Abstract:Objective: To summarize the curative effects of surgery on primary cardiac tumors and discuss the experience in the clinical diagnosis and surgical treatment of primary cardiac tumors. Methods: From Jan 2000 to Dec 2009, 138 patients with primary cardiac tumors received surgery in our hospital. Based on the pathological examination the patients were divided into three groups: myxomas group (n = 126), benign nonmyxomas group (n = 7), and malignant tumor group (n = 5). One hundred and twenty patients (8.7%) were followed up. Results: The hospital mortality rate was 1.6% (2/126) in myxomas group. Totally 108 patients with myxomas were followed up for 5 months to 10 years. The recurrent rate was 5.6% (6/108). The long-term death rate was 2.8% (3/108). All the 7 patients with benign nonmyxomas were followed up for 5 months to 10 years. No postoperative or long - term death was observed. Two patients died in malignant tumor group, and the other 3 patients died of tumor recurrence at 6, 11, and 22 months after surgery, respectively. Conclusion: Surgical resection is the first choice in the treatment of primary cardiac tumors. The clinical outcomes are closely related to the pathological classification of cardiac tumors. Early diagnosis and aggressive surgical therapy are important.
