Abstract:Entransy is a newly proposed concept for the analysis and optimization of heat transfer processes, and we do welcome any discussions, comments, and even objections on this topic from our counterparts including Awad's paper [1] entitled, "Entransy is Now Clear." However, we do not accept the conclusions that "entransy is improper and not needed" because there are misreadings and incorrect interpretations in the paper.Awad [1], as well as Bejan [3] cited Grazzini et al.'s paper [2] several times as a proof that "entransy analyses do not provide new results relative to what is already available based on established methods (exergy destruction, entropy generation, and constructal law)." Hence, we have to point out briefly the misreadings and incorrect citations of the entransy-related papers by Grazzini et al. that may result in misunderstanding of our papers. We have stated [4] that there are two methods to introduce the entransy concept. One is induction: based on the analogies among heat conduction, electrical conduction, and fluid flow, the entransy of an incompressible object is defined as G = UT/2 = McvT/2 (U: internal energy, T: temperature, M: mass, and cv: specific heat at constant volume), which corresponds to the electrical potential energy of a capacitor, QveUe/2 (Qve: electrical charge, Ue: electrical voltage) or the gravitation potential energy of a fluid in a vessel with constant cross section, MgH/2 (g: gravity acceleration, H: water height, M: water mass); and the other is deduction: According to the Einstein's mass-energy equivalence, the heat transfer process in dielectrics is actually a flow of a weighable phonon gas, i.e., thermomass, U/c2, in a dielectric, which has a potential energy, Eh = cvTU/2c2 (c: speed of light). Therefore, the entransy and the potential of the thermomass have the relation, G = Ehc2/c, where both cv and c are normally assumed to be constant. The consistency between different derivations is not a flaw but a proof that entransy has the nature of potential energy.Yes, in thermodynamics, the changes of such forms of energy as heat and work obviously are path functions because they depend on the paths followed between states. However, internal energy variation for an incompressible object without work interaction depends on the temperature only, which does not violate thermodynamics. In addition, as indicated in a thermodynamic textbook [5], "any property that can be expressed uniquely as a function of state properties must itself be a function of state. Therefore, all the thermodynamics properties u, h, s, … which may be expressed as functions of temperature and pressure alone are state property." Similarly, entransy is a function of temperature, and it is also a state property with specific physical significances and applications. We have shown that entransy is a simplified expression for the potential energy of phonon gas with the proportional coefficient, c2/cv, entransy dissipation is also a simplified expression of the potential energy dissipation of phonon gas with the same proportional coefficient, c2/cv.Irreversibility is indeed a universal tendency in nature, but entropy generation and exergy destruction are not the only measures of the irreversibility of any heat transfer process. When the transferred heat is used for doing work, the entropy generation is the irreversibility measure and the entropy generation minimum is the heat transfer optimization objective to maximize heat-work conversion efficiency. Oppositely, when the transferred heat is used to only warm or cool an object, the entransy dissipation is the irreversibility measure and the entransy dissipation extreme is the optimization objective to maximize heat transfer coefficient. Please take the sentence as a whole and do not separate it into two parts. For instance, for heat conduction problems with heat flux boundary conditions, the objective of entropy generation minimization is to minimize the average difference of the reciprocal of the temperature, min (Δ(1/T)ave), while that of the entransy extremum principle is to minimize the average temperature difference, min (ΔTave). Due to the same reason, Shah and Skiepko [6] had demonstrated that the heat exchanger effectiveness can be at the maximum, the minimum, or any value in between for 18 different types of heat exchangers when the system entropy generation is minimized.Awad misreads the claim that "the principle of minimum entransy-dissipation-based thermal resistance" in Guo et al. closure [7], Ref. {A4} (A represents the reference number in Awad's paper), as "the 'principle' of minimum entransy dissipation is based on minimizing thermal resistance." The correct understanding is "the principle of minimum thermal resistance based on entransy dissipation." In many articles, we repeatedly claimed that the traditional definition of thermal resistance is only valid in one-dimensional steady-state heat transfer processes without internal heat source, and thus by analogy to the definition of electrical resistance, we defined the total entransy dissipation rate over the squared heat flow rate as the entransy-dissipation-based thermal resistance. Besides, the principle of minimum entransy-dissipation-based thermal resistance can be applied to optimize heat transfer with complicated thermal boundary conditions. In addition, in Eq. (2) of Awad's paper, the author points out that the entransy definition will lead to a wrong result that the greater heat transfer ability belongs to the body with lower temperature. In fact, he did not write the entransy definition correctly. For an incompressible object with constant specific heat, entransy is not equal to half the product of the "heat transfer ability," Q, and the temperature, T, but half the product of the internal energy, U, and the temperature [4]. The entransy of an object represents heat transfer ability during finite time period at a fixed temperature, or the heat release ability to a zero absolute temperature for time. Similar to the gravitational potential energy of water in a vessel that could have the same value for different mass and height, the entransy could have the same value for objects with different internal energies and temperatures. We reaffirm that entransy and entransy dissipation were developed by both induction and deduction, and both of them are of specific physical significances and applications. The principle of minimum entransy-dissipation-based thermal resistance was derived based on the entransy balance equation developed from energy conservation together with the variational method and widely used to optimize heat transfer processes to maximize the heat transfer coefficient. Further details about the entransy concept can be found in the review paper [4]. We do hope those people who are interested in or against the entransy theory could spend their time to read and investigate our publications.
