Abstract:The Deep Waterway Project with double jetties and groins in the North Passage of the Yangtze estuary is a huge project for deepening the navigation channel from 7 m (in 1998) to 12.5 m (before 2010). The environmental impact of this project has been a concern since the beginning. This study mainly focuses on the effects of the project on the hydrodynamics and salt-water intrusion in the estuary. A set of nested 3D hydrodynamic (and transport) models for the Yangtze estuary, based on the Delft3D-FLOW, is applied in the study. The jetties and groins are represented in the model as Current Deflection Walls which can allow the water to flow over when the water level is higher than the top of the jetties and groins. The computed hydrodynamics and salinities at different stages of the project show substantial differences indicating that the project has significant effects. The division ratio of ebb flux in the North passage is reduced by about 10%; the flow pattern between the double jetties is changed from rotation flows to to-and-fro flows; the ebb flow along the channel is increased; the salinity distributions show that salt-water intrusion is enhanced. The reasons of these changes are analyzed in this paper. The results of this study can be used as basis for studying the effect of the project on sediment transport in the Yangtze estuary in the near future.
