Abstract:In practical engineering applications, electromagnetic analysis of stratified dielectric objects, such as radomes, heat insulated material, etc is highly desirable. In this paper, as improvement of the full current TDS approximation, a multilayer TDS approximation method is proposed. This approximation leads to surface integral instead of the volume integral, and consequently reduce unknowns by only surface meshes being utilized to discretize the dielectric geometry. The TDS approximation and the normal continuity condition of D flux result in considerable saving in computing cost. The TDS approbation describes the volume polarization currents as multi-layer current sheets, each of which retains constant in the normal direction.

Abstract:To solve scattering from a perfect electric conductor (PEC) with multi-thin-layer dielectric coatings, the multi-layer thin dielectric sheet (TDS) approximation is often used. In order to minimize inaccuracies in the determination of normal current distribution, the modified multi-layer TDS approximation is proposed in the paper. Normal unknowns, which differ from that in conventional multi-layer TDS, are redefined. Moreover, the explicit PEC boundary condition is employed with a minor modification. By using the modified approach, the thickness of the dielectric can be up to 0.3λ (λ is the dielectric wavelength). The improvement enables us to tackle a wider range of problems. A numerical example is given showing the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:Thin dielectric sheet (TDS) approximation and electromagnetic (EM) boundary conditions are considered together to derive out a set of integral equations as an alternative to the impedance boundary condition (IBC) method to solve the electromagnetic scattering from thin dielectric-coated conductors. Only with discretizing the induce current on the conductor surfaces and solving an integral equation similar to that for a perfect electric conductor (PEC), the scattering fields from the whole coating system (electric or magnetic material coating) are computed. Both the electric field integral equation (EFIE), magnetic field integral equation (MFIE) and their combination form are presented. These equations are converted to a matrix equation by Galerkin's method and then solved with multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) to obtain the far fields scattering from these coated objects.

Abstract:An improved scheme of the multilayer thin dielectric sheet (ML-TDS) approximation is proposed in this letter to analyze scattering from electrically large dielectric sheets. Benefiting from a more effective expression for normal components of the volume current than that in the original ML-TDS model, the maximum thickness of solvable dielectric sheets is increased from 0.2 dielectric wavelength to at least 0.35 dielectric wavelength, without decreasing the solution accuracy and increasing the unknowns. Moreover, the phase extracted (PE) basis functions are first introduced to express the volume current in the dielectric sheet, and the number of unknowns is reduced dramatically. Compared to the original ML-TDS model using traditional basis functions, the improved approach can be applied to analyze the sheets with a much larger (lateral) size and thickness. Numerical examples demonstrate the good accuracy and much higher efficiency of the proposed solution.

Abstract:A multilevel Green's function interpolation method based on two kinds of multilevel partitioning schemes--the quasi-2D and the hybrid partitioning scheme--is proposed for analyzing electromagnetic scattering from objects comprising both conducting and dielectric parts. The problem is formulated using the surface integral equation for homogeneous dielectric and conducting bodies. A quasi-2D multilevel partitioning scheme is devised to improve the efficiency of the Green's function interpolation. In contrast to previous multilevel partitioning schemes, noncubic groups are introduced to discretize the whole EM structure in this quasi-2D multilevel partitioning scheme. Based on the detailed analysis of the dimension of the group in this partitioning scheme, a hybrid quasi-2D/3D multilevel partitioning scheme is proposed to effectively handle objects with fine local structures. Selection criteria for some key parameters relating to the interpolation technique are given. The proposed algorithm is ideal for the solution of problems involving objects such as missiles, microstrip antenna arrays, photonic bandgap structures, etc. Numerical examples are presented to show that CPU time is between O(N) and O(N log N) while the computer memory requirement is O(N).

Abstract:This paper introduces a new method for analyzing the scattering from combined conductor-dielectric bodies based on equivalent principle algorithm (EPA). The object is decomposed into several different parts. In each part, it can be an inhomogeneous dielectric or a perfect electric conductor (PEC) of arbitrary shape. Equivalent surfaces (ES) are built for the interactions between each parts. And the current translation from the object to ES can be accelerated by the transformed multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA). Numerical result demonstrates the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:To speed up solution of electromagnetic scattering from 3-D conducting structures coated by thin dielectric material, the multilevel fast multipole algorithm and successive overrelaxation iterative technique are applied into the thin dielectric sheet (TDS) model. Based on the TDS model, only the induced current density on the surface of the conducting structure is required. By adding unitary operator for unknown current on both sides of the electric field integral equation, a successive overrelaxation iteration is constructed. The total computational expense is reduced greatly while reasonable accuracy is maintained. Numerical results demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the present method.

Abstract:A new hybrid finite-difference time-domain and mixed-potential integral equation method (hybrid FDTD-MPIE) is developed for the modeling of multilayer planar structures with locally inhomogeneous objects. By using equivalence principle, the original problem can be decomposed into external and internal problems. The FDTD method is applied to solve the internal problem, which contains the locally inhomogeneous dielectric objects. Conversely, the frequency domain MPIE method is employed to address the external problem of the global multilayered planar structure. The FDTD model and the MPIE model are coupled together by enforcing the continuity of tangential fields on the equivalent surface. Both the direct and iterative method are demonstrated in this paper to solve the integral-differential problem. In addition, the DCIM method is applied to improve the computational efficiency. Numerical results are presented to validate the proposed hybrid FDTD-MPIE method.

Abstract:In this paper, the multi-layer TDS (thin dielectric sheet) integral equation approach is first proposed. This method divides the geometric model into multiple thin layers and assumes the flux density to be constant with respect to the normal direction within each layer. Consequently, the number of unknowns is significantly reduced while the precision of the results could be maintained. Then, the multi-layer TDS integral approach is combined with the PEC (perfect electric conductor) boundary conditions together to handle scattering from dielectric coated PEC objects. This new procedure simplifies the coupled surface (for the conductor)-volume (for dielectric) integral to a surface-surface integral with much fewer unknowns. Furthermore, a remedy approach is also presented in this paper to improve the deteriorated precision for open composed structures due to the significant singular currents near the boundary edges. Compared with traditional PEC-TDS methods, the method presented in this paper can deal with scattering from thick or stratified coatings with arbitrarily lateral or normal inhomogeneity. Its improvement is also capable of handling dielectric coatings on open PEC surfaces. The numerical results at the end show good agreement with the references, showing the accuracy and the validity of these solutions.

Abstract:A stable scheme of the time domain integral equation (TDIE) methods for transient scattering problems by 3D composite metallic and dielectric objects is developed The formulations are deducted by using induced equivalent surface polarization and magnetization as unknown quantities. The time domain electric field integral equation is adopted for conducting part, while the time domain Piggio-Miller-Chang-Harrington-Wu equations are adopted for dielectric part. The Rao-Wilton-Glisson (RWG) triangular spatial basis functions and quadratic 13-spline temporal basis functions are employed. Numerical examples show that the proposed scheme is stable and accurate. The results are found in good agreements with moment method solutions.

Abstract:In this letter, an electric field integral equation (EFIE)-PMCHWT-based domain decomposition method (DDM) is proposed to solve the scattering from complex multilayer dielectric/metallic composite objects. Existing integral equation-based DDMs take combined field integral equations as subdomain governing equations. Hence, they are not suitable for modeling composite multilayer dielectric with open surfaces because of its poor accuracy. To overcome this limitation, the proposed DDM takes EFIE-PMCHWT as the governing equation for subdomains. The transmission conditions are enforced on the touching-face of neighboring subdomains to ensure the continuity of fields. Compared to the connecting-region-model method, the proposed DDM has a better convergence property because of its locally diagonal-dominant system matrix.

Abstract:In this paper, the time-domain physical optics (TDPO) method is used to analyze the scattering characteristics of multiply electric large homogeneous dielectric targets. The characteristic matrix theory of the layered medium is applied to calculate the total reflection coefficient of the layered medium. Thus the conventional TDPO is extended to analyze the multilayered homogeneous dielectric objects. Numerical results validate the feasibility of this method. It states that the method proposed in this paper has much higher computational efficiency, compared with the commercial electromagnetic software.

Abstract:In this communication, a novel domain decomposition method (DDM) based on integral equation is developed for solving scattering problems of very thin, conducting cavity. By imposing equivalent electric and magnetic currents on the aperture, the original problem is transformed into interior and exterior problems. Different from traditional method based on interior-exterior equivalence principle, this work couples the exterior and interior problems only through the transmission condition on the aperture. Based on this DDM, a well-posed combined field integral equation (CFIE) is successfully developed to realize fast solution of electromagnetic scattering from open-ended cavity with extremely thin or zero thickness. Compared to the electric field integral equation, the proposed CFIE significantly improves the convergence rate of iterative solvers. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the validity and advantages of the present method.

Abstract:In this article, a local coupling multitrace domain decomposition method (LCMT-DDM) based on surface integral equation (SIE) formulations is proposed to analyze electromagnetic scattering from multilayered dielectric objects. Different from the traditional SIE-DDM, where the interactions between subdomains are accounted for using global radiation coupling, LCMT-DDM uses a local coupling scheme. The original multilayered object is decomposed into several independent domains, i.e., the exterior region (free space) and many homogeneous interior regions (dielectrics). The boundaries of subdomains are all touching faces, where only the Robin transmission conditions (RTCs) are enforced to ensure the field continuity. Hence, each subdomain only couples with its neighboring regions, which makes the DDM system a highly sparse matrix, especially when the number of subdomains is large. In each subdomain, the electric-field integral equation (EFIE) and the magnetic-field integral equation (MFIE) for dielectrics are used as the governing equations. By imposing RTCs, well-conditioned equations are formed in each subdomain without invoking the combined-field integral equation (CFIE), which usually causes accuracy issues in dielectric modeling. Since the subdomain matrices are diagonally dominant, the flexible generalized minimal residual (FGMRES) technique is used to accelerate the iterative solution of the whole DDM system. Moreover, an effective preconditioner that can be recursively constructed is proposed.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the stability and accuracy of time domain integral equation (TDIE) methods for analysis of transient scattering by 3D dielectric objects. The time domain PMCHW integral equations are adopted with the equivalent surface polarization and magnetization as unknown sources. The RWG spatial basis functions and quadratic B-spline temporal basis functions are employed. Parallel computation is implemented for handling of large-size problems. Numerical examples show that the present approach is stable and accurate.

Abstract:A modified time-domain integral equation (TDIE) method is proposed to calculate the transient electromagnetic scattering by arbitrary conducting objects. The method uses the Hertz potential instead of the magnetic vector potential which has unified forms that can apply to both free-space and layered media such as microstrip structures. Transient scattering from a specific target model and a microstrip line are analyzed using an implicit marching-on-in-time (IMOT) scheme. Numerical results are accurate and late-time instability is not observed.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approximate solution for electromagnetic scattering by planar homogeneous dielectric objects with arbitrary shape. This solution is derived by introducing a semi-empirical formula of the electrical field inside objects under consideration and by exploring the volumetric integral equation along with spectral representation of dyadic Green's function. Afterward, a closed-form approximate solution has also been established by utilizing the so-called stationary phase method (SPM). It is demonstrated that our solution is uniformly valid for planar objects with moderate electrical thickness illuminated from low to high frequencies at all incidence angles. Comparisons with a full-wave computation obtained by the method of moments (MoM) have been examined, which demonstrates that the proposed formulation can provide very accurate results and can perform much better than other existing approximate techniques.

Abstract:In this letter, a hybrid approach combining nonconformal, nonoverlapping domain decomposition method (DDM) and electric/magnetic current combined-field integral equation (JMCFIE) is presented to solve scattering problems of three-dimensional multilayer dielectric objects. The original structure can be decomposed into some closed subdomains according to material distribution, and JMCFIE is formulated in each subdomain. The major ingredients in the proposed approach are the use of the Robin-type transmission conditions (TCs) and nonconformal, nonoverlapping domain partitioning, which remarkably increases the flexibility of mesh discretization and enhances the efficiency of solution. The multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) is also applied to realize fast computation of matrix-vector product. Finally, some numerical results are given to demonstrate the validity of the JMCFIE-DDM-MLFMA.
