Abstract:According to the different microstructural features, 304SS/72Ag-28Cu/TA15 (304 stainless steel) joint was separated into three reaction zones. The brazed joint under a beam current of 2.6 mA showed a typical microstructure of 304SS matrix/alpha-Fe(Cr,Ni)+tau/TiFe2+TiCu4/Cu-base solid solution (Cu(s,s))+Ag-base solid solution (Ag(s,s))+Ag-Cu eutectic/Ti3Cu4+TiCu+Ti-2(Ag,Cu)+alpha-Ti/TA15 matrix. Uniform and desired microstructure of 304SS/72Ag-28Cu/TA15 joint was obtained when the beam current was between 2.0mA and 2.6mA. Lower (<2.0 mA) or higher beam currents (3.5 mA) caused abnormal wettability and spreadability of 72Ag-28Cu filler metal, resulting in poor appearances of brazed joint. As the beam current increased, the peak temperature and residence time in the thermal cycle curve obviously increased, contributing to the mutual diffusion of alloy elements (Cu, Ti, Ag et al.). Due to larger diffusion coefficient of Cu than that of Ag, higher temperature also intensified the diffusion of Cu atoms to TA15 interface, causing the formation of more Cu(s,s) in braze zone at higher beam current. In addition, higher beam current facilitated the growth of Ti-Cu IMCs layer owing to the longer residence time and more dissolution content of TA15 alloy. 304SS/72Ag-28Cu/TA15 joint presented a decreased shear strength with an increase of beam current, associated with the increased thickness of Ti-Cu IMCs layer. The maximum shear strength of 304SS/72Ag-28Cu/TA15 joint brazed at 2.0 mA beam current was 188.6 MPa. Fracture analysis indicated that the joint fractured along Ti-Cu IMCs layer and showed a quasi-cleavage fracture mode.
