Abstract:One of the most challenging problems in alumina industry is the disposal of red mud (bauxite residue), ie the main waste of bauxite ore processing by Bayer process to extract alumina. Many researches were carried out on treatment and utilisation of Bayer red mud. This paper investigated the size distributions of red mud and the elements and minerals distributions in different size grains of red mud. The red mud was proposed to be divided into two parts by the size of 0.075 mm. Iron ore could be concentrated from the bulk red mud above 0.075 mm with magnetic separation or/and gravity separation. The content of fine particles (<0.075 mm) in raw red mud was 74.31 per cent in weight. The massive ratio of Al2O3 to SiO2 (A/S) in fine particle was improved to 1.41 from 0.87 of raw red mud. Alumina was proposed to be recovered from fine red mud by the soda-lime roasting process. After the mixtures of red mud, lime and soda were roasted at 800°C or 1000 ~ 1100°C, the standard leaching efficiencies of alumina were over 80 per cent. © (2010) by the Australasian Institute for Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM).
