Abstract:Based on the 2D-PC wave multilayer film structure, a method to broaden the bandwidth of polarization beam splitter is proposed, which is composed of two different thickness periodic film stacks. Combined with the evaluation function of polarization splitting characteristic, the particle swarm optimization method is employed to design the optimal structural parameters. A broadband and compact polarization beam splitter is acquired, in which the center wavelength is 565 nm and its working range has achieved 220 nm with the average extinction ratio over 30 dB. In addition, by using the finite difference time domain method, the band structure and transmission spectrum of the wave-structure multilayer film are calculated, the angle sensitivity of the structure is investigated in detail. And we also study the electromagnetic field in the wavy-structure. Simulation results prove that the structure composed of the two different thickness periodic film stacks can avoid the discontinuity of bandgap, and PSO method can accelerate the convergence of the optimization algorithm and extend the bandwidth effectively.

Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.
Polarization Beam Splitter Using a Binary Blazed Grating Coupler.

Abstract:A novel polarization beam splitter using a two-layer grating coupler is proposed and demonstrated. It can directly couple the normally incident light from fiber into two separate waveguides according to their polarization states while splitting them. It realizes high coupling efficiency and a good extinction ratio by using binary blazed grating couplers. The coupling length is less than 14 microm. The extinction ratio is better than 20 dB for both polarizations over a 40 nm wavelength range, and the coupling efficiencies for the two layers are 58% and 50%.

Abstract:A novel polarization beam splitter based on an anti-symmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. Anti-symmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations are designed for strong coupling between the fundamental (TE0) and the first-order transverse electric modes (TE1), while not for transfer magnetic modes. An adiabatic coupler is cascaded at the input-port, so as to drop the TE1 reflection. The Bragg grating has a compact length of ∼20 μm (55 periods). The polarization isolations of the through- and drop-ports at the wavelength of 1557 nm are 34 and 31 dB, respectively. A broad bandwidth of 64 nm and a large fabrication tolerance of 80 nm for polarization isolation over 20 dB are also achieved.

Abstract:Compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted couplers is proposed by utilizing contra-directional coupling between two corrugated strip waveguides. The co-directional coupling in the device is greatly suppressed by the designed asymmetric structure. The phase matching condition is only satisfied for TE polarization at the central wavelength of 1550 nm by a spatially periodic refractive-index perturbation. Due to the contra-directional coupling, the device breaks the limit of the precise control of the coupling strength and length. The simulation results show that the presented PBS, with a coupling length of only 19 μm, has a broad working bandwidth (∼40 nm) for a crosstalk below -12 dB. A large fabrication tolerance (±40 nm) for the waveguide width is also achieved.

Abstract:A novel broadband beam splitter (BS) at a wavelength of 1.55 mu m is proposed and demonstrated, which is based on the form birefringence of subwavelength binary blazed grating and effective-medium theory. Rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) is used to optimize the design of this beam splitter. In order to achieve high coupling efficiency and equal power separation, the grating depth, period and wavelength are optimized, and the double-structure design which consists of symmetrical subwavelength gratings is adopted. Finally, the additional reflectors are also discussed and analyzed. Simulation results for TE polarized wave and TM polarized wave are presented. Using three reflectors, the BS for TE light are designed to split incident light beam into two beams of nearly equal power (41% and 43%), and the power difference of two output ports is less than 3% over a 20 nm wavelength bandwidth range. Simultaneously, the coupling efficiency of TM model for the right and the left branches of waveguide are 33% and 40%, respectively. The power differences of two ports of waveguide are lower than 10% with 80 nm wavelength bandwidth. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the beam splitter designed here has advantages of high coupling efficiency, compact structure and polarization independence. Abstract:A polarization beam splitter assisted by a subwavelength grating (SWG) is proposed. The SWG enables nearly 20-fold beat length reduction for TE, which makes the high extinction ratio (ER) possible. On the other hand, the embedded SWG preferably affects the refractive index of the even mode in the coupling region and broadens the bandwidth of the splitter. As a result, the ER of 28.7 dB (24.8 dB) for TE (TM) is obtained, while the insertion loss is only 0.10 dB (0.11 dB) at the wavelength of 1550 nm. The ER is more than 10 dB in the wavelength range of 1450-1625 nm for TE and 1495 1610 nm for TM. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A switchable polarization beam splitter utilizing GST-on-silicon waveguides is introduced and comprehensively investigated in this paper. Based on the phase matching and mode hybridization, structural parameters of the presented device are optimized by using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method, so that the output fundamental transverse-electric (TE0) and transverse-magnetic (TM0) modes can be switched by controlling the phase state of GST and the device exhibits broad bandwidth, low crosstalk, and high polarization extinction ratio. For the designed device with the amorphous GST, the crosstalk is lower than -23.40 dB and the polarization extinction ratio is larger than 21.35 dB over the C-band. In the case of the crystalline GST, within the C-band, the crosstalk of less than -27.37 dB and the polarization extinction ratio of greater than 21.37 dB are achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-efficiency beam splitter based on an I-shaped stack configuration under normal incidence is proposed, which can function as a multi-functional polarization-independent and a bi-functional polarization-selective beam splitter at the wavelength of 1550 nm. The rigorous coupled-wave analysis and a simulated annealing algorithm are used in the process of calculating and optimizing. When the grating functions as a polarization-independent beam splitter, the diffraction efficiency of each main diffraction order can be greater than 48%, 32%, 24%, and 19% of dual- to five-port output for transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations respectively. When the grating is employed as a polarization-selective beam splitter, the total efficiencies exceed 95% for TE and TM polarizations as well. Furthermore, this research applies a simplified modal method to reveal the energy distribution inside the grating. Compared to previously reported beam splitters, the proposed grating structure has higher efficiency and uniformity, making it well-suited to the various output mode requirements of large-scale optical communication systems.

Abstract:The beam splitter is one of the basic optical components. Traditional beam splitters use bulky cubes or plates to realize beam splitting and thereby can hardly be used in a compact optical system. Recently, the beam splitter based on phase gradient metasurfaces has been proposed to split beam with a compact size. However, it is facing challenges on the efficiency and manufacturability. Herein, a beam splitter based on single-sized flat dielectric metagrating for arbitrary polarizations is proposed. The diffraction efficiency of the fabricated beam splitter reaches as high as 80% for both TM and TE polarizations at peak wavelength. Moreover, it has a broad working wavelength range (455-550 nm) at visible wavelength where the diffraction efficiency is much higher than 60%. Apart from the broadband and high diffraction efficiency, the steering angle can be simply adjusted by varying the periodicity. Splitting light with a flat metagrating enriches the field of flat photonics, opening up new possibilities in applications such as augment reality displays, imaging systems, compact spectrometers, and lidars.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers (GACCs). Over 30-dB extinction ratios and less than 1-dB insertion losses are achieved for both polarizations. The proposed PBS exhibits tolerance in width variation, and the polarization extinction ratios remain higher than 20 dB for both polarizations when the width variation is adjusted from + 10 to -10 nm. Benefiting from the enhanced coupling by the GACCs, the polarization extinction ratio can be kept higher than 15 dB and the insertion loss is lower than 2 dB for both polarizations when the coupling length varies from 30.96 to 13.76 μm.

Abstract:We propose a novel broadband polarizing beam splitter with a compact sandwich structure that has a subwavelength grating in the quasi-static domain as the filling. The design is based on effective-medium theory an anisotropic thin-film theory, and the performance is investigated with rigorous coupled-wave theory. The design results show that the structure can provide a high polarization extinction ratio in a broad spectral range.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a broadband compact polarizing beam splitter (PBS) constructed by only a single layer subwavelength asymmetric profile grating. The properties of the grating PBS are investigated by rigorous coupled-wave analysis. It is shown that, over a broadband spectrum of 1.53-1.62 mu m, the grating PBS demonstrates high diffraction efficiencies (> 97%) with extinction ratio (ER) greater than 16 dB and a comparatively wide angular bandwidth (about 8 degrees). Effects of deviation from the design parameters on the performance of the grating PBS are also presented.

Abstract:Conventional multi-port beam splitters with spot arrays, while being key components in diversiform optical systems, show polarization sensitivity and insufficient uniformity. Here, we proposed a polarization-independent high-efficiency 3 × 3 beam splitter based on the two-dimensional(2D) cylindrical dielectric grating (CDG), which could redistribute the incident light into nine beams with equal power. The proposed grating consists of a double-layer dielectric cylinder on the substrate of fused silica. The parameters of grating structure and fabrication tolerance are calculated by using rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) and simulated annealing algorithm. The numerical results show that nine diffraction orders ((0, 0), (±1, 0), (0, ±1), (±1, ±1)) have average diffraction efficiencies of 10.12 % with uniformity of 2.8 % and mean polarization-independent loss (PDL) of 0.076 dB for TE and TM polarization. This work can open a new and positive way for researching the 2D multi-spot beam splitter and has promising applications in the field of three-dimensional(3D) imaging and reconstruction, microscopy techniques, material processing, etc.

Abstract:A polarization beam splitter based on metasurface-assisted silicon nitride Y-junction for mid-infrared wavelengths is proposed and numerically investigated. By properly selecting the structural parameters using the finite difference time domain method and particle swarm optimization algorithm, the input fundamental transverse-magnetic (TM0) and transverse-electric (TE0) modes can be converted and separated from each other with high efficiency. Simulation results exhibit that the conversion efficiencies for TM0-to-TE1 polarization and TE0-to-TM0 polarization are respectively 97.4% and 97.6%. At the mid-infrared wavelength of 2. 5μm, the polarization extinction ratios of the designed PBS with the input TM0 and TE0 modes are 27.45 and 27.61 dB. The corresponding insertion losses are 0.21 and 0.31 dB. Within a bandwidth from 2. 45μm to 2.55μm, the polarization extinction ratio is greater than 19.48 dB and the insertion loss is less than 1.41 dB.

Abstract:This paper proposes a bidirectional trifunctional splitter with a bilayer ridge structure for polarization-selective and polarization-insensitive outputs at the wavelength of 1550 nm. The configuration can realize a four-port output for both polarizations and TE-two/TM-three output. In the upper part of the bidirectional trifunctional splitter, for TE polarization, two outputs exhibit diffraction efficiencies greater than 49%, while for TM polarization, three outputs exhibit diffraction efficiencies greater than 32%. Furthermore, for the lower part of this beam splitter, under both TE and TM polarization, the diffraction efficiencies of four outputs exceed 24%. Compared to the previous beam splitter, the bidirectional trifunctional splitter exhibits superior uniformity and is capable of simultaneously achieving polarization-selective and polarization-insensitive outputs. Furthermore, the configuration is theoretically resistant to the geometric dimensions, which greatly reduces the difficulty of fabrication. This work exhibits a novel approach to the design of energy-splitting devices and optical communication systems with multiple outputs.

Abstract:We propose and simulate a new kind of compact polarizing beam splitter (PBS) based on a photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR) with complete photonic bandgaps. The two polarized states are separated far enough by resonant and nonresonant coupling between the waveguide modes and the microring modes. Some defect holes are utilized to control the beam propagation. The simulated results obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method show that high transmission (over 95%) is obtained and the polarization separation is realized with a length as short as 3.1 microm. The design of the proposed PBS can be flexible, thanks to the advantages of PCRRs.
