Abstract:Human physiological parameter might be a valuable objective index to evaluate thermal comfort. Some studies indicated that mean skin temperature was closely related to thermal sensation and thermal comfort. Additionally, the measurement and calculation of mean skin temperature is simple. Thus, the usefulness of mean skin temperature in evaluation of thermal comfort was discussed.22 subjects' local skin temperatures were measured under air temperatures of 21 degrees C, 24 degrees C, 26 degrees C, and 29 degrees C, and mean skin temperatures were calculated using a formula with ten skin measuring sites. And also, their thermal comfort levels and thermal sensation were investigated with questionnaire. The Mahalanobis distance discrimination is applied to establish the evaluation model for thermal comfort using mean skin temperature.Subjects' feelings of thermal comfort and mean skin temperatures under each air temperature were analyzed. The result indicated that the difference in mean skin temperatures at comfort and discomfort level was significant. Using the evaluation model, a scale of mean skin temperature (32.6 similar to 33.7 degrees C) associated with thermal comfort level was obtained, and 72% of the subjects' thermal comfort levels were correctly evaluated. When the effect of gender on thermal comfort and mean skin temperature was considered, accuracy of the evaluation model increased. It can be concluded that mean skin temperature can be used as an effective physiological indicator to evaluate human thermal comfort under steady thermal environment.
