Abstract:The volume fraction of oxygen in areas prone to spontaneous combustion, such as the spontaneous combustion zone of the goaf, the high caving area of the roadway, or the sealed fire zone, is lower than the oxygen concentration in the mine, itself. Model experiments simulating spontaneous combustion were carried out at 21, 16, 13, 9, and 5.8 percent volume fractions of oxygen. The formation of the oxidation products CO, C2H4, and CO2 was studied. The formation of oxidation products shows a hysteresis effect at reduced oxygen concentrations: The temperature for initial production is suppressed and the amount of products produced decreased. When the normal volume fraction of oxygen is used to predict spontaneous combustion a delayed, or fallacious, prediction is caused by the hysteresis effect. The use of actual volume fractions of oxygen would better fit the practical situation when testing for potential coal spontaneous combustion.
