Abstract:Damping is not only the parameter characterizing the energy dissipation in vibration of systems, but also an important factor affecting the dynamic response of structures. Based on the zero amplitude damping theory, an improved method considering material damping energy dissipation is presented. In this paper, the stress-dependent complex damping model combining with zero amplitude damping theory is adopted to effectively calculate the dynamic response and loss factor of a simply supported steel beam subjected to variable velocity moving loads.. The analysis focuses on the effect of the velocity, acceleration, and/or deceleration on the dynamic behavior of the beam which is considered as a continuous Euler-Bernoulli beam. The Newmark-β numerical integration method and MATLAB programming language are employed to deal with this problem. A variety of numerical results show that the deflection of a simply-supported beam under moving load with a variable or uniform velocity changes with the moving velocity. As the moving load velocity (acceleration) increases (decreases), the deflection does not always increase (decrease). Namely, the deflection does not mostly depend on moving velocity or acceleration, while the mid-span node velocity response increases (decreases) with the increase(decrease) of moving load velocity and increases with the acceleration increasing under a uniformly accelerating case, and decreases with the deceleration increasing under a uniformly decelerating case. The paper also shows that the loss factors are not constant under dynamic loads: they increase with the deflection of the beam increasing. Therefore, the damping ratio of the beam changes with moving load location. The results allow us to draw important conclusions for bridge structure design purposes.
