Abstract:With emerging applications in packet-transport networks such as IP-over-WDM networks (e.g., eBanking), packets need to be delivered within a bounded delay (i.e., given deadlines) with high probability. To satisfy such requirement, we propose an Inbuilt-Burstification Urgency-driven Scheduling (iBUS) Algorithm in IP-over-WDM networks. In this approach, packets are assembled into bursts according to their destinations by a preset timer. The timing burstification can reduce the amount of contentions, and support deadline constraints. Then all assembled bursts need to be scheduled efficiently with the deadline constraint. We introduce the concept of urgency degree as a scheduling metric. Bursts are scheduled according to their urgency degrees so that utilization of available network resources can be maximized under the constraint of deadlines. We also study a high-level variant of our algorithm, beta-iBUS, where the parameter beta is used to truncate the acceptable range of urgency degrees [0, 1] into [0, beta] (where beta les 1) so that invalid scheduling caused by high urgency degrees can be minimized. Simulation experiments demonstrate that our proposal can achieve limited loss probabilities with the constraint of bounded delay.

Abstract:The iBUS (inbuilt Burstification Urgency-driven Scheduling) algorithm delivers packets in IP-over-WDM networks in an "accurate" and "timely" manner. It employs a flexible assembly process which can interact effectively with the urgency-driven process of the iBUS algorithm. In this letter, a hop-constraint timing assembly approach is proposed, where input packets are classified by their routing hops. Then, input packets whose routing hops are more than a threshold are assembled into multi-hop bursts. Multi-hop bursts have higher priority to be scheduled by their urgency degrees, and limited-hop packets (without assembly) can be filled in voids between multi-hop bursts. This approach gives freedom to the urgency-driven process to facilitate iBUS in IP-over-WDM networks.
A Scheduling-Aware Burst Assembly Algorithm for Bandwidth-Guaranteed and Delay-Bounded Services in IP-over-WDM Networks

Abstract:We propose a scheduling-aware burst assembly algorithm to provide bandwidth-guaranteed and delay-bounded services for IP packets in IP-over-WDM networks. To transport IP packets efficiently over a network, they are assembled into bursts, and delivered within a given deadline. All IP packets in a burst should satisfy the deadline requirement, and, in turn, all assembled bursts are guaranteed to be served. To achieve this goal, the assembly and the scheduling processes of each burst need to be performed concurrently within the same active time-window (called joint window). The joint window size is set considering the deadlines of packets in a burst so that each of them (and, in turn, the burst itself) can satisfy its deadline. To guarantee service-availability for each assembled burst, the scheduling information (e.g., when and how long a slot is free for a burst) is fed back to the burst assembly process in each joint window. This scheduling information is used to determine when and how long an assembly process will be conducted. Those packets, which can not make the deadline, are not considered for the burst assembly process. Although, in our algorithm, the packets are transmitted in a burst (as described above), we investigate the packet-level performance for a IP-over-WDM network. The simulation experiments demonstrate that our algorithm can achieve low packet loss probabilities, and guarantee the delay-bound for delivered packets (loss probability and delay-bound are key factors for emerging IP services).

Abstract:The IEEE 802.1Qbv standard provides deterministic delay and low jitter guarantee for time-critical communication using a precomputed cyclic transmission schedule. Computing such transmission schedule requires routing the flows first, which significantly affects the quality of the schedule. So far off-the-shelf algorithms like load-balanced routing, which minimize the maximum scheduled traffic load (MSTL), have been used to accommodate more time-triggered traffic. However, they do not consider that the bandwidth utilization of periodic flows is decentralized and their criteria for bottleneck of scheduling are imprecise. In this paper, we firstly explore the combinability among different periods of flows, which can measure their ability to share bandwidth without conflict. Then, we propose a novel period-aware routing algorithm to reduce the scheduling bottleneck, thus more flows can be accommodated. The experiment results show that the success rate of scheduling is significantly improved compared to shortest path routing and load balanced routing.

Abstract:Edge computing is a novel computing paradigm that offers kinds of resources at the network edge. In edge computing, terminal users are connected to edge servers via the wireless network and there are various channels in each wireless link. These wireless channels are limited resource while different channel has different cost and service ability. The dynamic changes of users’ status make it harder to find an appropriate method to satisfy the BPM requirements of channel deployment. With this observation, it is a tricky challenge to make a trade-off between the system cost(rental price) and the service ability(number of users). In view of this challenge, an intelligent resource scheduling method, named EdgeIRS, is proposed in this paper. In the technical sense, the EdgeIRS method can accommodate most users at the edge with a minimum cost of deploying channel resources in an online way. Its performance is analyzed theoretically and the experiments verify the superiority of the method.

Abstract:The integration of ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) and IEEE 802.16 has been lately presented as a promising candidate for next-generation broadband access. This paper investigates the performance of the integrated carrier when specific service bundles (SBs) with bandwidth guarantee and diverse quality of service requirements are provisioned. We first present a novel framework that fairly distributes the upstream network capacity among the different SBs. We then propose a novel delay-based admission control scheme to increase the network utilization and enable an inter-SB statistical multiplexing. To obtain the expected delay of each SB stream, a generic analytical model is developed. Based on this model, we further formulate some important performance measures such as queuing delay, end-to-end (from wireless user to the central office of PON) delay, average queue size and optimal orthogonal frequency division multiplexing frame length. Numerical results validate our analysis and highlight the advantages of the proposed solution.

Abstract:With the wide expansion of voice services over the IP networks (VoIP), the volume of this delay sensitive traffic is steadily growing. The current packet schedulers for IP networks meet the delay constraint of VoIP traffic by simply assigning its packets the highest priority. This technique is acceptable as long as the amount of VoIP traffic is relatively very small compared to other non-voice traffic. With the notable expansion of VoIP applications, however. the current packet schedulers will significantly sacrifice the fairness deserved by the non-voice traffic. In this paper, we extend the conventional Deficit Round-Robin (DRR) scheduler by including a packet classifier. a Token Bucket and a resource reservation scheme and propose an integrated packet scheduler architecture for the growing VoIP traffic. We demonstrate through both theoretical analysis and extensive simulation that the new architecture makes it possible for us to significantly improve the fairness to non-voice traffic while still meeting the tight delay requirement of VoIP applications.

Abstract:In this article, we briefly present the design and software architecture of an IP/ATM multiple sub-network router. We establish queue model of the IP process module and propose a traffic-based scheduling mechanism (AICS: Adaptive Incomplete Cyclic Service), on the basis of our prior work. We also provide a simulation study on the system throughput and packet delay jitter performance for both AICS mechanism and IICS mechanism proposed in prior work. Simulation results show that, comparing with IICS, AICS can provide much better packet delay jitter performance when high speed sub-networks exist bursty traffic and give better fairness.

Abstract:The explosion of Internet traffic calls for quality of service (QoS)-guaranteed packet transmission in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with high energy and bandwidth efficiency. Conventional routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms focus on circuit switching, which does not well meet this requirement due to the bursty nature of IP traffic. Based on a novel traffic matrix decomposition technique, we study the joint design of traffic scheduling and routing in a reconfigurable WDM optical network to improve energy and bandwidth efficiency. Specifically, every node in the network is equipped with a set of parallel tunable lasers, each with a reconfiguration overhead. A dynamic matrix is adopted to model the traffic among the nodes and is decomposed into a set of transmission configurations (i.e., traffic scheduling). The configurations are then fulfilled by tuning the parallel lasers and routing the scheduled traffic under the topology constraint, to achieve loss-free packet transmissions with bounded delay (i.e., QoS guarantee). We reveal that a tradeoff exists between the packet delay and the required number of tunable lasers. The latter is then minimized under a given packet delay to save energy. As far as we know, this is the first work to adopt traffic matrix decomposition in WDM networks to save energy. The proposed framework is validated by extensive simulation studies.

Abstract:Distributed control system plays an important part in the application of satellite systems. However, there are integrated requirements (i.e., reliability, real-time capability, expandability, commonality, usability, economy and efficiency) for communication in these systems often used in hostile environments. The work presented here relates to a protocol named IRCBus (Industry High-Reliability Configurable Bus), which supports these requirements. And it also offers practical solutions. First of all, the protocol is formulated based on ISO/OSI (International Organization Standardization /Open System Interconnection) model and it includes four layers: Physical, DataLink, Network and Transport. And it proposes new ideas and improved methods in each layer draft and realization for these requirements. Then the high reliability is guaranteed by hot backup, three redundancy, bus isolation, retransmission law, data check and intrinsically safe explosion-proof; the real-time capability is realized by hardware system based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) and software system; the expandability for bus functions and network size is considered during the whole design; the usability is solved by system management function, installing law and uninstalling law; the low cost are achieved as follows: adopting common cable as transmission media; utilizing existing chip RS485 chip with rational circuit; the efficiency is improved by taking advantage of 8-bit data and 9-bit data in UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) protocol and other features. Moreover, it analyzes the protocol from communication principle perspectives. Group Scheduling Based on Control-Packet Batch Processing in Optical Burst Switched Networks

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is proposed as a high-speed, flexible, and transparent technology. It is thought to be the best way to adapt the bursty IP traffic over optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. OBS technology facilitates the efficient integration of both IP and WDM. It provides statistical multiplexing gains and avoids long end to end setup time of traditional virtual circuit configuration. However, there are still a lot of challenges, one of which is burst contention. Owing to the fact that random access memory like buffering is not available in the optical domain at present, there exists a real possibility that bursts may contend with one another at a switching node. Many contention resolutions are proposed. The major contention resolutions in literature are wavelength conversion, fiber delay lines, and deflecting routing. In this paper, a new data burst scheduling scheme, called group scheduling based on control-packet batch processing (GSCBP) was proposed to reduce burst contention. Like transmission control protocol, GSCBP has a batch processing window. Control packets which located in the batch processing window are batch processed. A heuristic scheduling algorithm arranges the relevant bursts' route based on the processing result and the network resource. A new node architecture supporting group scheduling was presented. The GSCBP algorithm is combined with wavelength converter and/or fiber delay lines which is shared by some data channels. Meanwhile, an extended open shortest path first (E-OSPF) routing strategy was proposed for OBS. Both GSCBP and E-OSPF are introduced into 14-node national science foundation network by means of simulations. The ETE delay, burst blocking probability, as well as burst dropping probability were attained. Results show that the GSBCP lead to the higher-priority traffic drop rate decrease one order of magnitude, if drop rate and ETE delay of lower priority traffic is sacrificed.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a unified TDMA-based scheduling protocol for Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications. In the proposed TDMA-based scheduling protocol, the roadside infrastructure collects the information from the vehicles within its communication coverage through a control channel at the beginning of each transmission frame and then decides how to allocate the time slots to the vehicles for their data transmission requests based on a new designed weight-factor-based scheduler. The provided weight factor jointly takes into consideration the channel quality of communication links, the speed based fairness among vehicles, and different access categories. Simulation results verify the efficiency of the proposed scheduling protocol in terms of the network throughput performance, the fairness among the vehicles, and different accessing priorities of different access categories.
DS-PPS: A Practical Framework to Guarantee Differentiated QoS in Terabit Routers with Parallel Packet Switch

Abstract:Parallel Packet Switch (PPS) is used intensively in today's terabit router to construct the switching fabric. Basic PPS equally deals with all of the traffic in order to achieve uniform load-balancing and high throughput, but it fails to support differentiated QoS. With the recent blooming of delay-sensitive Internet traffic, such as the peer-to-peer live streaming and IPTV, differentiated QoS is becoming an urgent demand. In this paper, we propose a novel and practical framework, the Differentiated Service Parallel Packet Switch (DS-PPS), which supports three fundamental QoS features: guaranteed-delay (GD), guaranteed-bandwidth (GB) and best-effort (BE). By adaptively adjusting the number of switching planes offered to each QoS class, DS-PPS precisely controls the delay bounds of GD traffic and the drop precedence of GB traffic. We evaluate DS-PPS by extensive theoretical analyses and comprehensive simulations. Experimental results on a prototype implementation of the framework show that DS-PPS outperforms the basic PPS in three main aspects. First, the average delay of TCP short packet under full load is reduced by more than 94%. Second, the average delay of real-time traffic under full load is reduced by more than 82%. And third, the GB traffic of low drop precedence is guaranteed of nearly three times the throughput of high drop precedence at the hotspots. Significantly, our proposed DS-PPS framework is universal and scalable to support various kinds of emerging QoS-sensitive applications in multi-service terabit routers without any extra overhead.
Packetized Smooth Switching for Buffered Crossbar Switches

Abstract:A sort of CICQ switches called the smoothed buffered crossbar or sBUX based on a new rate-based flow control scheme has been proposed in order to induce more scalability and predictability. However, sBUX supports fixed-length cells only, and the synchronization of input scheduling and output scheduling is required. In this paper, a new rate-based CICQ switch called sBUX+, which uses a novel packetized smoothed scheduler s-WF 2 Q as input and output schedulers, is proposed. It can support variable-length packet switching without fragmentation. In sBUX+, the buffer occupancy in the crosspoint is bounded by three packets with the longest length. The most appealing property of sBUX+ is the bounded packet departing time when supporting guaranteed services.

Abstract:IP over WDM networks has been receiving much attention as a promising approach to building the next generation Internet since it can reduce complexities and overheads associated with the ATM and SONET layers. Provision of quality of service (QoS) is one important topic in next generation Internet. An optical burst switching scheme to support basic QoS at the WDM layer, the offset-time-based QoS scheme, was proposed by Yoo, Qiao and Dixit (2000, 2001) (YQD scheme). In this paper, we propose a union bound method to estimate the loss probability for different priority services, which is an extension of the bounds given by Yoo, Qiao and Dixit. It is proved that the proposed union bound is tighter than that given by Yoo, Qiao and Dixit. Meanwhile, based on the conservation law, we also present a method to estimate the required maximum delay length of fiber delay lines (FDLs) if FDL buffers are employed in the YQD scheme in IP over wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. Some numerical results on the effect of fiber delay lines on the system performance and the required maximum delay length of FDLs for different service classes are presented.

Abstract:To have a better network usage in IP (Internet protocol) over WDM (Wavelength division multiplexing) networks, it is important to take into account the combined topology and resource usage information at the IP and optical layers, i.e, for an arriving request, there should be a scheme to determine whether it is better to route it over the existing topology or to open new wavelength paths. Moreover, lightpath length should be considered in many cases especially for different QoS (Quality of service) applications and traffic engineering. To solve these issues, this paper develops an integrated dynamic length-constrained routing algorithm based on transforming-graph. As the proposed routing scheme makes full use of the statistic information of the users' bandwidth requirement and considers carefully both the IP and optical layers' information, thus reduces greatly the bandwidth fragment which can not be used by any other subsequent requests, i.e, an improved network resource usage. Simulation results show that the developed scheme performs very well in terms of performance metrics such as the number of rejected requests and the network average blocking probability.
Routing Algorithms for Multi-Service IP Transmissions over DWDM Networks

Abstract:A bandwidth reservation-based priority scheme (BRPS) and a restricted path-based priority scheme (RPPS) were developed to support multi-service transmissions in IP over dense wavelength division multiplexing networks. The BRPS provides good quality of service for high priority traffic by reserving part of the bandwidth for virtual links. The RPPS provides service differentiation by offering different numbers of restricted paths for traffic with different priorities. Discrete event simulations show that, compared to the wavelength reservation-based priority scheme, The BPRS has a lower blocking probability for low traffic loads. The RPPS has a lower average blocking probability than the BRPS when the network traffic load is above 800 Erlangs. In addition, the blocking probability of the RPPS can be adjusted dynamically by changing the number of restricted paths. Thus, the RPPS has a very powerful capability to provide service differentiation.

Abstract:Using buffered crossbar as a core switch fabric, we build a combined input-crosspoint-output queued switch with space-division multiplexing expansion (denoted as SDM CICOQ switch) in this paper. It is proved that an SDM CICOQ switch with an expansion factor 2 can achieve 100% throughput and exactly emulate an OQ switch. Thus, SDM CICOQ switches can provide QoS guarantees for traffic flows. For the simplicity of implementation, we also present a hierarchical priority scheduling (HPS) scheme as a reference designing for the scheduling policy of the SDM CICOQ switch. Simulation results show that the SDM CICOQ switch operating under the HPS scheduling scheme can obtain good performance.

Abstract:The hybrid types of traffic containing traditional data and multimedia streams are delivered in networks. Besides the Best Effort service, Internet has to supply other different services to various types of traffic with multiple priorities. DiffServ architecture is considered to be the promising Internet framework meeting QoS requirements. One of crucial elements in DiffServ is its network node scheme. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme which combines dynamic buffer management with active queue management to assist routers in provisioning loss differentiated services. In order to support several levels of different traffic classes, we extend a dynamic threshold buffer management method in the case of multiple loss priorities. We detail the implementation of the scheme on routers. Simulation results confirmed that our scheme is able to adapt to load changing conditions and offer different guarantees for hybrid traffic flows in terms of their loss priorities.
