Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials, such as 0D fullerenes, 1D carbon nanotubes, and 2D graphene, have been pivotal in advancing material science. Carbon nanocoils (CNCs), a novel 3D carbon nanomaterial with a unique helical structure, have attracted considerable attention for their potential in diverse applications. The 3D helical feature leads to point contacts between adjacent CNCs, which reduce intermolecular forces and prevent agglomeration, creating a conductive network with significant potential for sensitive sensors and flexible wearable devices. Moreover, the spiral periodic structure of CNCs not only engenders spatial order and porosity but also allows them to serve as natural scaffolds for assembling other materials into 3D structures, making them ideal for electrochemical energy storage. CNCs exhibit intrinsic chirality, which imparts cross-polarization properties essential for high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption. Additionally, CNCs show excellent biocompatibility and efficient photothermal conversion, making them suitable for diverse biological applications. This review initially elucidates the synthesis and growth mechanisms of CNCs. Subsequently, their fundamental physicochemical properties are systematically and comprehensively summarized. Then a critical discussion is presented on the design considerations of CNC-based materials for sensing, energy storage, electromagnetic wave absorption, and biological applications. At last, current challenges and future perspectives in the research of CNC-based materials are highlighted.
