Abstract:Dynamic OD estimation plays an important role in achieving the potential promised by the self-adaptive traffic control system for urban traffic management. Therefore, considerable research efforts have been directed towards the development of OD estimation models. However, the majority of current studies estimate OD flows based on merely one traffic data source, and the performance of the models is limited because of the coverage and accuracy of the traffic sensors. Therefore, dynamic Origin-Destination (OD) estimation has been an important, yet still difficult challenge for traffic engineers for operational applications. This paper proposes a dynamic OD real-time estimation method using multi-source sensors data. Based on the framework of the proposed method, the dynamic characteristic changes over time of OD flow is firstly analyzed and the problem of dynamic OD estimation is converted to be a problem of estimating the OD structural deviation. Then the dynamic relationship between traffic volume and OD structure deviation is represented to establish the Kalman filter model for dynamic OD estimation, in which an improved traffic assignment approach is provided and embedded into the measurement equation of the Kalman filter model for dynamically updating the traffic assignment matrix. Finally, a dual self-adaptive mechanism based on the adaptive Kalman filter is designed to calibrate the model and the regular OD. The proposed method is implemented on a real-life traffic network in downtown area of Kunshan city, China. Implementation results show that the proposed method can produce satisfying results in terms of accuracy. Comparative results also show that the proposed method outperforms the link-volume-based and turning-movement-based methods.
