Abstract:We report on a self-organizing, quasi-stable regime of laser proton acceleration, producing 1 GeV nano-Coulomb proton bunches from laser foil interaction at an intensity of 7*10^21 W/cm2. The results are obtained from 2D PIC simulations, using circular polarized light normally incident on a planar, 500 nm thick hydrogen foil with Gaussian transverse profile. While foil plasma driven in the wings of the driving pulse is dispersed, a stable central clump with 1 - 2 lamda diameter is forming on the axis. The stabilisation is related to laser light having passed the transparent parts of the foil in the wing region and encompassing the still opaque central clump. This feature is observed consistently in 2D and 3D simulations. It depends on a laser pulse shape with high contrast ratio.

Abstract:We report on a self-organizing, quasistable regime of laser proton acceleration, producing 1 GeV nanocoulomb proton bunches from laser foil interaction at an intensity of 7 x 10;{21} W/cm;{2}. Abstract:The acceleration of protons from the interaction of two intersecting laser pulses in a double-layer target, consisting of a carbon slab with a thin hydrogen layer behind it, is investigated. It is found that a bunch of well-collimated, up to 270 MeV, quasi-monoenergetic protons can be generated. The affected target electrons are heated and accelerated forward by the laser pulses so that the target gradually becomes transparent as the lasers bore into it. Eventually, the thin target becomes fully transparent. The converging laser pulses can then pass through it and the hot backside electron cloud, together with the electrons trapped in them. As a result, behind the target, an inhomogeneous sheath electric field is formed, which not only accelerates the protons but also merges them into a quasi-monoenergetic bunch with low divergence. The energy and spatial spread of the bunch, as well as the peak energy, can be controlled by manipulating the locations of the two lasers. Published under license by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:When an intense Gaussian laser pulse (I > 1021 W/cm2) with circular polarization (CP) is incident on a planar thin foil, the foil is curved and is transformed into a "cocoon". Rayleigh-Taylor like instabilities develop much more slowly as the radiation pressure is increased, so that these instabilities can disperse nearly the whole cocoon into low density plasma cloud and only a clump (with a size about 1~2lambda) is left in the center of the target. As long as the laser gradually penetrates into the plasma cloud, the photon cavity can be formed and the laser pulse begins to embrace the clump. As the central clump is focused and pushed by the photon cavity (the three-dimensional beam compression), a monoenergetic and highly collimated proton beam is realized. As the photon cavity is helpful to realize the stable acceleration of GeV proton beams with a very low energy spread, so that nearly GeV monoenergetic and collimated proton beam can be generated, which is identified by 2D and 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations.

Abstract:A scheme for significantly enhancing the beam quality of laser-driven proton acceleration is proposed and investigated with particle-in-cell simulation: two linearly polarized Gaussian laser pulses obliquely irradiate a double-layer target that acquires a periodic surface structure that reduces the reflection, improves the focusing, and enhances the energy coupling of the third, or main, laser pulse that follows. The oblique pulses also provide some initial kinetic energy to the initially static target electrons and thus protons, which is very crucial for efficient acceleration. As a result, a proton beam of 1.15 GeV peak energy, very low energy spread ∼4%, and small divergence angle ∼5° can be obtained with laser intensities of 1021 W cm−2, which is significantly lower than that of the other recently proposed schemes.

Abstract:Neutron beams are unique tools to probe samples in many fields, such as biology medicine and fusion research. Access to such sources is traditionally limited to large particle accelerators. However, laserdriven pulsed neutron sources have attracted attention in recent years due to their compactness and cost savings. Although, in practical applications, the major obstacle is terribly low neutron flux due to the isotropic scattering. Here we propose a roadmap for laser-driven neutron sources based on "kinematic focusing," which is ideal for producing highly collimated neutron beams and leads to the neutron-flux enhancement by more than 1 order of magnitude. Such a good collimation is conducive to the detection of samples located several meters from neutron sources, and it becomes feasible to place sensitive detectors adjacent to the neutron sources without the necessity of heavy shielding. A theoretical model for kinematic focusing and supporting two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are presented. It is shown that a wellcollimated neutron beam, with the maximal divergence angle of about 30 degrees, is generated by bombardment of a hydrogen target with Li3+ beams, which come from a metallic lithium foil irradiated by a short laser pulse at an intensity of 5.5 x 1020 W cm-2. This proposed method can be achieved by present-day petawatt laser facilities.

Abstract:Recently, there has been some works on surface plasma waves excited by a laser obliquely irradiating on a thin foil target, which can cause stronger target normal sheath acceleration of protons but cannot be excited by a grazing incidence laser. Here, we demonstrate that a large amplitude Interface Plasma Wave (IPW) can be excited by a relativistic laser pulse irradiating parallel (or grazing incidence) to the interface of a solid aluminum and low density hydrogen layer. This IPW markedly enhances the sheath electric field to accelerate protons and reduce reflection of the laser pulse to improve the coupling efficiency. As a result, a collimated high energetic and lower energy spread proton beam can be efficiently achieved.

Abstract:An ultra-intense short-pulsed laser interacting with a uniform underdense plasma with near-critical density is investigated by 2.5-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. It is found that a collimated proton beam with maximum energy up to the GeV was generated. The corresponding proton acceleration mechanism is analyzed. The laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) electrons play an important role as a driving beam. Due to the features of LWFA electrons, quasi-monoenergetic distribution and good collimation, the protons can be accelerated for a long distance by the charge-separated electric field. The proton beam in this regime is also well collimated and the amount can reach several nC. Moreover, it is found that the LWFA electrons can overtake the laser and stand quasi-synchronized in the center of pulse. Therefore the electrons can absorb energy from the laser and transfer it to the protons like in the break-out afterburner (BOA) scheme in laser irradiated on ultra-thin film target.

Abstract:Proton acceleration by ultra-intense laser pulse irradiating a target with cross-section smaller than the laser spot size and connected to a parabolic density channel is investigated. The target splits the laser into two parallel propagating parts, which snowplow the back-side plasma electrons along their paths, creating two adjacent parallel wakes and an intense return current in the gap between them. The radiation-pressure pre-accelerated target protons trapped in the wake fields now undergo acceleration as well as collimation by the quasistatic wake electrostatic and magnetic fields. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation shows that stable long-distance acceleration can be realized, and a 30 fs monoenergetic ion beam of > 10 GeV peak energy and < 2degree divergence can be produced by a 9.8 *10^21 W/cm2 circularly polarized laser pulse.

Abstract:In the laser foil-plasma interaction the effects of Weibel-like instability have been explored. The self-induced magnetic fields result in the merging of filaments formed at the earlier stage of the instability and subsequent formation of a plasma clump close to the laser propagation axis. A photon cavity is formed in the laser plasma interactions, which can accelerate and focus the proton bunch efficiently, as identified by multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations. These processes are helpful to realize the stable acceleration of hundreds of MeV proton beams with a very low energy spread with circularly polarized intense laser pulses. Abstract:We have investigated proton acceleration in the forward direction from a near-critical density hydrogen gas jet target irradiated by a high intensity (10^18 W/cm^2), short-pulse (5 ps) laser with wavelength of 1.054 micron. We observe the signature of shock acceleration driven by the laser pulse, leading to monoenergetic proton beams with small divergence in addition to the commonly used electron-sheath driven proton acceleration. The proton energies we obtained are modest (~MeV), but prospects for improvement are offered through tailoring the gas jet density profile. Also, we observe that this mechanism is very robust in producing those beams and thus can be considered as a future candidate in laser-driven ion sources driven by the upcoming next generation of multi-PW near-infrared lasers.

Abstract:Ultrashort 10(22)-10(24) W/cm(2) laser pulses will offer the possibility of producing monoenergetic electron beams in the GeV-TeV level in the future. A laser-electron acceleration scheme is proposed by the interaction between a thin solid foil and an ultra-intense laser pulse for alpha(0) >= 800 sigma(0), where alpha(0) is the normalized laser field and sigma(0) is the normalized plasma surface density. The energy of the electrons as a function of time can be described by a simple model which indicates that an exponential relationship exists between the energy and the normalized time tau. A quasi-monoenergetic high density electron beam with 1.3 GeV energy and a 2.2% energy spread has been predicted for alpha(0) = 223.5 by particle-in-cell simulations. Characteristics of the ultra-high density electron layer formed in the early period of the acceleration are discussed.

Abstract:High-energy proton beams with low energy spread and angular divergence are highly valuable in various applications, such as proton therapy, ultrafast science, and nuclear physics. Laser-driven ion sources are being explored as a more compact and cost-effective alternative to conventional accelerators. However, producing high-quality proton beams using lasers has been a significant challenge. In this study, we propose a novel approach to achieve high-energy quasi-monoenergetic proton beams by utilizing a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser to irradiate a solid hollow tube target. Our three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate that the LG laser efficiently pulls out and accelerates electrons. As these electrons exit the rear side of the tube, a charge-separation electric field for proton acceleration is self-established. Meanwhile, a considerable part of the electrons are confined to the laser axis by the ponderomotive force of the LG laser, generating a longitudinal bunching field and transverse focusing field. As a result, protons are accelerated and focused in these fields, producing a high- quality proton beam with high energy (247 MeV) and low energy spread (& SIM;2%) using an LG laser with an intensity of 1.9x1021 W cm-2 and a tube target with an electron density of 40nc . In comparison to a standard Gaussian laser, the LG laser exhibits superior performance in terms of proton cut-off energy, energy spread, and angular divergence.

Abstract:A complex target (CT) configuration tailored for generating high quality proton bunch by circularly polarized laser pulses at intensities of 1020-21 W/cm2 is proposed. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that both the collimation and mono-energetic qualities of the accelerated proton bunch obtained using a front-shaped thin foil can be greatly enhanced by the backside inhomogeneous plasma layer. The main mechanisms for improving the accelerated protons are identified and discussed. These include stabilization of the photon cavity, providing hole-boring supplementary acceleration and suppressing the thermal-electron effects. A theory for tailoring the CT parameters is also presented.

Abstract:Focal spot effects on the generation of proton beams are investigated by a high-intensity high-contrast laser irradiating on solid foil in target normal sheath acceleration experiments. Different spot size, transverse shape, and intensity of the laser are obtained by appropriately using deformable mirrors and parabolic mirrors. Experiments show that the maximum proton energy is mainly determined by the laser intensity if the focal spot size is not seriously changed. Compared with the previous experimental results, the optimum foil thickness d(o) is scaled by the laser intensity I as d(o) similar to I-0.33. The corresponding theoretical estimation is carried out as d(o) similar to I-0.25 for ultra-high intensity laser systems with similar contrast. MULTI and particle-in-cell simulations are used to interpret the experimental results.

Abstract:CO2 laser-driven electron acceleration in low-density plasma is demonstrated using particle-in-cell simulation. An intense CO2 laser pulse of long wavelength excites a wake bubble that has a large elongated volume for accelerating a large number of electrons before reaching the charge saturation limit. A transversely injected laser pulse is used to induce and control the electron injection. It is found that an electron bunch with total charge up to 10 nC and absolute energy spread less than 16 MeV can be obtained. As a result, the charge per energy interval of the bunch reaches up to 0.6 nC/MeV. Intense CO2-laser based electron acceleration can provide a new direction for generating highly charged electron bunches with low energy spread, which is of much current interest, especially for table-top X-ray generation.

Abstract:It is proposed that guided and collimated proton acceleration by intense lasers can be achieved using an advanced target—a thin foil followed by a hollow plasma channel. For the advanced target, the laser-accelerated hot electrons can be confined in the hollow channel at the foil rear side, which leads to the formation of transversely localized, Gaussian-distributed sheath electric field and resultantly guiding of proton acceleration. Further, due to the hot electron flow along the channel wall, a strong focusing transverse electric field is induced, taking the place of the original defocusing one driven by hot electron pressure in the case of a purely thin foil target, which results in collimation of proton beams. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that collimated proton beams with energy about 20 MeV and nearly half-reduced divergence of 26° are produced at laser intensities 1020 W/cm2 by using the advanced target.

Abstract:We report an autofocused, enhanced proton acceleration by the interaction of an intense laser pulse with a bulged target. These results are obtained from two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations using a real Gaussian laser pulse, normally incident on a bulged/planar, 60 nm thick foil (C:H=1:1). When the laser pulse hits the precurved target, energetic protons are converged on the axis automatically. For the bulged foil, due to oblique incidence at the wing region, the efficient vacuum heating at larger incidence angles will result in more energetic hot electrons than from the flat foil. The enhancement of hot electron temperature and density will result in a larger longitudinal field, which contributes to an enhancement of proton energy. The maximum proton energy of 124 MeV is attained from a bulged target irradiated by a linear polarized laser pulse at an intensity of 1.3×1020 W/cm2, which is two times higher than from the planar target (61 MeV).

Abstract:Acceleration of ions from ultrathin foils irradiated by intense circularly polarized laser pulses is investigated using a one-dimensional particle-in-cell code. As a circularly polarized laser wave heats the electrons much less efficiently than the wave of linear polarization, the ion can be synchronously accelerated and bunched by the electrostatic field, thus a monoenergetic and high intensity proton beam can be generated.

Abstract:The production of GeVelectron beam with narrow energy spread and high brightness is investigated using particle-in-cell simulations. A controlled electron injection scheme and a method for phase-space manipulation in a laser plasma accelerator are found to be essential. The injection is triggered by the evolution of two copropagating laser pulses near a sharp vacuum-plasma transition. The collection volume is well confined and the injected bunch is isolated in phase space. By tuning the parameters of the laser pulses, the parameters of the injected electron bunch, such as the bunch length, energy spread, emittance and charge, can be adjusted. Manipulating the phase-space rotation with the rephasing technique, the injected electron bunch can be accelerated to GeV level while keeping relative energy spread below 0.5% and transverse emittance below 1.0 mu m. The results present a very promising way to drive coherent x-ray sources.
