Abstract:Surface accuracy directly affects the surface quality and performance of mechanical parts. Circular hole, especially spatial non-planar hole set is the typical feature and working surface of mechanical parts. Compared with traditional machining methods, additive manufacturing (AM) technology can decrease the surface accuracy errors of circular holes during fabrication. However, an accuracy error may still exist on the surface of circular holes fabricated by AM due to the influence of staircase effect. This study proposes a surface accuracy optimization approach for mechanical parts with multiple circular holes for AM based on triangular fuzzy number (TFN). First, the feature lines on the manifold mesh are extracted using the dihedral angle method and normal tensor voting to detect the circular holes. Second, the optimal AM part build orientation is determined using the genetic algorithm to optimize the surface accuracy of the circular holes by minimizing the weighted volumetric error of the part. Third, the corresponding weights of the circular holes are calculated with the TFN analytic hierarchy process in accordance with the surface accuracy requirements. Lastly, an improved adaptive slicing algorithm is utilized to reduce the entire build time while maintaining the forming surface accuracy of the circular holes using digital twins via virtual printing. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is experimentally validated using two mechanical models.

Abstract:In this article, comparative studies on computational accuracies and convergence rates of triangular and quadrilateral meshes are carried out in the frame work of the finite-volume method. By theoretical analysis, we conclude that the number of triangular cells needs to be 4/3 times that of quadrilateral cells to obtain similar accuracy. The conclusion is verified by a number of numerical examples. In addition, the convergence rates of the triangular meshes are found to be slower than those of the quadrilateral meshes when the same accuracy is obtained with these two mesh types.

Abstract:A-posteriori error estimation theory and a practical and effective h-type adaptive procedure for numerical manifold element method are presented.The relative error factors of manifold element and discrete system are defined in energy norm.To estimate the relative error factors,the exact stresses are approximately determined through stresses on Gaussian points basing on the numerical manifold method and finite cover technology.All manifold elements with relative error factor determined to exceed a pre-assigned limit are automatically refined until the relative error factor of discrete system satisfies a prescribed demand.The corresponding program is coded and two examples,one is an L-shaped structure and the other is a soil slope,are analyzed.The results indicate that the procedure can give nearly optical mesh and is practical and effective for both regular problems and problems with strong singularities.

Abstract:A direct boundary element method (BEM) has been studied in the paper based on a set of sufficient and necessary boundary integral equations (BIE) for the plane harmonic functions. The new sufficient and necessary BEM leads to accurate results while the conventional insufficient BEM will lead to inaccurate results when the conventional BIE has multiple solutions. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that it is beneficial to use the sufficient and necessary BEM, to avoid hidden dangers due to non-unique solution of the conventional BIE.

Abstract:A new algorithm is proposed to recast Boolean operations of triangulated solids as a boundary conforming tetrahedral meshing problem. Different from those existing algorithms that merely maintain a conforming surface mesh, the new algorithm maintains a boundary conforming volume mesh at the same time of computing surface intersections. This volume mesh not only provides a background structure in helping the improvement of the efficiency of intersection computations, but also enables the development of a set of efficient and reliable flood-filling type procedures to extract the Boolean outputs. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed algorithm are investigated in further details, and various techniques are suggested to tackle these two issues accordingly. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated by performing suitable test cases and the results are compared well with those data obtained by other state-of-the-art codes.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:The conventional numerical manifold method is improved in generating manifold elements. In this framework, the concept of mathematical element is underlying, and manifold elements are generated by intersecting mathematical elements with physical features. On one hand, each mathematical cover is recovered by the mathematical elements with the same node (and hence the node is the star of mathematical cover). On the other hand, each physical cover is eventually recovered by piecewise pasting the manifold elements within the same mathematical cover with the same physical feature. After this improvement, generation of manifold elements can bypass the overlapping procedure of irregular and complicated physical covers, leading to the effect as simple as the finite element method. Compared with the conventional numerical manifold method, this improvement can attain “what you see is what you get” in generating manifold elements, and construction of weight functions is theoretically straightforward. In addition, local mesh refinement becomes more convenient when necessary. Two examples are conducted to validate the improved numerical manifold method.

Abstract:The Hausdorff distance is one of the most fundamental metrics for comparing 3D shapes. To compute the Hausdorff distance efficiently from a triangular mesh A to another triangular mesh B, one needs to cull the unnecessary triangles on A quickly. These triangles have no chance to improve the Hausdorff distance estimation, that is the parts with local upper bound smaller than the global lower bound. The local upper bound estimation should be tight, use fast distance computation, and involve a small number of triangles in B during the reduction phase for efficiency. In this paper, we propose to use point-triangle distance, and only involve at most four triangles in B in the reduction phase. Comparing with the state-of-the-art proposed by Tang et al. in 2009, which uses more costly triangle-triangle distance and may involve a large number of triangles in reduction phase, our local upper bound estimation is faster, and with only a small impact on the tightness of the bound on error estimation. Such a more economic strategy boosts the overall performance significantly. Experiments on the Thingi10K dataset show that our method can achieve several (even over 20) times speedup on average. On a few models with different placements and resolutions, we show that close placement and large difference in resolution bring big challenges to Hausdorff distance computation, and explain why our method can achieve more significant speedup on challenging cases.

Abstract:In recent years, with the development of 3D data acquisition equipments, the study on reverse engineering has become more and more important. However, the existing methods for parameterization can hardly ensure that the parametric domain is rectangular, and the parametric curve grid is regular. In order to overcome these limitations, we present a novel method for parameterization of triangular meshes in this paper. The basic idea is twofold: first, because the isotherms in the steady temperature do not intersect with each other, and are distributed uniformly, no singularity (fold-over) exists in the parameterization; second, a 3D harmonic equation is solved by the finite element method to obtain the steady temperature field on a 2D triangular mesh surface with four boundaries. Therefore, our proposed method avoids the embarrassment that it is impossible to solve the 2D quasi-harmonic equation on the 2D triangular mesh without the parametric values at mesh vertices. Furthermore, the isotherms on the temperature field are taken as a set of iso-parametric curves on the triangular mesh surface. The other set of iso-parametric curves can be obtained by connecting the points with the same chord-length on the isotherms sequentially. The obtained parametric curve grid is regular, and distributed uniformly, and can map the triangular mesh surface to the unit square domain with boundaries of mesh surface to boundaries of parametric domain, which ensures that the triangular mesh surface or point cloud can be fitted with the NURBS surface.

Abstract:The truncation errors of the cell-centered and the cell-vertex schemes for unstructured triangular grids are theoretically derived respectively, showing that the truncation error of the cell-vertex scheme is smaller than that of the cell-centered scheme for the same triangular grids. The theoretical derivation is validated by some numerical examples. In addition, it is also shown by both of theoretical analysis and numerical examples that the convergence rate of the cell-vertex scheme is faster than that of the cell-centered scheme.

Abstract:A weak form curvilinear triangular quadrature element is constructed and applied to the analysis of plane stress plates and torsional shafts. It is observed that convergence is achievable and the element is robust against domain irregularity, exhibiting both high accuracy and flexibility to complex geometry representation. Element- wise numerical differentiation and integration are carried out on the same set of points which is mapped from an octant of a sphere.

Abstract:Machining accuracy verification is an important method in virtual manufacturing to determine if desired machining accuracy can be achieved before actual machining. A machining accuracy verification method is proposed in this paper. The design part model in STereo Lithography(STL) format is imported and converted into discrete model with new triangle patches according to the discrete result of the machined part. The machining error is treated as the distance and normal projection of the distance between central points of the corresponding triangle patches on the machined part and the design part. The simulation result shows the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:A new quadratic Hermite-type triangular finite element is conceived to solve a class of two-dimensional second-order elliptic boundary value problems. Its error estimates on anisotropic meshes are developed. Abstract:Severe accuracy loss will happen on the occasion of element distortion, and the program may even fail to finish the calculation when there are elements which are concave. In this study, a novel concave-admissible 8 node quadrilateral plane element is developed within the framework of assumed displacement quasi-conforming method. The B-net method is used for calculation of area integral items and gives results with high precision within convex and even concave quadrangles. Numerical analysis on the element shows its trial functions represent exactly all polynomial terms of order less or equal to 2 in the Cartesian coordinates, which is also proved in numerical experiment described in Fig.1. Numerical results and comparisons with existing elements show that present element exhibits a remarkable robustness and insensitivity with extreme mesh distortions, as well as good accuracy. For the Cook beam problem, satisfactory results can be obtained when the mesh become severely distorted, as shown in Fig. 2. Fast and Robust Method for Boolean Operations on Triangulated Solids Based on Signed Octree

Abstract:In this paper, a fast and robust method for Boolean operations on triangulated solids is presented. It is applied to regularized Boolean operations including union, difference, and intersection. This approach is less time costing because a signed Octree and several optimizations are introduced in the algorithm. The operation starts with the minimum bounding box of the models to form the root node of the Octree, which is then continuously divided into sub-nodes, until triangles in each sub-node only have a number of triangles from both meshes, or the sub-node reaches a certain depth. After the Octree division, we run a traverse of the Octree to calculate intersection points between two meshes. This only occurs with triangles from each mesh in the very bottom sub-node of the Octree. With an in/out sign addicted to triangle’s data structure, the final facet selection process is greatly simplified. The computational complexity is highly reduced through this method with the accuracy remains to the same level. This hierarchical Octree based method enables us to do Boolean calculation on very complex models. In the end, we give some sample results and some comparisons with other algorithms and commercial software.

Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Abstract:Quadrilateral mesh is a commonly used mathematical cover for numerical manifold method (NMM). However, the NMM based on quadrilateral isoparametric mapping has some intrinsic shortcomings, which is revealed for the first time in this study. Therefore, a new NMM is established to overcome these drawbacks by adopting a quadrilateral area coordinate system. In the proposed NMM, the stiffness matrix can be analytically determined without resorting to cumbersome Jacobian inversion and numerical integration. Moreover, a cone-complementary-based contact model is formulated in the context of the new NMM framework, which enables accurate determination of frictional and cohesive contact forces in solving dynamic contact problems. Thus, artificial penalty and open-close iteration in the original NMM can be all avoided. Several benchmark examples are simulated to demonstrate the excellent performance of the presented NMM.

Abstract:Mesh surface parameterization is an important problem in Digital Geometry Processing,and triangular mesh is the typical form for mesh representation.To solve the problem of planar parameterization for triangular mesh fast,and minimize the distortion of triangles generated in the parameterization simultaneously,a simple as-similar-as-possible planar parameterization method for triangular mesh is presented in this paper.The angles and length ratios between two adjacent edges are globally preserved in a least squares sense after the parameterization,by which the similarity of the corresponding triangles can be satisfied.A linear system is constructed according to the corresponding angle and length ratio of two adjacent edges on the triangular mesh,and the planar parameterization result can be fast obtained by solving the sparse linear system with some initial conditions.Linear constraints can be combined into the linear system in our approach,and the algorithm is of linear complexity.This method has a direct geometric interpretation and can be implemented more easily than other methods.Experimental examples show that good planar parameterization results can be derived from this method,which is a very efficient tool for the applications in Computer Graphics,such as texture mapping.

Abstract:A localized triangular differential quadrature method is introduced in this article. Not only is the existing limitation on the approximation order in the triangular differential quadrature eliminated but also the convergent rate is enhanced in the new method. As an example to validate the new method, elastic torsion of prismatic shaft with regular polygonal cross section is studied and excellent agreement with available theoretical and analytic solutions is reached.
