Abstract:The study of non-cooperative underwater acoustic communication (UAC) has attracted more attention from the perspective of information security. Nevertheless, the presence of non-cooperative UAC has faced a significant obstacle mostly due to the uncertainty of non-cooperative subjects engaged in the communication process. This challenge is further intertwined with other adverse variables, such as substantial multipath and Doppler effects in the underwater acoustic channel. To tackle this problem, the task of accurately identifying modulation types and effectively estimating the parameters of UAC synchronization signals is a crucial step. The synchronization signal marks the beginning of a frame of data, and in non-cooperative UAC, it enables the identification of data signals that follow it. In this paper, we propose a method based on delay autocorrelation to identify synchronization signals, specifically linear frequency modulation (LFM) signals and hyperbolic frequency modulation (HFM) signals, as well as to estimate their parameters. LFM and HFM signals are often used in UAC for time synchronization because of their favourable anti-Doppler and autocorrelation characteristics. In this method, first, the algorithm of delay autocorrelation is used to identify LFM and HFM by utilizing their different bandwidths within the spectrum. Subsequently, the maximum energy frequency algorithm based on delay au-tocorrelation spectrum is presented for parameter estimation after identification. Furthermore, we analyze the feasibility of the algorithms under multipath channels. The performance of the proposed method has been validated through the simulation and the experiments carried out in an anechoic tank and the sea trial.
