Abstract:A novel Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized from the mixed ligands, 3,3',5,5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H(4)AOBTC) and 1,4-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)benzene (phenDIB) ligand. The crystal structure of the complex exhibits an interpenetrated three-dimensional framework that can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 2-nodal bbf net. This MOF displays extraordinary thermostability in boiling water for 12 h and chemical stability in a wide pH range of 2-13. The most intriguing feature is that it can successfully separate cationic dyes from mixed dye molecules in aqueous solution with high effectivity and selectivity, even for rhodamine B molecule with a large size. Furthermore, this material is reusable, and the adsorbed dye molecules can be released and recovered completely. It is very important for the practical application from a view of environmental protection and resource recycling.

Abstract:The development of simple, versatile strategies for the synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived membranes are of increasing scientific interest, but challenges exist in understanding suitable fabrication mechanisms. Here we report a route for the complete transformation of a series of MOF membranes and particles, based on multivalent cation substitution. Through our approach, the effective pore size can be reduced through the immobilization of metal salt residues in the cavities, and appropriate MOF crystal facets can be exposed, to achieve competitive molecular sieving capabilities. The method can also be used more generally for the synthesis of a variety of MOF membranes and particles. Importantly, we design and synthesize promising MOF membranes candidates that are hard to achieve through conventional methods. For example, our CuBTC/MIL-100 membrane exhibits 89, 171, 241 and 336 times higher H2 permeance than that of CO2, O2, N2 and CH4, respectively.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional porous metal-organic framework, {[NH2(CH3)(2)][Zn(atz)(ox)]center dot H2O}(n) (1) (Hatz = 5-amino-1H-tetrazole, H(2)ox = oxalic acid), has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 exhibits an anionic framework that can be simplified as a rarely reported 4-connected lon network. Complex 1 could be utilized as a platform for emission tuning by doping different lanthanide ions. In addition, gas adsorption studies reveal that 1 has a high isosteric heat of CO2 and good adsorption selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and N-2.

Abstract:Three new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {[Zn(L)(HCOO)(H2O)]center dot H2O)(n) (1), {Cd(L)(2)}(n) (2) and {Co(L)(BDC)(0.5)(H2O)}(n) (3) [HL = 3,5-di(pyridine-4-yl)benzoic acid, H2BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid] were synthesized by hydro/solvothermal reactions and characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 is a two-dimensional (2D) network with {6(3)} topology, which is further assembled into a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture through hydrogen bonding interactions. Complex 2 is a 2-fold interpenetrating 3D framework with a point (Schlafli) symbol of {6(3)}{6(7).8(3)}, while 3 is a 3D net formed by interpenetration of 2D bilayers (2D + 2D -> 3D) with a point (Schlafli) symbol of {6(3)}{6(6)}. Selective and hysteretic sorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) was found for 3 at 195 K, and the photoluminescence properties of 1 and 2 were investigated.

Abstract:Two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Dy(BDC)(NO3)(DMF)2] n (1, H2BDC = terephthalic acid) and [Dy(BDC)(NO3)] n (1a), were synthesized. The structures of MOFs 1 and 1a are easy to be reversibly transformed into each other by the desorption or adsorption of coordination solvent molecules. Accordingly, their magnetic properties can also be changed reversibly, which realizes our goals of manipulating on/off single-molecule magnet behaviour. MOF 1 behaves as a single-molecule magnet either with or without DC field. Contrarily, no slow magnetic relaxation was observed in 1a both under zero field and applied field.

Abstract:In this work, we have demonstrated an unprecedented single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation between two 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The centrosymmetric IFMC-68 ([(Zn4O)2(L)3]·10H2O·46DMA) transforms into a chiral IFMC-69 ([(Zn4O)2(L)3H2O]·H2O·4DMA) doubly triggered by reaction temperature and time simultaneously in the presence or absence of solvent. To our knowledge, this is the first representative that the non-interpenetrated structure transforms into self-penetrated structure in MOFs. For the first time, we have studied the influence of reaction temperature and time on SCSC transformation, simultaneously, and get the transformation relationship among IFMC-68, IFMC-69 and the intermediate coming from the direct synthesis method and stepwise synthesis method at different temperatures and for different times. Meanwhile, we have achieved the conversion from an air-unstable to air-stable structure. Air-stable IFMC-69 exhibits the selective CO2 uptake over N2 and more excellent gas adsorption ability than IFMC-68. In addition, IFMC-69 shows an efficient capability in reversible adsorption of iodine. The electrical conductivity value (σ) of I2@IFMC-69 is much higher than the pristine MOF and thus is promising for potential semiconductor materials in the future.

Abstract:A bifunctional ligand strategy for modification of the functional pores is of great significance in the structural design of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, a new 2-fold interpenetrated "pillared-layer" 3D Co-MOF, {[Co(HL)(4,4′-bipy)]·DMF·2H2O}n (1), was successfully synthesized by using two kinds of ligands, imidazolecarboxylic acid and pyridine. The metal–carboxylic layers are pillared by the 4,4′-bipy ligand, displaying a 3D framework with rectangular 3D channels (high BET surface of 190.9 m2 g–1 and maximum aperture of 3.9 Å) that are decorated with abundant uncoordinated N and O atoms. 1 shows good water stability and thermal stability (320 °C). The proper pores and active sites endowed 1 with a selective adsorption of Congo red in aqueous solution. Abstract:A combination of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and chemical fixation in a one-step process is attractive for chemists and environmentalists. In this work, by incorporating chelating multiamine sites to enhance the binding affinity toward CO2, two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Zn2(L)(2,6-NDC)2(H2O)]·1.5DMF·2H2O (1) and [Cd2(L)(2,6-NDC)2]·1.5DMF·2H2O (2) (L = N1-(4-(1 H-1,2,4-triazole-1-yl)benzyl)- N1-(2-aminoethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine, 2,6-H2NDC = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, DMF = N, N-dimethylformamide) were achieved under solvothermal conditions. Both 1 and 2 possess high selectivity for adsorption of CO2 over CH4 at room temperature under atmospheric pressure. Moreover, 1 has one-dimensional tubular channels decorated with multiactive sites including NH2 groups and coordination unsaturated Lewis acid metal sites, leading to efficient catalytic activity for chemical fixation of CO2 by reaction with epoxides to give cyclic carbonates under mild conditions.

Abstract:A new 2D flexible cobalt( II ) framework (Co-MOF) exhibits a reversible solid-state structural transformation upon guest molecule removal/uptake. After activation, Co-MOF-α with 1D porous channels transformed into Co-MOF-β (0D voids) accompanied by a shift in metal and carboxylate coordination modes, the rotation of organic linkers and the contraction of interstitial spaces. Gas adsorption experiments reveal that Co-MOF-β exhibits a two-step CO 2 adsorption isotherm and close-to-open (type F-IV) isotherms for C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 at 195 K. Moreover, it shows typical type I adsorption isotherms for the above gases and the selective uptake of C 2 H 2 over CH 4 and CO 2 at room temperature.

Abstract:A new hierarchical MOF consisting of Cu(II) centers connected by benzene-tricarboxylates (BTC) is prepared by thermoinduced solid transformation of a dense CuBTC precursor phase. The mechanism of the material formation has been thoroughly elucidated and revealed a transformation of a ribbon-like 1D building unit into 2D layers and finally a 3D network. The new phase contains excess copper, charge compensated by systematic hydroxyl groups, which leads to an open microporous framework with tunable permanent mesoporosity. The new phase is particularly attractive for molecular separation. Energy consumption of adsorptive separation processes can be lowered by using adsorbents that discriminate molecules based on adsorption entropy rather than enthalpy differences. In separation of a 11-component mixture of C1-C6 alkanes, the hierarchical phase outperforms the structurally related microporous HKUST-1 as well as silicate-based hierarchical materials. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation provides microscopic insight into the structural host-guest interaction, confirming low adsorption enthalpies and significant entropic contributions to the molecular separation. The unique three-dimensional hierarchical structure as well as the systematic presence of Cu(II) unsaturated coordination sites cause this exceptional behavior.

Abstract:A highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF) incorporating two kinds of second building units (SBUs), i.e., dimeric paddlewheel (Zn-2 (COO)(4)) and tetrameric (Zn-4(O) (CO2)(6)), is successfully assembled by the reaction of a tricarboxylate ligand with Zn-II ion. Subsequently, single-crystal-to-single-crystal metal cation exchange using the constructed MOF is investigated, and the results show that Cu-II and Co-II ions can selectively be introduced into the MOF without compromising the crystallinity of the pristine framework. This metal cation-exchangeable MOF provides a useful platform for studying the metal effect on both gas adsorption and catalytic activity of the resulted MOFs. While the gas adsorption experiments reveal that Cu-II and Co-II exchanged samples exhibit comparable CO2 adsorption capability to the pristine Zn-II-based MOF under the same conditions, catalytic investigations for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxides into related carbonates demonstrate that Zn-II-based MOF affords the highest catalytic activity as compared with Cu-II and Co-II exchanged ones. Molecular dynamic simulations are carried out to further confirm the catalytic performance of these constructed MOFs on chemical fixation of CO2 to carbonates. This research sheds light on how metal exchange can influence intrinsic properties of MOFs.

Abstract:A new organic ligand of 1,1′-biphenyl-containing tetra-carboxylic acid (H4BPTT) and its first metal-organic framework [Zn2(BPTT)(H2O)2]n·(DMF)4.5n (1) was designed, synthesized and structurally characterized exhibiting two-dimensional distorted (4,4) topology. The activated 1a exhibits permanent porosity and moderately high selectivities for CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 gas separations at room temperature.

Abstract:Two new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Cd-3(tib)(2)(BPT)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot DMA center dot 6H2O (1) and [Zn2(tib)(HBTB)2(H2O)]center dot 2H2O (2) (tib=1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene, H3BPT=biphenyl-3,4',5-tricarboxylic acid, H3BTB=4,4',4 ''-benzene-1,3,5-triyl-tribenzoic acid, DMA=N,N-dimethylacetamide) were synthesized and characterized. Complex 1 is a 4-nodal three-dimensional (3D) framework with point symbol {8(3)}4{8(5).12}{8(6)}2, while 2 is a two-dimensional (2D) network to be joined together by hydrogen bonds to generate a 3D supramolecular structure. Gas/vapor adsorption and luminescence behavior of the two complexes were studied. It is meaningful that 1 and 2 can selectively adsorb CO2 over N-2, and MeOH over EtOH. Furthermore, 1 can selectively detect acetone through a fluorescence quenching mechanism in the organic solvents including MeOH, EtOH, 2-PA, CH3CN, DMF, DMA, THF, CHCl3, CH2Cl2 and acetone.

Abstract:Understanding and predicting the pathways involved in the synthetic process of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) comprised of flexible counterparts has always been a challenging task. The complexity increases manifold when a three-component reaction is involved instead of the conventional two-component system. In this article, we shed light on the self-assembly process of MOFs from a three-component reaction at room temperature involving (a) flexible spanning bis(tridentate) linkers with six N-donor atoms, (b) a conformationally flexible bent dicarboxylate linker, and (c) a divalent metal center preferring at least six-coordination geometry for generating 3D or 2D MOFs. Herein, we report one 3D MOF, {[Cd2(oxdz)2(tpbn)(H2O)2]·2H2O·2C2H5OH}n (1) and two 2D MOFs {[Cd2(oxdz)2(tphn)]·6H2O}n (2) and {[Cd4(oxdz)4(tpon)2]·11H2O·4CH3OH}n (3), where the spacer chain length in the bis(tridentate) linkers is varied, to establish the factors - flexibility and angularity of dual linkers - that govern their formation. This strategy is undoubtedly a paradigm shift, which has opened up a path of designing 3D MOFs comprising of flexible counterparts. Exploiting the inherent polarizability of the oxadiazole moiety in 1-3, ultrafast and selective detection of mesityl oxide is reported at ppb level. Interestingly, a crossover from turn-on to turn-off with respect to the ratio of methanol and water as a solvent media is also noted for 2 and 3. A detailed mechanistic considerations with the help of experimental and computational data are provided to unfold the paths involved.

Abstract:Interpenetration of two or more sublattices is common among many metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, we study the evolution of one zirconium cluster-based, 3,8-connected MOF from its non-interpenetrated (NU-1200) to interpenetrated (STA-26) isomer. We observe this transient catenation process indirectly using ensemble methods, such as nitrogen porosimetry and X-ray diffraction, and directly, using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The approach detailed here will serve as a template for other researchers to monitor the interpenetration of their MOF samples at the bulk and single-particle limits. We investigate the mechanical stability of both lattices experimentally by pressurized in situ X-ray diffraction and nanoindentation as well as computationally with density functional theory calculations. Both lines of study reveal that STA-26 is considerably more mechanically stable than NU-1200. We conclude this study by demonstrating the potential of these MOFs and their mixed phases for the capture of gaseous n-hexane, used as a structural mimic for the chemical warfare agent sulfur mustard gas.

Abstract:Optimizing flexibility by encoding intraframework interactions relies on modulating different anion pillars. The shorter anion pillars play an important part in reducing the skeleton flexibility, which removes trace acetylene from acetylene/ethylene and acetylene/carbon dioxide mixtures simultaneously. It provides a switched approach to achieve the molecular sieving effect without precisely controlling aperture size but resorts to highly sensitive guest‐dependent threshold pressure control. Efficient separation of acetylene (C2H2)/ethylene (C2H4) and acetylene/carbon dioxide (CO2) by adsorption is an industrially promising process, but adsorbents capable of simultaneously capturing trace acetylene from ethylene and carbon dioxide are scarce. Herein, a gate‐opening effect on three isomorphous flexible metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) named Co(4‐DPDS)2MO4 (M = Cr, Mo, W; 4‐DPDS = 4,4‐dipyridyldisulfide) is modulated by anion pillars substitution. The shortest CrO42− strengthens intraframework hydrogen bonding and thus blocks structural transformation after activation, striking a good balance among working capacity, separation selectivity, and trace impurity removal of flexible MOFs out of nearly C2H2/C2H4 and C2H2/CO2 molecular sieving. The exceptional separation performance of Co(4‐DPDS)2CrO4 is confirmed by dynamic breakthrough experiments. It reveals the specific threshold pressures control in anion‐pillared flexible materials enabled elimination of the impurity leakage to realize high purity products through precise control of the intraframework interaction. The adsorption mechanism and multimode structural transformation property are revealed by both calculations and crystallography studies. This work demonstrates the feasibility of modulating flexibility for controlling gate‐opening effect, especially for some cases of significant aperture shrinkage after activation.
