Abstract:This paper presents results of an exploratory study on differences in driving characteristics between normal and emergency situations and builds up the car-following model under the emergency evacuation situation. The simulation scenario has been given to create a driving environment under the emergency evacuation situations. Questionnaire investigations and the electrocardiogram/heart rate monitor are used to verify the validity of the driving environment from both subjective and objective perspectives. Perception reaction time (PRT) and the critical headway are taken as two indicators to describe driving characteristics. The results show that PRT is in accord with normal distribution under both normal and emergency situations. The value of PRT under the emergency situation is lower than that under the normal situation. The results also show that critical headway under the emergency situation is smaller than that under the normal situation. A back propagation (BP) neural network is designed in this study. A combination of the Levenberg-Marquardt BP algorithm and Bayesian regularization is employed to train the network. Gray-correlation analysis is conducted to determine which factors have a great impact on the acceleration of the following car. Simulation of the BP neural network using data collected from driving simulator reveals that the BP neural network has a high precision in the prediction of the car-following model. Research On Driver Braking Behavior Under Emergency Situations And Relation Between Driver Personalities And Driving Violations

Abstract:Problem: Reduction of traffic violations and improvement of traffic safety level have become increasingly important issues during recent years with the advance of the automobile society. in China, there is a lack of scientific evidence on the relationships between sensation seeking, aggressive behavior and young drivers' involvement in violations. And whether driver can give precise and accurate braking operations under emergency situations is closely associated with the traffic safety. This research was divided into two sections and each of them was examined. Methods: Firstly, the samples randomly selected of 314 young drivers (18-28 years old) were interviewed through questionnaires of revised Arnett Inventory of Sensation Seeking (AISS), Aggressive Behavior Questionnaire and Driving Violation Questionnaire, which mainly focused on their behavior on the road and the number of violations in which they had been involved. The statistical methods were principal components analysis (PCA). The structural equation modeling was established and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient was applied to evaluate the internal consistency of these variables and various fit indices were used to assess the fit of the model. Secondly, this research obtained data on drivers' physiological responses and braking behavior to three kinds of dangerous scenes in which 40 drivers were selected randomly. Based on the driver behavior & reaction research platform and clustering analysis method, the drivers were classified and the traits of drivers' physiological reactions and braking behavior in the same group under emergency situations were analyzed. The relationships between physiological reactions and the braking parameters, which include braking force and braking time, were also discussed. Results: The structural equation model suggested that driving just for sensation seeking and aggressive were predictors Of young drivers' involvement in traffic violations and accidents and various fit indices indicated that this model fitted the data well. It was found that younger age was associated with young drivers' involvement in violations. The second section results showed that most of drivers could take proper evasive action, but the average braking time was longer than those for simpler scenario tests. Different emergency situations and drivers would have different physiological indices changing values, but all of them could be classed into three groups and the drivers in the same group have close characteristics. Application: The findings of this study can contribute in the formation of public policies aiming to prevent young drivers' driving violations and could also be used to establish a fuzzy control system to optimize the driver behavior. These findings can also be the starting point of some health promotion interventions trying to reduce traffic accidents and casualties on the road.

Abstract:Information technologies have been developed to facilitate driving performance and improve safety. However, there is a lack of computational methods that can take into account drivers' adaptation to driving. That is, how behaviour changes with experience. Modelling the effect of driving experience on driver behaviour is important to the development of in-vehicle information technologies, because drivers at different skill levels may need different types or levels of assistance. Cognitive-architecture-based human performance modelling is a valuable method that can integrate different cognitive aspects underlying human behaviour such as skill levels and support quantitative simulation of behaviour. The study reported in this paper tested and examined computational models built in ACT-R (Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational) to account for the effect of driving experience on collision avoidance braking behaviour. The modelling results were compared with human data collected from a simulated driving experiment. The models produced braking behavioural results similar to the human results. Moreover, model predictions of three other emergent-braking scenarios were generally similar to and in the same order with the empirical results reported in previous studies. Future research can further integrate the method and results into intelligent driver assistance systems such as collision warning systems to better adjust the systems to the need of different drivers with different skill levels.

Abstract:Drivers are used to steering, braking or steering-braking when they meet obstacles in order to protect lives and properties. Frecord data collecting system, dynamic GPS and sensors of braking force and angles are utilized to study the changing rules of drivers' braking velocitiy according to different time, the relation between maximum braking velocity and the distance between vehicle and obstacle, as well as driving velocity. The results show that drivers' braking operation includes four periods and also indicate that the drivers' maximum braking velocity is changing with distance in negative-power, however drivers' maximum braking velocity is changing with driving velocity in positive-linear. The regressive formulas are given. This research can help us to understand drivers behavior under emergency and also offer theory basis for drivers' safety management.

Abstract:Impaired driving behavior was one of the reasons leading to traffic accident,and was always the research hotspot of road safety.The purpose of this study was to introduce its progress and prospect.The definition of driving behavior was firstly discussed,and the driving behavior has been separated into three steps based on the cognitive procedure,which include information awareness,decision and operation,and vehicle motion.Then,the driving risk evaluation model was established.The research content,methodology and achievements of driving behavior were also discussed in this study.Finally,the development prospect and prospect were summarized and the trend and innovated methods or means were proposed to enhance the road safety management level,and reduce the road risk.

Study on driver's active emergency response in dangerous traffic scenes based on driving simulator

Abstract:Objective: A driver's active emergency response in dangerous traffic scenes consists of two parts, including reaction behavior and physiological state. In dangerous traffic scenes, the driver's active emergency response has an important impact on human collision injury. Clarifying the driver's active emergency response is an important prerequisite for the study of human collision injury under nonstandard posture. Therefore, this study investigates the driver's active emergency response in different inevitable collision scenes using driving simulator. Methods: A driving simulator with a high-speed camera system and human physiological signal acquisition system was first built. Then, three typical vehicle dangerous collision scenes were developed, including frontal collision, side collision, and rear-end collision. Finally, twenty participants (15 males and 5 females) were recruited for a driving experiment, and their active emergency responses were recorded and analyzed. Results: All subjects would rotate the steering wheel to the left or right in the active emergency state, and the rotation of the hand would also cause the subject's upper body to tilt in the same direction. The maximum angle for male subjects to rotate the steering wheel was 59.98°, while for the female subjects, it was 44.28°. In addition, the maximum grip force between the male subjects and the steering wheel was 280.5 N, compared to 192.5 N for female subjects. Compared to the female participants, the male participants not only have a greater rotation angle and a greater grip force on the steering wheel, but also have greater pressure on the brake pedal, and the foot moves quickly from the accelerator pedal to the brake pedal and presses the brake pedal. Conclusions: Drivers have different active emergency responses to different vehicle collision scenes. Quantitative statistics of driver's active emergency response will have important guiding significance for the analysis of the impact of human active emergency response on human injury characteristics in subsequent vehicle collision experiments.

Abstract:Electrocardiograph,Frecord data collecting system and dynamics GPS are utilized to study the effect of drivers' characteristics on the subjective judgment about the emergency degree and control of the vehicle motion.The data are analyzed and the results are obtained.It shows that the subjective judgment about the emergency degree is different according to the drivers' characteristics for the same situation.Compared with personality and age,driving experience effect is most obvious.The decelerating operation is different according to different emergency degree judged.This research can help us to understand driver behavior under emergency and also offer theory for driver management.

Abstract:There are various factors affecting driving behavior and each factor has different levels to be discussed in detail, which makes it very difficult to analyze how each factor affects driving behavior. To analyze driving behavior effectively, it is essential to determine what factors are the key affecting factors. Therefore, based on the orthogonal experimental design theory, this paper designs an analysis experiment on driving behavior and puts forward a method to identity the key factors affecting driving behavior. In turn, the method greatly aids in conducting effective experiments on driving behavior and in the efficient analysis of experimental data.

Abstract:Emergency takeover is a common form of human-machine interaction in existing advanced driver assistance systems. It is significant to Study the behavioral characteristics of drivers during emergency takeover events. However, few studies have considered the differences in driver's demand for Time-to-Request Lead Time (TORlt) under different risk element compositions and the influence of experience accumulation on interaction requirements. In this study, a 3×3 lane-changing obstacle avoidance simulation experiment was designed with TORlt and vehicle speed as variables. A total of 18 drivers with low driving experience participated in two rounds of experiments with the data recording. We employed three dimensions of takeover time, quality, and experience. This study selected eight indicators, including perception and decision time, exposure ratio in risk areas, and minimum collision time, to assess drivers' performance during emergency takeovers. The analysis examined the differential impact of various experimental variables, experience accumulation on these indicators, and drivers' compensatory behaviors across different scenario designs. The findings reveal that the interaction between different vehicle speeds and TORlt designs results in dynamic driver takeover performance fluctuations. Although the accumulation of takeover experience enhances drivers' performance, it also elicits negative adaptive behaviors to some extent.

Abstract:Driving1 behaviour diversity is one of the key issues in related studies. In recent years, influence of beverage type to human behaviour has got more and more research attention. How beverage type influence driving behaviour is a new research topic. In this paper, beverage type is considered as independent variables with driving behaviour being dependent variable. The independent variable has two levels, water and black tea. Experimental study is carried out with virtual driving on a driving simulator. Totally 54 subjects in two groups participated the experiments. Experimental data show that compared with drinking water, drinking black tea obviously reduced maximum deceleration of driving, and influence of black tea on average acceleration of driving is critically significant. The results show that drinking black tea may lead to increasing safety level of driving behaviour in disasters and may help with driving performance. The results of this paper may provide scientific support to emergency management in disasters.

Abstract:The disaster environment may has impact on driving behavior, but there are few studies focus on it. In this paper, the sudden earthquake disaster is selected as the research background, and a questionnaire survey combined with experimental research method is used to investigate the impact of driver's risk perception on driving behaviour when performing altruistic task in disasters. An empirical analysis shows that, 1) Driver's risk perception is significantly and positively correlated with average acceleration, while driver's risk perception is weakly and negatively correlated with maximum deceleration. 2) Driver's risk perception has a significant impact on average acceleration, while driver's risk perception has a marginally significant on maximum deceleration. The results show that stronger ability of risk perception may lead to increasing safety level of driving behaviour in disasters and may help with driving performance. The results of this paper may provide scientific support to emergency management in disasters.

Abstract:A major, but unstudied, cause of crashes in China is drivers that "scramble" to gain the right of way in violation of traffic regulations. The motivation of this study is to explore the features of drivers' scrambling behaviors and the attitudes and driving skills that influence them. In this study, we established a scrambling behavior scale, and developed a driving attitude scale and a driving skill scale using factor analysis of an Internet survey of 486 drivers in Beijing. A structural equation model of scrambling behavior toward cars and pedestrians/cyclists was developed with attitudes and skills as predictors of behavior. Skills and attitudes of approval toward violations of traffic rules did not predict scrambling behaviors, while the motivation for safety and attitudes against violating traffic rules led to reduced scrambling behaviors. The current work highlights this peculiar aspect of Chinese roads and suggests methods to reduce the behavior.

Abstract:As traffic safety has become a major health issue in China, it is crucial to characterize driving behavior and provide feasible suggestions to traffic safety works. A semi-structured interview was conducted to understand Chinese drivers’ views of driving behavior and traffic safety works. The results show that the respondents have a clear understanding of safe driving behavior and believe that traffic regulations should be improved. Then, the cause of the accident experienced by respondents was divided into two categories: error and violation. Finally, the respondents provided recommendations for traffic safety work, indicating the importance of equal emphasis on hardware and software. The results of this study give useful information about driving behavior and traffic safety work in China from drivers’ perspectives.
Understanding Take-over Performance of High Crash Risk Drivers During Conditionally Automated Driving

Abstract:Understanding driver behavior of conditionally automated driving is necessary to ensure a safe transition from automated to manual driving. This study aimed to examine the difference in take-over performance between high crash risk (HCR) and lower crash risk (LCR) drivers in emergency take-over situations during conditionally automated driving. In the current simulator study, a 3 x 3 (within-subjects) factorial design was used, including the task factors (no task, reading the news, and watching a video) and time budget factors (time budget = 3 s, 4 s, and 5 s). Forty-eight participants completed a WA drive on an approximately 10 km long two-way six-lane urban road. The participants firstly were in manual control and then switched to the automated driving mode at a speed of 50 km/h. The automated driving system was able to detect a broken car in the ego-lane and requested the driver to take over the control of the vehicle. There are at least one or two other vehicles or motorcycles on each side of the ego-vehicle, resulting in fewer escape paths. For the two non-handheld non-driving-related tasks (NDRTs), the participants were asked to be fully engaged in a task without any need to monitor the road environments. Each participant completed nine emergency take-over situations. The participants were classified into two groups that were labeled LCR (N <= 2) and HCR drivers (N >= 3) according to the number of accidents per driver. The results show that LCR drivers had shorter brake reaction time compared to HCR drivers. For all drivers, the engagement in a task led to longer response times, and the time budget affected the longitudinal vehicle control. In addition, the task affected the response times for LCR and HCR drivers, but only the time budget affected the longitudinal vehicle control for LCR drivers. For all drivers, LCR and HCR drivers, the time budget and task affected the safety of take-over. Especially, the two non-handheld everyday tasks seem to have a similar effect on the drivers' workload. Therefore, the HCR drivers had a lower hazard perception compared to the LCR drivers, and the factor regarding the individual difference of driving ability in take-over situations should be considered to design safe take-over concepts for automated vehicles.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate driver braking behaviour under near-crash scenarios in one district of China. Real traffic scenarios were first collected using video drive recorder and these scenarios were screened and classified and then six typical types of near-crash scenarios were obtained. Then by processing the video images and analysing the velocity curves, driver braking behaviour under these six typical types of scenarios, especially the scenarios of ‘following vehicle approaching a decelerating lead vehicle’, was extracted and analysed. Finally, the driver brake reaction time, average deceleration during the emergency braking phase and the timing of emergency braking initiation were obtained. The results obtained in the paper can be used in the development of advanced driver assistance systems compatible with special Chinese traffic conditions.
