Abstract:Objective:To analyze the population-based survival rates of patients with primary liver cancer all over the world. Methods:An analysis was performed to compare the population-based survival rates of primary liver cancer cases in different countries or areas, which were identified by searching in MEDLINE,Chinese CNKI and Wanfang databases from January 1980 to August 2010.The one-to five-year observed and relative survival rates were described and compared in the study, including time trend analysis. Results:The survival rates of patients with primary liver cancer increased in most countries or areas during the time intervals of 1970s to 1990s.In some Chinese cities or provinces, such as Taiwan,Tianjin,Shanghai and Beijing, the survival rates were higher than those of other areas, such as Qidong(Jiangsu Province),Changle(Fujian Province),and Liaoning Province.South Europe and USA had higher survival rates of patients with primary liver cancer than North Europe,East Europe and Africa. In general, the survival rates of primary liver cancer patients decreased with age,and the survival rates for females were higher than those for males. Conclusion:It is necessary to pay more attention to the prevention and treatment of primary liver cancer as its prognosis is still poor among the most common cancers worldwide.
