Abstract:Advances in development of vapor phase selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde were reviewed. The advantages and shortcomings of the catalysis, including supported vanadium oxide, vanadium-based composite oxides, vanadium-containing zeolites, molybdenum-based composite oxides and other metal composite oxides, were described. The vanadium-based or molybdenum-based composite oxides catalysts would be spot lighted in future production of benzaldehyde because of their high activities and stabilities. The reaction mechanisms were also noticed. The selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde is attributed to nucleophilic oxygenous species on surface of the oxide catalyst, while the complete oxidation of toluene to carbon oxides related to electrophilic oxygenous species. Moreover, strong attention must be paid to membrane reactor used in the selective oxidation in which breaking up of the equilibrium constraint can be realized to improve the toluene conversion.
