Abstract:Y2O3-doped Mo secondary emitters were prepared by liquid-liquid doping and solid-solid doping, respectively. The back-scattered scanning observation result indicates that the emitter prepared by liquid-liquid doping has fine microstructure whereas that prepared by solid-solid doping has large grain size. Y2O3-doped Mo emitter with small grain size prepared by liquid-liquid doping exhibits high emission property, i. e., the secondary electron yield can get to 5.24, about 1.7 times that prepared by solid-solid doping. Moreover, Y2O3-doped Mo emitter exhibits the best emission performance among La2O3-doped Mo, Y2O3-doped Mo, Gd2O3-doped Mo and Ce2O3-doped Mo emitters due to the largest penetration depth of primary electrons and escape depth of secondary electrons in this emitter. The secondary emission of the emitter with small grain size can be explained by reflection emission model and transmission emission model, whereas only transmission emission exists in the emitter with large grain size.

Abstract:A new thermionic electron emission material has been studied. The electron emission properties and microstructure of Y-Mo(Mo-Y2O3) wire with content of 3% similar to 5% Y2O3 have been systematically investigated by means of electron tube emission and electron microscope. The results showed that the Y-Mo material has very good electron emission ability, higher emission efficiency and lower operation temperature than those of Th-W cathode, respectively. In addition, Y-Mo cathode electron tube exhibits more stable emission current than that of La-Mo ones.
A Study on La2O3-Y2O3-Mo Secondary Emission Material

Abstract:The substrate molybdenum doped with La2O3, Y2O3 cathode material was made by the powder metallurgy method. The secondary emission coefficients of them aterials were tested. The experimental results show that Mocathodes doped with La2O3,Y2O3 have good secondary emission properties. When the cathodes are activated, the maximal secondary emission coefficients of these cathodes are higher than 2.0 and can meet the practical requirement. The distribution of the rare earth in the interior and at surface of this kind of cathode material before and after emission was studied using Scanning Electronic Microscopic (SEM) and X -Ray Photoelectron Spectrum(XPS). The analysis results show that the rare earth is easy to gather at grain boundaries and the relevant concentration of rare earth on the surface after emission is obviously greater than that before emission .

Abstract:In this paper, Y2O3-Lu2O3 co-doped molybdenum secondary emission material were prepared by spark plasma sintering at 1480 °C for 5 minutes. the penetration depth of the primary electron were studied using Monte Carlo methods. Using first principles calculations based on the density functional theory, the secondary emission mechanism of the cathode were analyzed.

Abstract:La2O3–Mo, Y2O3–Mo, Gd2O3–Mo and Ce2O3–Mo were prepared by liquid–liquid doping combined with spark plasma sintering. The microstructure and surface behaviour of rare earth oxide of the cathode have been studied by microscope, Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) methods. Among these four kinds of cathode, Y2O3–Mo cathode exhibits the best secondary emission property, i.e., the maximum secondary emission yield could reach 5.24. The penetration depth of primary electrons and escape depth of secondary electrons have been calculated and the energy distribution of primary electrons in the cathode has been simulated by Monte Carlo method. Y2O3–Mo cathode has the largest penetration depth and escape depth, which could be attributed to the highest secondary electron emission yield of the cathode.

Abstract:The valence of element yttrium of Mo-Y2O3 cathode materials was studied by using thermal weight analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrum. On the basis of experiment results, the emission mechanism of Mo-Y2O3 cathode was discussed. It is proved that yttrium oxide can be reduced by molybdenum carbide. The reaction between Y2O3 powder and Mo2C happens at 1173K. After the powder mixture of Y2O3 and Mo2C is heat-treated at 1873K, yttrium exists in two kinds of chemical state:yttrium of zero valence and yttrium of three valences. The emission of Mo-Y2O3 cathode can be explained by the following mechanism. A monoatomic layer of metallic yttrium at the surface forms and causes the emissivity of the cathode. The film can be created after yttrium oxide reduced to metal yttrium by molybdenum carbide during activating period and operation of the filament, and yttrium subsequently diffuses to the surface mainly along grain boundaries and migrates over the surface. Yttrium at the surface doesn′t give emission current, but the monoatomic active surface layer has a lower work function than clean molybdenum.

Abstract:A new kind of materials La2O3-Gd2O3-Mo has been produced by powder metallurgy method. The com-position and microstructure of the material were studied by XRD and SEM. It shows that no chemical reaction takesplace among La2O3, Gd2O3, Mo and the rare earth oxides exist along molybdenum grain boundaries and in thepores. The emission property measurement results of this material show that adding rare earth oxide into molybde-num can improve the secondary emission coefficient of the emitter, and the emission property depends on the activa-ting temperature. After La2 O3-Gd2 O3-Mo was activated at 1360 ℃, the maximum secondary emission coefficient canbe high to 2.62, which has exceeded that for practical uses(2.0).

Abstract:Y2O3–Mo cermet cathodes were prepared by mechanical mixing of Y2O3 and Mo powder. The prepared cermet cathode provides a certain secondary emission yield (3.09), about 1.8 times lower than that for the cathode prepared by sol–gel method. It was found that the cathode prepared by sol–gel method had a smaller grain size, which could be attributed to its higher emission property. The energy distributions of primary electrons in the cathodes with different grain sizes have been simulated by Monte Carlo method. Based on the calculation results, the emission models of the cathodes are established and presented. The cathodes with different grain sizes exhibited different ways of emission. Two types of emission, of reflection emission and transmission emission, existed in the cathode with small grain sizes whereas only transmission emission existed in the cathode with large grain sizes.

Abstract:Rare earth oxide (REO) doped Molybdenum metal ceramic emitters were successfully prepared by the air Plasma Spray (APS) method. Microstructure and secondary electron emission (SEE) performance were investigated. The relative uniform mixing of rare earth oxide and molybdenum have been observed. The maximum secondary electron yield is 3.3 after activation at 1100b(Mo brightness temperature) in vacuum.

Abstract:The La2O3-MO precursor powder was prepared by the Sol-gel methods and two step reduction. The composition and micrograph of the (2%-5%wt)La2O3-MO materials were tested by the XRD, SEM etc methods. The results show that the rare elements La exist taking the form of La2O3 in the powder and sintering body. The La2O3 particles with granularity of less than 100 nm disperse uniformly in the 2 sintering body. The thermionic emission current at zero field reaches 7.96 A/cm(2) at 1 400 degrees C. After the exposure to the atmosphere the La2O3-MO thermionic emission performance can resume by re-activation at 1 350 degrees C

Abstract:La2O3 and Y2O3 co-doped Mo secondary emitters were prepared by three kinds of doping method combined with high temperature plasma sintering. The secondary electron emission property and microstructure of the cathodes were studied. It showed that the cathode prepared by liquid-liquid doping method exhibited the best emission property among all the samples prepared by liquid-solid doping, solid-solid doping and liquid-liquid doping methods due to a uniform distribution of different substances. RE2O3 existed uniformly at the grain boundaries and diffused to the cathode surface during a cathode activation period. A surface layer of RE2O3 formed after activation played an important role in the emission. The secondary emission yield of La2O3 and Y2O3 co-doped Mo prepared by liquid-liquid doping method was 4.34.

Abstract:A RE2O3-Mo cathode which contains Lu2O3 and Y2O3 with a certain weight ratio was made using a Sol-Gel technique and the spark plasma sintering technique. The maximum secondary emission yield (deltam) of this cathode could reach 4.6 while the activation temperature is only 900degC.

Abstract:Anti-bombing insensitivity of La2O3–Y2O3–Mo secondary emitter has been studied in this paper. The variation of maximum secondary emission coefficient δmax with time was measured. The cathode after life experiment was analyzed by means of HRM, SEM, EDS and XRD. The results showed that δmax of La2O3–Y2O3–Mo cathode operating at 1100°C under continuous electron bombardment of 300W/cm2 was still about 2.5 after 1000h operation, indicating that this kind of cathode had good anti-bombing insensitivity. In the internal part of the cathode, RE2O3 (rare earth oxide) and molybdenum grains distributed alternately and there existed a certain relationship between crystallographic orientation of RE2O3 and that of molybdenum. It was found that a RE2O3 layer was formed on the surface after operation. The high δmax of La2O3–Y2O3–Mo cathode was related to the RE2O3 layer on the surface and the amount of nanosized La2O3 particles on the Y2O3 layer.

Abstract:MOX (M = Fe, Co, Mn, Cr, Lanthanide, or Actinide metals; O = oxygen, X = F, Cl, Br, I), an emerging type of 2D layered materials, have been theoretically predicted to possess unique electronic and magnetic properties. However, 2D MOX have rarely been investigated. Herein, for the first time, ultrathin high‐quality ytterbium oxychloride (YbOCl) single crystals are successfully synthesized via an atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition method. Both theoretical simulations and experimental measurements are utilized to systematically investigate the Raman properties of 2D YbOCl nanosheets. The experimentally observed Eg mode at 85.53 cm−1 and A1g mode at 138.17 cm−1 demonstrate a good match to the results from density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the temperature‐dependent and thickness‐dependent Raman scattering spectra reveal the adjacent layers in YbOCl nanosheets show a relatively weak van der Waals interaction. Additionally, the polarized‐dependent Raman scattering spectra show the intensity of A1g mode exhibits twofold patterns while the intensity of the Eg mode remains constant as the rotation angle changes. These findings could provide the first‐hand experimental information about the 2D YbOCl crystals.

Abstract:Recent experimental thermionic emission characterization measurements of the perovskite oxide SrVO3 demonstrated that low work functions can be achieved with intrinsic surface dipoles on monolithic polar perovskites, while recent density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that many perovskites in addition to SrVO3 may also show low work function. In this investigation, we studied the thermionic emission behavior of another perovskite suggested from DFT, BaMoO3, together with its related physical properties. The temperature limited emission current density increases and then saturates with increasing voltage, consistent with patch field theory. The overall effective work functions are 2.6–2.7 eV, comparable to other thermionic emitters like LaB6, but much higher than the 1.0 eV DFT-predicted lowest work function. We attribute this discrepancy to patch field effects caused by nanoscale features decorating individual surface facets. The resulting heterogeneity yields thermionic emission characteristic of an effective work function higher than the lowest local facet work functions. Additionally, the material shows some instability when operating at high temperatures over 1200°C. Nevertheless, BaMoO3 shows emission behavior comparable to LaB6 when operated at temperatures of , and may find use as a vacuum electron source in vacuum electronic applications such as electron microscopes and electron beam writers.

Abstract:Yttrium oxide was chosen as the secondary emission substance based on calculation results through first principle theory method. A new kind of pressed yttrium oxide-tungsten matrix dispenser cathodes are prepared by a sol gel method combined with high temperature sintering in dry hydrogen atmosphere. The results show that the growth of the grains is hampered by the pinning effect of Y2O3 distributing uniformly between the tungsten particles, resulting in the formation of small grain size. It is found that Y2O3 improves the secondary electron emission property, i.e., the secondary emission yield increases with the increase of Y2O3 content in the samples. The maximum secondary emission yield S. of the cathode with 15% amount of Y2O3 can reach 2.92. Furthermore, the cathode shows a certain thermionic emission performance. The zero field emission current density J(o) of 4.18A/cm(2) has reached at 1050 degrees C-b for this kind of cathode after being activated at 1200 degrees C-b, which are much higher than that of rare earth oxide doped molybdenum (REO-Mo) cathode reported in the previous work. Abstract:A systematic investigation of the fabrication process, microstructure and treatment technology of the Rare earth oxide doped Mo cermet (REO-Mo in brief) on the secondary electron emission (SEE) mainly has been performed. The REO-Mo samples were fabricated by liquid-liquid, Liquid-Solid and Liquid-Liquid doping method and subsequently by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) techniques. It was found that the uniform mixing of REO with Mo would have considerable benefit for enhancement of SEE coefficient (delta). Annealing the cathode in hydrogen (called as the pre-activation treatment) could greatly improve the SEE performance by removing the absorbed water and oxygen at the cathode surface which might cause the oxidation of molybdenum during cathode high temperature operation. It is found that the activation temperature of REO-Mo cathode annealed in hydrogen could decrease to 1000 degrees C, about 300 degrees C lower than that of the cathode without pre-activation treatment, which is favorable for the practical application.

Abstract:Several kinds of tungsten thermonic cathodes have been introduced. As a promising alternative for thoriated tungsten, rare earth doped molybdenum cathode has been studied. Compared with the traditional thoriated tungsten, La-Mo cathode has higher emission current density at lower temperature, but it has poor emission stability. In order to improve the emission stability, systematical study on the emission mechanism of La-Mo cathode has been carried out. The life of La-Mo cathode has been improved and has achieved 1400 h, which exceeds the minimum life for practical uses (1000 h). As another alternative for thoriated tungsten cathode, Y-Mo cathode has shown better performance. The thermionic emission capability of Y-Mo cathode is between that of La-Mo cathode and Th-W cathode.
Enhanced Photoresponse of Epitaxially Grown ZnO by MoO3 Surface Functionalization

Abstract:ZnO has broad applications in optoelectronic devices, including ultraviolet light emitters and photodetectors. Herein we report the impact of MoO3 surface functionalization on the photoresponse of epitaxially grown ZnO. Under illumination with 350 nm UV light, the photocurrent of ZnO is found to be enhanced by 2.87 times after the deposition of 0.2 nm MoO3. As corroborated by in situ ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results, the enhanced photoresponse derives from MoO3 related gap states within the band gap of ZnO and larger upward band bending at the interface, which is attributed to the strong electron transfer from ZnO to MoO3. Moreover, photoluminescence results reveal that the recombination probability of the photo-generated charge carriers in ZnO is reduced after MoO3 surface functionalization.
