro- and nanostructures of zinc oxide (ZnO) were self-assembled on amorphous carbons using thermal chemical vapor transport and condensation without any metal catalysts. The low turn-on electronic field and the higher current density were achieved on these 1D ZnO micro- and nanostructural emitters. It was found that the geometry of the micro- and nanostructural emitters plays a crucial role in the field emission of ZnO.

Abstract:The microstructure of field emission image from single nanowire could provide information about its field emission mechanism. The evolution of field emission pattern from ZnO nanowires under different pressure was studied. The ring shape emission patterns were recorded and their variation with applied voltage and pressure were studied. The observed phenomena were explained by a mechanism considering field induced hot electron emission and surface gas absorption.

Abstract:A phenomenon of field emission instability is reported. Field emission current oscillation was observed when a single zinc oxide (ZnO) one dimensional nanostructure operated at high current density. As a result, the radius curvature of the nanoemitter apex was sharpened to less than 15 nm. This indicates the oscillation was associated with melting of the emitter material. We found that the oscillation may be ascribed to (i) the behavior of charging and (ii) the shape changing of a metallic liquid ball that exists at the tip apex under high electric field. The net force of electric force and surface tension modifies the radius of the apex periodically, which results in the oscillation of field emission current. This finding may enhance the understanding of the physical process of field emission from ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:ZnO nanostructures were synthesised on nickel metallic wires using electrodeposited method in a mixed solution of zinc nitrate [Zn(NO3)(2)] and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for characterisation. The XRD patterns revealed the formation of a wurtzite phase of ZnO only. The SEM images showed that the formation of ZnO nanostructures could be adjusted by increasing the electrolyte concentration. Field emission measurements demonstrated that ZnO nanopillars with befitting density exhibited the lowest turn on field and the highest current density. The ZnO nanostructures with field emission performance may have potentials in the future of vacuum electronic devices.

Abstract:Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nano-pikes were produced by oxidative evaporation and condensation of Zn powders. The crystalline structure and optical properties of the ZnO nanostructures (ZnONs) greatly depend on the deposition position of the ZnONs. TEM and XRD indicated that the ZnONs close to the reactor center, ZnON-A, has better crystalline structure than the ZnONs away from the center, ZnON-B. ZnON-A showed the PL and Raman spectra characteristic of perfect ZnO crystals, whereas ZnON-B produced very strong green emission band at 500 nm in the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum and very strong Raman scattering peak at 560 cm(-1), both related to the oxygen deficiency due to insufficient oxidation of zinc vapor. ZnON-B exhibited better field emission properties with higher emission current density and lower turn-on field than ZnON-A.
