Abstract:Sophora davidii (Franch.) Skeels, an indigenous legume, plays a crucial role in vegetation restoration in the water-catchment regions of Danjiangkou reservoir, which has in recent time experienced increasing drought-associated soil salinity and vegetation deterioration. The utilization of this species has been hampered by low rates of germination and emergence due to hard seed coats. Eleven treatments including concentrated sulphuric acid, hot water, sandpaper, and GA(3) were tested for ability to break seed dormancy in S. davidii. Immersion in concentrated sulphuric acid (98%) for 30 min increased seed germination and seedling emergence most efficiently and is particularly suited for simultaneously treating large numbers of small seeds as required in seedling cultivation projects.
