Abstract:A steady state model for coal gasification process in a slurry-feed-type entrained-flow gasifier is developed with partitioning zone approach. The gasification process is conceptually divided into two zones: combustion zone where oxygen is existent and gasification zone where oxygen is not existent. The combustion zone is treated as a black box where the process of coal pyrolysis and the oxygenous reaction are completely finished. The gasification zone is partitioned into compartment-in-series along the reactor height and lumped parameter is assumed in each compartment. The model is respectively developed for combustion zone and gasification zone by means of element mass balance, matter mass balance and energy balance. For testing the validity of model, a comparison between the computed results based on the model and the practical data published in literature has been made and the results show the model is effective.

Abstract:A comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) numerical model is developed for simulation of entrained Coal Slurry gasifiers. In this model, a presumed probability density function (PDF) method is used to consider turbulent effects oil gas-phase reactions in the gasifier. A realizable k-epsilon model is adopted to predict turbulence information. Coal slurry particles are tracked with the Lagrangian Method. The coal Slurry gasification process is divided into several Simple Subprocesses, which are droplet evaporation, boiling, devolatilization, and heterogeneous reactions of coal char particles. The particle-source-in-cell method is adopted to couple gas-particle interactions. With this methodology, simulations For GE and staged coal Slurry gasifiers are completed, A comparison between the predictions and measured data shows that the proposed model correctly predicts the global performance of the coal gasification process. The mixing process in the staged gasifier is better than that in the GE gasifier because of the existence of secondary flow. The particle size has a negative effect oil coal conversion. The effects of the coal slurry concentration c and molar ratio of oxygen/carbon oil the gasifier performance are also Studied in this paper.

Abstract:A computational particle fluid dynamics simulation model for entrained-flow gasification was established in this study. The simulation results agree with the experimental data. The detailed particle information and residence-time distribution were obtained by injecting particle tracers in the simulation. The results show that the particles in the gasifier can be classified into three flowing zones, i.e. a fast-flowing zone, a recirculation zone and a spreading zone. The criterion for this classification was also provided. The rapid gas expansion caused by the fast reactions plays a significant role in forming the particle stream into these three zones. It accelerates the particles in the centre of the gasifier while pushing the particles near the expansion edge into the gas recirculation. Also, the concentrated oxygen distribution in the gasifier results in the formation of high- and low-temperature regions. The particles in the fast-flowing zone flow directly through the high-temperature region and most of these particles in this zone were fully reacted with a short residence time. Since particles in the recirculation zone are in a relatively low-temperature region, most of these particles are not fully gasified, although with a long residence time. The rest of particles in the spreading zone show moderate properties between the above two zones.

Abstract:The flow behaviors of the coal particles during coal gasification in the entrained-flow gasifier are closely related to the stable operation of the gasifier, while it is difficult to observe the particles during the operation of the gasifier due to the influence of high-temperature environment and complex atmosphere. In this study, based on a bench-scale opposed multi-burner (OMB) coal-water slurry (CWS) entrained-flow gasifier and an advanced visualization system composed of a high-temperature endoscope and a high-speed camera, the flow and rotation behaviors of the coal particles near the burner plane are investigated. The region near the burner plane is divided into jet zone and impinging core. The particle trajectories in the two zones are tracked. The particle velocity distribution and velocity fluctuation index are calculated. The particle rotation and flame oscillation behaviors are quantified. The results show that the proportion of total particle trajectories in the impinging core is higher than that of the jet zone. The velocity of the particles is mostly distributed in the range of 0–4 m/s. The particle fluctuation index in the impinging core is greater than that in the jet zone, indicating that the impinging flow is more unstable in comparison with the jet flow. The particle rotation angular velocity fluctuates within a certain range, while the fluctuation range of flame oscillation angular velocity is extremely great and can be easily disturbed by the flow field. For a single particle undergoing volatile oxidation, flame oscillation and particle rotation are isotropic. The flow field near the burner plane is reconstructed based on particle flow behaviors. The reconstruction results can be applied to verify the simulation of flow field.

Abstract:Coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) contains an amount of residual carbon, which not only increases the difficulty of utilizing it as a resource but also hinders the efficient and low-carbon operation of gasification processes. In this study, the physicochemical properties, distribution modes and formation mechanisms of different CGFS particle size fractions were investigated. The CGFS particles with size > 180 μm showed the lowest degree of graphitization, the particles in the range of 75 − 180 μm contained the most residual carbon, and the particles < 45 μm exhibited the least roughness. The carbon and ash fractions of CGFS show embedded, crosslink and discrete distribution modes, while the evolutionary process of raw coal particles in the gasifier can be divided into three stages: initial, transitional and late. Due to the different reaction histories experienced by the raw coal particles in the gasifier, the three carbon ash distribution modes do not occur independently.

Abstract:There is a large range of time and length scales of turbulent fluctuations in an entrained flow coal gasifier, To figure out the turbulent effects Oil coal gasification processes and the controlling mechanisms of different regions ill all entrained flow coal gasifier. the characteristic time and length scales for all major processes are estimated. Oil the basis of the comparison between the length/time scales of turbulent mixing in all ranges and the characteristic time of homo- and heterogeneous reactions, turbulent effects on reactions and coal gasification processes in different regions in all entrained coal gasifier are studied. In the flame region, there is 1 Strong coupling effect between macro-scale turbulent fluctuation and heterogeneous reactions. The combustion of the volatile is strongly affected by the fluctuation of micro-scale Kolmogorov scales because the diffusion boundary layer of the particles is destroyed by this kind of fluctuation. In the nonflame region, the heterogeneous char gasification reactions are not affected by turbulent fluctuations; however, the coupling effect between turbulent mixing and gas-phase reactions should not be omitted.

Abstract:The research object in this paper is an industrial HTL gasifier in a plant. A three-dimensional model is built. The chemical percolation devolatilization (CPD) model is used to calculate the pyrolysis reaction. Considering the gas diffusion in the inner pores of the particle and the evolution of pore structure, the random pore model (RPM) was used to simulate the chemical reaction on the particle surface, and the gasification reaction kinetic parameter of char was measured by high-pressure thermogravimetry analysis. The slag model was constructed to describe the formation process and distribution of slag. Through the coupling of the above models, a simulation method that combines several submodels for the entrained flow gasifier is built, and the results from simulation are in good agreement with the industrial data. Furthermore, the effect of the uniformity of pulverized coal injection was analyzed by this method. The simulation results reflect that the asymmetric feed of coal will affect gas-solid mixing and reduce carbon conversion, and it leads to a higher local wall temperature and a lower ratio of crude slag to fine slag.

Abstract:Coal slime, a low-calorific-value fuel, is a by-product during coal washing, which can be disposed in quantity and fully utilized in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler. This research paid attention to the ignition and combustion behaviors of single coal slime particles, which affect the normal combustion, operation stability and burning efficiency in circulating fluidized bed boiler. The ignition and combustion behaviors including ignition mechanism, ignition delay, ignition temperature and combustion process of single coal slime particles in a vertical heating tube furnace in CO2/O-2 atmosphere were researched under different operation condition parameters, for different gas temperatures (T-g =923,1073, and 1173 K), gas flow rates (V= 0-20 L/min), and oxygen mole concentrations (O-2 %=5-80%). Coal slime particle had three ignition mechanisms in CO2/O-2 atmosphere, namely, homogeneous ignition of volatiles at the windward and leeside of particle, heterogeneous ignition of char and heterogeneous ignition of coal. Only heterogeneous ignition of char and homogeneous ignition of volatiles at the windward of particle occurred in quiescent atmosphere. However, homogeneous ignition region decreased while heterogeneous ignition region increased gradually with the increasing flow rates in the oxygen concentration-gas temperature plane. Different ignition mechanisms were accompanied with various combustion processes. The combustion processes corresponding to heterogeneous ignition of char changed from nameless combustion to flaming combustion as oxygen concentration increased. Moreover, the critical oxygen concentration elevated from 30% to 50% with the increasing flow rate. The ignition temperatures and ignition delays decreased with the increasing gas temperature and oxygen concentration. As the flow rate increased, the trends became more obvious in medium-to-low oxygen concentrations. Compared with the ignition characteristics and combustion processes of coal slime particles in N-2/O-2 atmosphere, those in CO2/O-2 atmosphere were suppressed due to the higher mole heat capacity and lower diffusion rate of oxygen molecule in CO2. Experiment study on staged entrained flow coal gasification

Abstract:A new gasification process, named staged entrained flow gasification process is introduced in this paper. A tested gasifier with 1820mm height and 350mm diameter is built up. Using coal water slurry (CWS) as the feedstock, series of hot experiment of traditional continuous CWS gasification and staged gasification process have been carried out under different operation conditions. When the secondary stage O2is supplied, it was found that the average temperature in gasifier is increased, and as a result the reaction is intensified and more syngas is produced. According to the results comparison, it is found that there are optimized ratios of O/C and the second stage O 2. What is more, in staged process, the same carbon conversion and cold gas efficiency as under continuous gasification process can be obtained at a lower ratio of O/C. The validity and feasibility of staged entrained gasification process are confirmed by hot experiment results.

Abstract:Interactions between a reacting particle and the surrounding fluid are complex due to the interplay between flow dynamics, heat and mass transfer, and chemical reactions. In the present work, particle–fluid transport processes in supercritical water gasification of coal are studied using high-fidelity interface-resolved direct numerical simulations. The impact of different factors on the particle–fluid interactions are evaluated by performing simulations of the flow around two-dimensional particles considering different numerical configurations. The outgoing Stefan flow from the particle surface is found to cause expanded boundary layers for velocity, heat, and species. The temperature-induced changes in transport properties around a heated particle lead to a higher drag force and decreased heat/mass transport; those differences are further enlarged when taking into account the volumetric expansion of the fluid. Transport limitation for coal gasification in a realistic configuration is finally investigated. Temperature-induced fluid dilatation is then the major factor affecting drag force and heat transfer around the reacting particle, and mass transport is significantly impacted by species production or consumption in the boundary layer. Reaction heat release and variations in fluid composition within the thermal boundary layer lead to a slight enhancement of heat transfer. This work reveals and quantifies the main mechanisms affecting the exchanges between a reacting coal particle and surrounding supercritical water regarding both thermal and chemical aspects. It also provides high-fidelity data to later fit the reduced models needed for simulations of large-scale supercritical water gasification installations.

Abstract:Air-blown gasification in a lab-scale bubbling fluidized gasifier reactor with continuous coal feedstock is numerically investigated by employing the reactive multiphase particle-in-cell (MP-PIC) approach in which the gas and solid motions are respectively tracked in the Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks. After comparing the numerical predictions with experimental measurements, the particle-scale thermochemical properties of coal particles together with the effects of operating parameters are comprehensively explored. The results show that the lateral and vertical segregation in the gasifier remarkably affects the thermochemical distributions of coal particles (i.e., temperature, heat transfer coefficient, constituents, residence time, slip velocity, and particle Reynolds number). Close to coal inlet, coal particles have a small temperature, large heat transfer coefficient, and high content of moisture and volatile. Spatial distribution of slip velocity is similar to that of particle Reynolds number. Enlarging the air flow rate strengthens the coal gasification due to the decreased mass and the promotion of char conversion in the gasifier. The residence time distribution of coal particles in the reactor presents an "early peak with a long tail" feature. The air flow rate and gasification temperature exert an obvious impact on the carbon content in the exiting coal particles. The increase of gasification temperature and air flow rate obviously promote the carbon conversion efficiency. The numerical results regarding the thermochemical behaviors of coal gasification in the bubbling fluidized gasifier reactor shed light on the design and optimization of this kind of reactor.

Abstract:A reactive multiphase particle-in-cell approach is developed to explore the air-blown coal gasification in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor. The model is validated by comparing the predicted bed hydrodynamics and product yields with experimental data. Subsequently, the gas thermal properties and particle-scale behaviours are comprehensively explored. The results show that: (i) the density difference between two solid species gives rise to spatial segregation, which further affects the gasification process. The presence of coal feeding port causes the non-uniform distribution of bed hydrodynamics. (ii) the combustible gases species distribute above the coal feeding port. The concentration of gas species continuously increases while the gas temperature changes little in the dense region. (iii) the slip velocity of sand particles ranges from 0 to 4 m/s; the temperature ranges from 1000 K to 1150 K, and the heat transfer coefficient ranges from 80 W/(m2·K) to 200 W/(m2·K). Compared with sand, coal particles have a larger heat transfer coefficient and particle Reynolds number (Rep). Coal particles reach the maximum temperature of about 1100 K in the period of 3 s after being injected into the bed. (iv) bubble and emulsion phases give a larger Rep and smaller Rep due to the dominant role of the interphase drag force and inter-particle collision force, respectively.

Abstract:As the initial step in coal combustion and gasification, pyrolysis plays an important role in chemical reactions. The influencing mechanism of superfine particle on gas phase products during rapid pyrolysis remains problematic. In this paper, the formation and dissipation mechanism of the gas phase products especially CO, light hydrocarbons and NOX precursors of superfine pulverized coal pyrolyzed in an entrained flow reactor is focused. Pyrolysis experiments are taken out in Ar and N2 respectively. The influence of particle size, coal rank, pyrolysis atmosphere and the final pyrolysis temperature on the formation and dissipation are analyzed. In addition, pore structures of raw coal and chars are also characterized by synchrotron radiation facility to better reveal the pyrolysis mechanism. Our results indicate that as the particle size decreases, the content of CO, light hydrocarbons and NOX precursors all show a trend of first increase and then decrease. Lower rank coal has larger release concentration of gas phase products. Additionally, with the increment of the final pyrolysis temperature, there is a decrease trend of light hydrocarbons and NOX precursors but an increase trend of CO. The fractal dimension (DSAXS) increases with the increase of the final pyrolysis temperature.
Experimental Study of Particle Distribution in Bench-cale Opposed Multi-burner Gasifiers of Coal Water Slurry

Abstract: Particle distribution in gasifier has important influence on syngas, carbon conversion and slag deposition. Based on a bench-scale opposed multi-burner (OMB) gasifier, particle size and composition were measured by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) and Malvern laser particle size analyzer. The results show that there are two kinds of microstructure of particles in gasifier. With the increase of atom ratio of oxygen to carbon, average particle size and fixed carbon content reduce downwards the axis of gasifier while the mass percentage of fine particles increases. The pyrolysis of coal occurs mainly in the impinging flame region, whereas combustion and gasification take place in both impinging flame region and plug flow region. The mass ratio of burned fixed carbon in the two regions is about 2:1.

The three dimensional particle dynamics analyzer has been used to measure the gas phase velocity, solid phase velocity, solid particle diameter, solid particle concentration and turbulence intensity under different experimental conditions. Abstract:Coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) is one of the by-products of coal gasification process, which is mainly composed of inorganic minerals and residual carbon. The key to realize the high-value utilization of CGFS is separating the residual carbon and mineral in CGS effectively. Owing to irregular distribution of carbon in different size of CGFS, which could not be enriched by simple grinding and screening for component enrichment. In this paper, the enrichment of CGFS was carried out by the float-sink method, which is low-cost and does not result in the loss of raw materials. The carbon-rich particles (CRP, ash: 27.89%) and mineral-rich particles (MRP, ash: 78.01%) were obtained, where CRP contains a large amount of amorphous carbon with rich porous structure, while MRP is a heterogeneous material containing not only inorganic minerals but also organic carbon with low porosity. The mineral particles exist as aluminosilicates with a high degree of polymerization. The results of this paper will provide theoretical and technical support for the high-value utilization of CGFS.

Abstract:The hydrodynamic and thermochemical characteristics in the coal-direct chemical looping combustion (CLC) process are studied by a self-developed computational fluid dynamics - discrete element method (CFD-DEM) approach featuring particle-scale simulations of collisions, heat and mass transfer, drying process, coal pyrolysis, gasification, and heterogeneous reactions between gas species and oxygen carriers. A polydisperse drag model is adopted to accurately calculate gas-solid interactions. After comprehensive model validations, the flow pattern, pressure drop, gas products composition, particle temperature, combustion efficiency, and solid residence time (SRT) are qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. The results show that increasing the coal feeding rate slightly improves the temperature of coal particles and accelerates the release of moisture in coal particles. Finer oxygen carriers promote the conversion of intermediate gas products into CO2 and H2O, therefore improving the combustion efficiency in the CLC process. The SRT distribution with an early peak and a long tail is profoundly revealed under different operating parameters. A dual-side coal feeding arrangement remarkably improves the uniformity in the CLC system.

Abstract:In order to study the character of the flow field and the gasification performance of staged gasification technology, numerical simulation for a staged entrained flow coal gasifier located in Shanxi province was conducted based on Fluent. Body fitted hexahedron mesh was used to minimize the numerical diffusion due to mesh quality. Realizable k-e model was adopted to make a closure for turbulence equations. dispersed phase model (DPM) and stochastic tracking method (STM) were used to describe the coal particle gasification process and to predict the turbulent disturbance effects on particle motion. A combustion table was built by presumed PDF model to describe the relationship between mixture fraction and the scalars of temperature, species, et al. In addition, User Defined Functions was used to modify the heterogeneous char gasification reaction model in Fluent. The analysis of the flow field and the contours of temperature of the staged entrained flow coal gasifier show that the engulfment and the counter flow aroused by the secondary injection strengthen the mixing process in the staged gasifier. This had a positive effect on the improvement of coal conversion rate.
DEM–CFD Simulation of the Particle Dispersion in a Gas–solid Two-Phase Flow for a Fuel-Rich/lean Burner

Abstract:To predict the particle dispersion in the burner jet is of great importance in industrial application and in the designing of coal burner with good performance. The objective of this study was to numerically investigate the particle dispersion mechanisms in the gas–solid two-phase jet from a fuel rich/lean burner. The detached-eddy-simulation (DES) approach was employed to study the turbulent flow in the fuel rich/lean separator and the gas–solid multiphase jet from the exit of a fuel rich/lean burner. The vortex shedding process was simulated and its effect on the fuel rich/lean separating performance was evaluated. Combined with the Lagrangian tracking procedure for the particle phase, the coal particles with various Stokes numbers equal to 0.000434, 0.043, 1.08, 4.34 (corresponding to particle diameter 1, 10, 50, 100μm, respectively) in the gas–solid fuel rich/lean jet were studied, which shows that although there are coherent vortex structures behind the central partition plate, these vorticities are small, the fuel-rich stream and the fuel lean stream will not mix quickly downstream of the exit of the nozzle. The large vortex structures at the jet outer boundary are the main factors that make the small particles to mix together. The coal particles with large Stokes number (St>1) disperse very slowly in the jet flow, which realizes the fuel rich/lean combustion in a rather long distance downstream the exit of the nozzle, resulting in low NOx emissions.
