Abstract:It is well known that the packing of particles in concrete has great effects on the performance of concrete, but codified methods for measuring packing density are all carried out under dry condition, which tends to result in loose packing due to agglomeration of the fine particles. Nevertheless, a wet packing method has been developed recently to enable more accurate measurement of packing density. In this study, this wet packing method was extended to measure the packing density of the concrete mix of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). Furthermore, three groups of concrete mixes with various aggregate proportions and W/C ratios were produced for compression tests. It was found that at given W/C ratio and age, the compressive strength, elastic modulus, toughness and specific toughness of RAC would increase with increasing packing density, indicating that the packing density is a key factor affecting the compressive behaviour of RAC. Hence, packing density optimization is a promising way of improving the performance of RAC.

Abstract:Concrete is taken as a two-phase composite material consisting of mortar matrix and aggregate on mesoscopic level in the following discussion on a numerical simulation approach for dealing with polygonal aggregate distributions in concrete. Aggregate particles of various sizes were first generated for a given aggregate gradation curve and aggregate area fraction, and then distributed in a concrete intersection using Monte Carlo technique. Simulated results show that the generated aggregate patterns are very similar to the patterns of practical aggregate distributions.

Abstract:Concrete is a very complex material with a variety of inhomogeneities. Its overall mechanical response depends on the material properties of different composites. Furthermore, the inside configuration of concrete has significant influence on the crack initiation and damage evolution. In this sense, a mesoscale model which treats concrete as a heterogeneous material provides a powerful approach to study concrete deeply. The main work of this paper is to develop a method of generating 3-D numerical model which resembles real concrete in mesoscale. In this model, the concrete is regarded as a three-phase system consisting of coarse aggregate, mortar matrix and interfacial zones between them. The aggregate particles are supposed to have random polyhedral shapes which resemble crushed rocks. A packing algorithm applicable to polyhedrons is advanced to modify the distribution and compactness of aggregate.

Abstract:Particle packing model are always utilized to investigate and predict micro structure performance of material. On one hand, considering 3 classical packing methods, it’s found that random packing method for model of resin concrete is the most suitable. 3D Particle packing model on Matlab is realized through compiling programs, then converted into Ansys and study on porosity of it proves the correctness of the packing model. On the other hand, different from others’ applying Walraven J.C Equation with a quite limited applicability to getting slice, this paper proposes that slice directly from the 3D model is more accurate and scientific, which is also managed to realize on both Matlab and Ansys.

Abstract:For existing robotic assembly studies in construction, the axis-aligned bounding box algorithm used is not capable enough to provide the exact approximation of rotated and irregularly-shaped structural components' volumetric extents. This could lead to mistakenly assumed collisions. This research bridges the gap by developing a robotic approach that can mathematically derive polyhedron-bounded boxes that provide a more accurate approximation of rotated and irregularly-shaped structural components' volumetric extents for collision checks. In the approach, structural components' polyhedron meshes are represented by vertexes and normal in the algebraic format and are compared in real time to identify touching faces. Testing of the approach reveals that it has satisfactory collision avoidance performance, where its generated outputs can be used to control the joints of a robotic manipulator for detouring obstacles. The strength of our approach is in exploiting entities' polyhedral features, where the constraints for testing collisions are set with objects' exact boundaries.

Abstract:The modeling of the concrete matrix serves as a foundation for mesoscale analysis of concrete, which provides a crucial avenue for investigating the crack propagation and strength characteristics of concrete. However, the primary prerequisite for conducting such analyses is the generation of aggregate models. By combining the advantages of Voronoi diagrams and the random walk algorithm (RWA), a Voronoi–random walk algorithm is proposed in this paper. The algorithm overcomes the limitations of traditional methods, including constraints on aggregate volume fraction, low computational efficiency, and insufficient randomness in aggregate distribution. The meso-structure of a concrete block was modeled by the proposed method, and then its failure behavior under uniaxial compression was simulated using the finite element method. The numerical results agreed well with the experimental observations, indicating the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach.

Abstract:A novel two dimensional irregular parts packing method using particle swarm optimization is presented. Firstly, the proposed method convert the problem of two dimensional irregular parts packing into rectangular parts packing problem by calculating the surrounding rectangle of irregular parts. Secondly, the particle swarm optimization algorithm was used to search for the optimal solution of the layout. The strategy of self-adaptive modulation is used to adjust the layout position of each rectangular part during the procedure of optimization. The solutions of two numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical strategy for realistic modelling of the internal material configuration and cracking of concrete on mesoscale. Polyhedron shapes resembling crushed rocks are adopted to represent the aggregate. A packing approach in which the particles are heaped up layer by layer is proposed for 3-D condition. A cubic representative volume element (RVE) is generated using the method. The cohesive approach, in which zero thickness cohesive elements are inserted into the ordinary finite element mesh along the potential cracking path, is adopted to model the cracking developing process. The cracking behaviours of created RVE under uniaxial tension are well simulated using the current approach.

Abstract:A 3-D numerical model was developed for micro-scale concrete strength analysis using an algorithm for random 3-D aggregate packing. Aggregate location conflicts and overlaps were eliminated with conflicting and overlapping criteria in the algorithm. Growth pattern and convexity conditions were analyzed for a convex polyhedron aggregate. Each aggregate grew from a random spatial octahedron and always maintained a convex shape during the growth and packing processes. The convex polyhedron aggregate model more accurately simulates the concrete material structure than the spherical aggregate model. Numerical tests show that the 3-D random aggregate model provides sufficiently accurate results for concrete inhomogeneity studies.

Abstract:This paper aims at developing a numerical algorithm for the chloride diffusivity of concrete containing spheroidal aggregates. In the algorithm, spheroidal aggregates of various sizes are generated for a given sieve curve and placed into a cubic simulation element. The mesostructure of concrete is reconstructed by surrounding each aggregate with an interfacial transition zone (ITZ). To increase the computational efficiency, an equivalent aggregate model (EAM) is built and the equivalent ITZ thickness and chloride diffusivity are derived analytically. The chloride diffusivity of concrete is estimated with the random walk algorithm. Finally, the validity of the numerical algorithm is verified with the experimental results obtained in this paper and collected from the literature and the effect of aggregate aspect ratio on the chloride diffusivity is evaluated quantitatively.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel algorithm for optimal packing problem by combining ant colony algorithm with BLF (bottom-left-fill) heuristic approach. The proposed algorithm not only automatically looks for the best sequence of the polygons and each polygon's optimum rotation by ant colony algorithm but also implements the exact layout with the BLF heuristic algorithm. Moreover, the algorithm supports the parallel computation and facilitates quick convergence to the optimal solution. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our algorithm comparing with the other methods.

Abstract:Generating random aggregate models (RAMs) plays a key role in the mesoscopic modelling of concrete-like composite materials. The arbitrary geometry, wide gradation, and high volume ratio of aggregates pose a great challenge for fast and efficient numerical construction of concrete meso-structures. This paper presents a simple strategy for generating RAMs of concrete based on Laguerre tessellation, which mainly consists of three steps: tessellation, geometric smoothing, and scaling. The computer-assisted design (CAD) file of RAMs obtained by the proposed approach can be directly adopted for the construction of random numerical concrete samples. Combined with the image-based octree meshing algorithm, the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) was adopted for an automatic stress analysis of mass concrete samples, and a parametric study was conducted to investigate the meso-structural effects on concrete elasticity properties. The modelling results successfully reproduced the increasing trend of concrete elastic modulus with the grading of coarse aggregates in literature test data and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Abstract:The internal structure of composite materials is usually composed of a continuous matrix with dispersed particles. To simulate the spatial distribution of particles, the random sequential addition algorithm (RSA) is commonly used. The RSA using continuous geometric function is difficult to achieve a high packing density in allowable computer time and time-consuming in the case of irregularly shaped aggregates, such as in mortar and concrete systems. In this work, a geometrical model, named as VOX, is introduced to deal with 3D irregularly shaped particles. The model applies the voxel-based overlap determination in the RSA to improve the efficiency and packing density. Also, the model is applicable to the complex boundary conditions of any geometry and provides high-quality triangle meshes valuable for finite element analysis. The mortar and concrete cubes with real-shape particles are simulated, in which the packing density is increased to 65% and 51%, respectively. The VOX model successfully packs over 150,000 real-shape aggregates into the steel cage in a full-size reinforced concrete beam model on a desktop machine. Particle shape significantly affects the packing density in the RSA and the sphericity is recommended as an indicator. The particles with higher sphericity can achieve denser packing under the same effort of attempts. Real-shape gravel used in this study behaves similarly with regular octahedron because of the similar sphericity.

Abstract:In view of the importance of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) to the macro-properties of concrete, it is essential to determine the ITZ area fraction in concrete. Once the ITZ area fraction is known, the physico-mechanical properties of concrete can be predicted based on the three-phase composite model. The intention of the present paper is to develop a numerical algorithm for the ITZ area fraction in concrete with elliptical aggregate particles. By introducing a contact function for two ellipses, the elliptical aggregate particles with various sizes are distributed within a square element with periodic boundary conditions. The Monte Carlo method is then adopted to evaluate the ITZ area fraction. After verifying the developed numerical algorithm with the analytical solution for the ITZ area fraction in concrete with circular aggregate particles, the effects of key factors that affect the ITZ area fraction are examined in a quantitative manner. It is found in the paper that the ITZ area fraction increases with the increase of the ITZ thickness, but decreases with the increase of the maximum aggregate diameter and the ratio between the major and minor axes of elliptical aggregate particles. It is also found that the aggregate gradation has a significant influence on the ITZ area fraction. The paper concludes that the numerical algorithm presented in the paper can predict the ITZ area fraction with reasonable accuracy.

Abstract:To efficiently solve the problem of two-dimensional irregular polygon packing in actual production, a heuristic algorithm driven by design knowledge was proposed. No Fit Polygon（NFP） was used to judge the relative positions between irregular polygons, and a mathematical model of local fitness was established to measure the fitting degree of irregular polygons. Then, a mathematical model driven by design knowledge was established to evaluate the position of irregular polygons to be placed. A greedy algorithm based on local search strategy was used to complete the packing. The experimental testing of international common benchmark cases and comparison with existing intelligent optimization algorithms proved that the proposed algorithm had certain advantages in layout quality and time performance with high stability. Besides, the experimental test of the sample data in actual production proved that the proposed algorithm had the value of being applied to actual production applications.

Abstract: The distribution of random convex aggregates in a twodimensional field is the basis for strength analysis of concrete structures. The concrete was analyzed as a twophase system consisting of the coarse aggregate and the mortar matrix with dissolved fine aggregate. A numerical model was developed to simulate the random aggregate structure. Conflict or overlap in the packing process were removed with conflict and overlap criteria based on an area index. The power of the random aggregate structure for solving heterogeneous problems is then illustrated by numerical examples. Experimental results show that compared with other methods, the developed method with convex aggregate is easier to be used in 3D problems.

Abstract:The chloride diffusivity of concrete is an important parameter for assessing the long-term durability of coastal concrete structures. The purpose of this paper is to present a three-dimensional random walk algorithm (RWA) for estimating the chloride diffusivity of concrete. By analyzing the size distribution of aggregates, the equivalent interfacial transition zone (ITZ) thickness is derived in an analytical manner. Each aggregate is combined with the surrounding ITZ to construct an equivalent aggregate model (EAM) and the chloride diffusivity is formulated. It is found that the equivalent ITZ thickness decreases with the increase of practical ITZ thickness and aggregate volume fraction. The aggregate gradation influences the equivalent ITZ thickness to a certain extent. The relative chloride diffusivity of the equivalent aggregate is almost directly and inversely proportional to the equivalent ITZ thickness and the aggregate radius, respectively. The numerical results show that, when the EAM is adopted, the computational time is greatly reduced. With the EAM, concrete can be modeled as a two-phase material and the chloride diffusivity is estimated by applying the RWA. It is shown that, with the increase of mean square displacement and number of Brownian particles, the average chloride diffusivity of concrete approaches a stable value. Finally, through comparison with experimental data, the validation of the RWA is preliminarily verified.

Abstract:In the preparation stage of the discrete element method(DEM) simulation and the coupling of the FEM and the DEM,it is essential to generate a high-density granular assembly in a relatively short time with no overlapping in a specified region to simulate practical granular material.With a combination of geometry and physics,this paper puts forward a particle moving model for packing in 3D region.The model generates the first layer particles on the bottom of the container with the constructive method.Two different methods are adopted to calculate the moving direction of the subsequent particles according to their different contacting condition.If the particle collides with the container boundary,the direction is calculated according to the physical elastic collision theory.If the particle collides with another particle,the direction is calculated with a purely geometrical method,that is,the cross product of the particle's two consecutive contact normal vectors determines the particle's next direction,and the direction is made to have a downward trend.The model ensures that the particle contacts with different objects within three consecutive contacts,and that its final stable position converges quickly on three supporting target and satisfies the physical condition of the stationary particles.The contact detection between particles is based on the regularly partitioned grid cell in the packing area.According to the position and the moving direction of the particle,the algorithm makes full use of the characteristics of the particle moving model to search for the particles to collide in the grid cells of the grid rows at different grid levels.The experiment results show that the time to create the granular particles set is linear with the particle number and this process is completed in a comparatively short time with high-density particles set.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of two dimensional irregular parts packing, a new optimal packing algorithm was proposed.In order to enhance the operation speed of the algorithm,the algorithm to calculate the least surrounding boxes was improved.In order to enhance the global convergence performance of the algorithm,the selection operator was improved by using elitist preservation strategy.In order to enhance the precision of the algorithm,the decoding algorithm was improved by using the Height Adjustment algorithm.Solutions of the numerical example showed the effectiveness of the algorithm.
