Abstract:Colorectal polyps could be divided into inflammatory polyps, hyperplastic polyps, serrated polyps, adenomatous polyps, and hamartomatous polyposis syndromes. Some types of polyps, for example, adenomatous polyps have the potential to become cancerous. Most people with colorectal polyps do not have symptoms. It takes many years for a polyp to become cancerous. Colonoscopy is the best way to evaluate colorectal polyps because it allows the physician to observe the entire lining of the colon and remove any polyps found. Repeat colonoscopy is recommended after the removal of polyps, and the time interval depends upon several factors including the endoscopic characteristics of polyps and number and size of polyps. On the other hand, although a number of studies have demonstrated the potential chemopreventive effects of aspirin and other non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitors, high calcium diet and bioactive food components, but many challenges still remain.
