Abstract:Knowledge-based engineering (KBE) and finite element analysis (FEA) have been used widely in the study of metal forming. However, the acquisition of knowledge has created a bottleneck in the building of the KBE knowledge base. To properly understand the results of FEA and choose the appropriate design, a lot of knowledge and experience is needed. FEA generates massive data, in which large amounts of useful knowledge is hidden. Thus, knowledge acquisition from databases is likely to ease the above difficulties; as such, we apply knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) technology. In this paper, the characteristics of FEA data are discussed. Then, a framework of knowledge discovery from FEA data is proposed. Correspondingly, a data mining algorithm called the fuzzy-rough algorithm is developed to deal with the FEA simulation data by combining fuzzy set theory and rough set theory. Finally, a square cup part stamping process and an extrusion forging process are studied as examples. The proposed knowledge discovery process is applied to obtain some useful, implicit and efficient production rules. The results illustrate the value of knowledge discovery from FEA simulation data.
