Abstract:BACKGROUND: Sponge paste made of polyvinyl alcohol polymer foam has biocompatibility, and properties of hemophagia, imbitition, and wound protection. The poly vinyl fluoride (PVF) sponge made of it has been planned to be used for material of wound hemostasis. OBJECTIVE: To observe the hemostasis effect of PVF sponge. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: Comparison observation was performed at the Department of Pharmacology, Xi'an Jiaotong University College of Medicine from March to May 2009. MATERIALS: The PVF sponge patch and control patch were separately provided by Yangling Daiying Biomedical Group Co., Ltd. and Beijing Yingjia Medical Material Co., Ltd. SD rats, dogs and rabbits were provided by the Laboratory Animal Center of Xi'an Jiaotong University College of Medicine. METHODS: Circled digit oneIn vitro coagulation time: the PVF sponge patch, control patch and gauze were cut into pieces into tubes. 3 mL normal saline was separately put in each tube. The dog femoral artery was exposed and 10 mL blood was collected to each tube. The whole blood coagulation time was recorded. Circled digit twoIn vivo coagulation time: the hemostasis effect was detected by rabbit ear vein rupture, rabbit hepatic bleeding, rat muscle trauma, and rat tail broken. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Blood coagulation time in vitro and in vivo as well as bleeding volume. RESULTS: The coagulation time of PVF sponge in vitro for dogs was significantly lower than sterile gauze; the coagulation time of PVF sponge in vivo for rat muscle trauma, rabbit hepatic bleeding, rabbit ear vein rupture and rat tail broken was significantly lower than sterile gauze. The absorbance representing the amount of bleeding of rat muscle trauma and rabbit hepatic bleeding by PVF sponge was lower than sterile gauze. CONCLUSION: PVF sponge exhibits significant effects of hemostasis and bleeding decrease.
