Abstract:In 1964, Erdős proposed the problem of estimating the Turán number of the d-dimensional hypercube . Since is a bipartite graph with maximum degree d, it follows from results of Füredi and Alon, Krivelevich, Sudakov that . A recent general result of Sudakov and Tomon implies the slightly stronger bound . We obtain the first power-improvement for this old problem by showing that . This answers a question of Liu. Moreover, our techniques give a power improvement for a larger class of graphs than cubes. We use a similar method to prove that any n-vertex, properly edge-coloured graph without a rainbow cycle has at most edges, improving the previous best bound of by Tomon. Furthermore, we show that any properly edge-coloured n-vertex graph with edges contains a cycle which is almost rainbow: that is, almost all edges in it have a unique colour. This latter result is tight.

Abstract:For a family of k-graphs F, the Turán number T(n,F) is the maximum number of edges in a k-graph of order n that does not contain any member of F. The Turán density t(F)=limn→∞T(n,F)/nk. Let K4 be the tetrahedron that is the complete triple graph of order four. Let the triple graph Fp,q defined on the vertex set P∪Q with |P|=p and |Q|=q consist of those edges which intersect P in either one or three vertices. Let V={1,2,3,4,5} and let F5 be defined on V with E(F5)={123,145,245}. Let F5c denote the complement of F5, and let P5 be the weak pentagon obtained from F5 by adding the edge 134 and let C5 be the pentagon obtained from P5 by adding one more edge 235. We prove that•1/2≤t(F1,4)≤2/3,•23−3≤t(K4,F5c)≤2−2,•1/4≤t(F1,4,P5)≤62−8,•2/9≤t(F1,3,F3,2,C5)≤1/11. The first result relates to a conjecture of Mubayi and Markström–Talbot that t(F1,3)=2/7. The best known bounds are 2/7≤t(F1,3)<0.32908. The second result relates to an old conjecture of Turán that t(K4)=5/9. The best bounds are 5/9≤t(K4)≤(3+17)/12. The last two results relate to a result of Mubayi and Rödl that t(F1,3,C5)≤10/31.

Abstract:Let the crown $C_{13}$ be the linear $3$-graph on $9$ vertices $\{a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i\}$ with edges $$E = \{\{a,b,c\}, \{a, d,e\}, \{b, f, g\}, \{c, h,i\}\}.$$ Proving a conjecture of Gyárfás et. al., we show that for any crown-free linear $3$-graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, its number of edges satisfy $$\lvert E(G) \rvert \leq \frac{3(n - s)}{2}$$ where $s$ is the number of vertices in $G$ with degree at least $6$. This result, combined with previous work, essentially completes the determination of linear Turán number for linear $3$-graphs with at most $4$ edges.

Abstract:The planar Turán number of a graph H , denoted by , is the maximum number of edges in a planar graph on n vertices without containing H as a subgraph. This notion was introduced by Dowden in 2016 and has attracted quite some attention since then; those work mainly focus on finding when H is a cycle or Theta graph or H has maximum degree at least four. In this paper, we first completely determine the exact values of when H is a cubic graph. We then prove that for all , and obtain the lower bounds of for all . Finally, we also completely determine the exact values of for all and .

Abstract:We show that there is a constant c such that any 3‐uniform hypergraph H with n vertices and at least cn5/2 edges contains a triangulation of the real projective plane as a subgraph. This resolves a conjecture of Kupavskii, Polyanskii, Tomon and Zakharov. Furthermore, our work, combined with prior results, asymptotically determines the Turán number of all surfaces.

Abstract:For positive integers n and r , we consider n -vertex graphs with the maximum number of r -edge-colorings with no copy of a triangle where exactly two colors appear. We prove that, if 2≤r≤26 and n is sufficiently large, the maximum is attained by the bipartite Turán graph T2(n) on n vertices. This is best possible, as T2(n) is not extremal for r≥27 colors and n≥3 .

Abstract:Klein and Randic (1985) proposed the concept of forcing number, which has an application in chemical resonance theory. Let $G$ be a graph with a perfect matching $M$. The forcing number of $M$ is the smallest cardinality of a subset of $M$ that is contained only in one perfect matching $M$. The maximum forcing number of $G$ is the maximum value of forcing numbers over all perfect matchings of $G$. Kleinerman (2006) obtained that the maximum forcing number of $2n\times 2m$ quadriculated torus is $nm$. By improving Kleinerman's approach, we obtain the maximum forcing numbers of all 4-regular quadriculated graphs on torus except one class.

Abstract:Planar Turán number ex_𝒫(n,H) of H is the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex planar graph which does not contain H as a subgraph. Ghosh, Győri, Paulos and Xiao initiated the topic of the planar Turán number for double stars. In this paper, we prove that ex_𝒫(n,S_2,4)≤31/14n for n≥ 1, and show that equality holds for infinitely many integers n.

Abstract:The planar Turán number ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)$ is the largest number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph with no cycle of length $k$. Let $k\ge 11$ and $C,D$ be constants. Cranston, Lidický, Liu and Shantanam \cite{2021Planar}, and independently Lan and Song \cite{LanSong} showed that ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)\ge 3n-6-\frac{Cn}{k}$ for large $n$. Moreover, Cranston et al. conjectured that ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)\le 3n-6-\frac{Dn}{k^{lg_23}}$ when $n$ is large. In this note, we prove that ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)\ge 3n-6-\frac{6\cdot 3^{lg_23}n}{k^{lg_23}}$ for every $k$. It implies Cranston et al.'s conjecture is essentially best possible.

Abstract:In 2010, Nikiforov conjectured that for l≥2 and n sufficiently large, Sn,l−11 is the unique graph with the maximum spectral radius over all n -vertex C2l -free graphs. In 2022, Cioabǎ, Desai and Tait solved this conjecture. The theta graph Θt,l consists of two vertices joined by t vertex-disjoint paths, each of length l . Particularly, Θ2,l≅C2l . In this paper, we characterize the unique extremal graph which attains the maximum spectral radius among all Θt,l -free graphs of order n , where t,l≥3 and n is sufficiently large.

Abstract:Let $\cal H$ be a family of graphs. The Turán number ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ is the maximum possible number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which does not contain any member of $\cal H$ as a subgraph. As a common generalization of Turán's theorem and Erdős-Gallai theorem on the Turán number of matchings, Alon and Frankl determined ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for ${\cal H}=\{K_r,M_k\}$, where $M_k$ is a matching of size $k$. Replacing $M_k$ by $P_k$, Katona and Xiao obtained the Turán number of ${\cal H}=\{K_r,P_k\}$ for $r \leq \lfloor k/2 \rfloor$ and sufficiently large $n$. In addition, they proposed a conjecture for the case of $r \geq \lfloor k/2 \rfloor+1$ and sufficiently large $n$. Motivated by the fact that the result for ${\rm ex}(n,P_k)$ can be deduced from the one for ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal C}_{\geq k})$, we investigate the Turán number of ${\cal H}=\{K_r, {\cal C}_{\geq k}\}$ in this paper. Namely, for such $\cal H$, we are able to show the value of ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for $r \geq \lfloor (k-1)/2\rfloor+2$ and all $n$. As an application of this result, we confirm Katona and Xiao's conjecture in a stronger form. For $r \leq \lfloor (k-1)/2\rfloor+1$, we manage to show the value of ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for sufficiently large $n$.

A new lower bound for the multicolor Ramsey number $r_k(K_{2, t + 1})$

Abstract:In this short note, we provide a new infinite family of $K_{2, t+1}$-free graphs for each prime power $t$. Using these graphs, we show that it is possible to partition the edges of $K_n$ into parts, such that each part is isomorphic to our $K_{2, t+1}$-free graph. This yields an improved lower bound to the multicolor Ramsey number $r_k(K_{2, t+1})$ when $k$ and $t$ are powers of the same prime. For these values of $k$ and $t$, our coloring implies that $$ tk^2 + 1 \leq r_k(K_{2, t+1}) \leq tk^2 + k + 2. $$ where the upper bound is due to Chung and Graham.

Ghosh, et al. initiated the topic of double stars and prove that exP(n, S2,5) <= 207 n. In this paper, we continue to study this and give a better upper bound exP(n, S2,5) <= 197 n - 18 7 for all n >= 1, with equality when n = 12. This improves Ghosh's result. (c) 2024 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In the present paper, we introduce a new approach and use it to prove that the maximum number of triangles in a C5-free graph on n vertices is at most 126(1+o(1))n3/2, improving an estimate of Ergemlidze and Methuku [4]. We also show that the maximum size of an induced-C4-free and C5-free graph on n vertices is at most 16(1+o(1))n3/2, also improving an estimate of Ergemlidze and Methuku [4].
Tight bounds for intersection-reverse sequences, edge-ordered graphs and applications

Abstract:In 2006, Marcus and Tardos proved that if $A^1,\dots,A^n$ are cyclic orders on some subsets of a set of $n$ symbols such that the common elements of any two distinct orders $A^i$ and $A^j$ appear in reversed cyclic order in $A^i$ and $A^j$, then $\sum_{i} |A^i|=O(n^{3/2}\log n)$. This result is tight up to the logarithmic factor and has since become an important tool in Discrete Geometry. We improve this to the optimal bound $O(n^{3/2})$. In fact, we show that if $A^1,\dots,A^n$ are linear orders on some subsets of a set of $n$ symbols such that no three symbols appear in the same order in any two distinct linear orders, then $\sum_{i} |A^i|=O(n^{3/2})$. Using this result, we resolve several open problems in Discrete Geometry and Extremal Graph Theory as follows. We prove that every $n$-vertex topological graph that does not contain a self-crossing four-cycle has $O(n^{3/2})$ edges. This resolves a problem of Marcus and Tardos from 2006. We also show that $n$ pseudo-circles in the plane can be cut into $O(n^{3/2})$ pseudo-segments, which, in turn, implies new bounds on point-circle incidences and on other geometric problems. Moreover, we prove that the edge-ordered Turán number of the four-cycle $C_4^{1243}$ is $\Theta(n^{3/2})$. This answers a question of Gerbner, Methuku, Nagy, Pálvölgyi, Tardos and Vizer. Using different methods, we determine the largest possible extremal number that an edge-ordered forest of order chromatic number two can have. Kucheriya and Tardos showed that every such graph has extremal number at most $n2^{O(\sqrt{\log n})}$, and conjectured that this can be improved to $n(\log n)^{O(1)}$. We disprove their conjecture by showing that for every $C>0$, there exists an edge-ordered tree of order chromatic number two whose extremal number is $\Omega(n 2^{C\sqrt{\log n}})$.
