Abstract:The purpose of this study is to determine if the intermittent leg muscular strength and bicycle ergometry exercise training could attenuate cardiovascular deconditioning induced by prolonged -6° head-down bed rest (HDBR). Fifteen male subjects were allocated into group A (n=5, 30d HDBR without exercise training), group B (n=5, 30d HDBR with leg muscular strength exercise training) and group C (n=5, 30d HDBR with bicycle ergometry exercise training). The orthostatic tolerance of the subject was determined by +75°/20min head-up tilt test and maximal exercise capacity was determined by bicycle ergometry test before and after HDBR. The results were as follows: (1) Compared with that before HDBR, orthostatic tolerance time decreased dramatically by 57.6%(P<0.05)after HDBR in group A, while it decreased by 36.4% and 34.7% (0.05<P<0.10) in group B and C respectively. (2) Compared with that before HDBR, the maximal exercise time decreased significantly by 17.7% and 21.1% (P<0.05) in group A and B after HDBR. However, it had almost no change, even a little raise in group C (+1.3%, P>0.77) . (3) Compared with that before HDBR during orthostatic test and exercise test, the fluctuation of heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) were slightly smaller in group B and C than that in group A. The results indicated that leg muscular strength and bicycle ergometry exercise training could attenuate to some extend the cardiovascular deconditioning induced by 30d HDBR, and the latter training method was relatively more effective.
