Abstract:The dynamic behavior of particles on a bubble interface contains axial and radial motions and is highly dependent upon the energy of this system. By introducing the concept of particle energy density (the average of the system energy based on particle number), four kinds of energy elements are estimated as critical elements, namely surface energy, line tension (an additive interaction at the contact line), electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic interaction (only for hydrophobic particle whose contact angle is greater than 64°). With consideration of different energy influences, the radial motion, vertical to bubble interface, and circumferential motion, parallel with bubble interface, are theoretically described and discussed.
Mesoscopic Modelling Of Microbubble In Liquid With Finite Density Ratio Of Gas To Liquid

Abstract:A microbubble model is developed with the mesoscopic simulation tool, dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) and many-body dissipative particle dynamics (MDPD). Standard DPD particles are employed to represent bubble phase at low density, and MDPD particles are for the liquid phase. The microbubble can be stable in liquid, in contrast to the vacuum bubble model. Gas-liquid interface is well presented with density and pressure jumps. The density ratio of gas to liquid can be lower than 0.1 by increasing the cut-off radius of bubble particles. Oscillating behavior of the microbubble model is investigated and validated by comparing with the Rayleigh-Plesset equation. The current model shows correct dynamic response, and the fluctuating behavior is captured as well. The lower the density ratio of the microbubble model, the closer the oscillating frequency to that of continuum theory. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2018

Abstract:At a gas–liquid interface, there are many unknown physical and chemical phenomena related to thermodynamics, electromagnetics, hydrodynamics, and heat and mass transfer. It is very difficult to understand all these mechanisms in detail; therefore, modeling the gas–liquid interface is one of the key issues in interfacial phenomena of multiphase flows. In our previous study, we developed a new gas–liquid interfacial model based on thermodynamics and a mathematical approach. In that study, we derived a new equation of free energy based on the lattice gas model, including the influence of an electric double layer on the interface caused by contamination. Then, an interfacial jump condition at the gas–liquid interface treated by thermodynamics was derived on the basis of our interfacial model. In this study, we analytically discuss the interfacial interaction on the basis of the thermodynamic jump condition on the macroscopic scale. Finally, we reveal the force vector fields on the gas–liquid interface depending on an electric potential. The result implies that contamination at the interface is very important to interfacial interaction.
Numerical Study of the Collapse of Multiple Bubbles and the Energy Conversion During Bubble Collapse

Abstract:This paper investigates numerically the collapses of both a single cavitation bubble and a cluster consisting of 8 bubbles, concerning mainly on the conversions between different forms of energy. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) with volume of fluid (VOF) method is applied, considering the detailed resolution of the vapor-liquid interfaces. First, for a single bubble near a solid wall, we find that the peak value of the wave energy, or equivalently the energy conversion rate decreases when the distance between the bubble and the wall is reduced. However, for the collapses of multiple bubbles, this relationship between the bubble-wall distance and the conversion rate reverses, implying a distinct physical mechanism. The evolutions of individual bubbles during the collapses of multiple bubbles are examined. We observe that when the bubbles are placed far away from the solid wall, the jetting flows induced by all bubbles point towards the cluster centre, while the focal point shifts towards the solid wall when the cluster is very close to the wall. We note that it is very challenging to consider thermal and acoustic damping mechanisms in the current numerical methods, which might be significant contributions to the energy budget, and we leave it open to the future studies.

Abstract:Modeling gas–liquid interfaces is a key issue in numerical research on multiphase flows. In particular, the mechanism of bubble coalescence/repulsion has not yet been clarified, and thus far, no valid numerical models have been developed. The mechanism may be related to thermodynamics, electromagnetics, hydrodynamics, and heat and mass transfer. Experimental studies have revealed that the concentration of electrolyte dissolved in water and the ion pairs affect bubble coalescence. Contamination such as ions adsorbed at the interface cannot be ignored when considering interfacial interaction. Interfacial effects may be more significant than gravitational effects especially when considering microbubble interactions. Therefore, it is necessary to consider such interfacial effects on microbubble coalescence when developing a gas–liquid interfacial model. In our previous study, we assumed that the interface exists as a thin fluid membrane with finite thickness. Then, we developed a new gas–liquid interfacial model on the basis of thermodynamic and mathematical approaches. In that study, a new governing equation was derived by incorporating the free energy, including the electrostatic potential due to contamination at the interface, into the conventional Navier–Stokes equation on the basis of a multi-scale concept. In the present study, a numerical test was performed for evaluating the surface tension effect of our new interfacial model. Then, the new governing equation was qualitatively evaluated by simulating the interaction between two microbubbles. In the simulation, we investigated microbubble behavior by considering electrostatic potentials of different magnitudes.

Abstract:A modeling of gas-liquid interface is one of key issues of the numerical research on multiphase flows. Especially, a mechanism of bubble coalescence/repulsion is unresolved and there are no valid numerical models. In that study, we have derived a new governing equation with free energy including the effect of the electric double layer caused by a contamination at the interface. In this paper, we applied the new interfacial model to 2-dimensional numerical simulation. Finally, we evaluated the new governing equation qualitatively by simulating a behavior of a single square microbubble and an interaction between two microbubbles including the electrical force.

Abstract:A theory of bubble nuclei at water–solid interfaces is presented based on non-adsorbed interfacial liquid zones (NAILZs). It explains the low-contact-angle of surface nanobubbles observed at clean solid surfaces submerged in purified water from the H–O–H angle of the water molecule. H 2 O molecules that mirror-hydrogen bond to the solid and remaining alien polar molecules create the bubble surface. When plain water is used, non-polar alien molecules prevent the low-angle bubble formation, but not the NAILZ formation. It gives a key to understanding interfacial bubble nuclei generally, surface nanobubbles, as well as cavitation nuclei on natural solid surfaces.

Abstract:The contact angle (CA) of surface nanobubbles is believed to affect the stability of nanobubbles and fluid drag in micro/nanofluidic systems. The CA of nanobubbles is dependent on size and is believed to be affected by the surface charge-induced electrical double layer (EDL). However, neither of these of attributes are well understood. In this paper, by introducing an EDL-induced electrostatic wetting tension, a theoretical model is first established to study the effect of EDLs formed near the solidliquid interface and the liquid-nanobubble interface on the gas phase CA of nanobubbles. The size-dependence of this EDL interaction is studied as well. Next, by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), the effect of the EDL on nanobubbles gas phase CA is studied with variable electrical potential at the solidliquid interface, which is adjusted by an applied voltage. Both the theoretical and the experimental results show that the EDLs formed near the solidliquid interface and the liquid-nanobubble interface lead to a reduction of gas phase CA of the surface nanobubbles because of an electrostatic wetting tension on the nanobubble due to the attractive electrostatic interaction between the liquid and nanobubble within the EDL, which is in the nanobubbles outward direction. An EDL with a larger zeta potential magnitude leads to a larger gas phase CA reduction. Furthermore, the effect of EDL on the nanobubbles gas phase CA shows a significant size-dependence considering the size dependence of the electrostatic wetting tension. The gas phase CA reduction due to the EDL decreases with increasing nanobubble height and increases with the nanobubbles increasing curvature radius, indicating that a surface charge-induced EDL could possibly explain the size dependence of the gas phase CA of nanobubbles.
Characteristics of Bubble Dispersion under Nonuniform Electric Field in an Up-Flow Bubbling System: from Charged Bubble to Charged Bubble Cluster

Abstract:Electric dispersion is a novel and promising method for bubble dispersion. In this study, the laboratory scale bubbling reactor with a nonuniform electric field was established. A high-speed camera was used to observe and investigate the electric dispersion in a nitrogen biodiesel up-flow system. The results showed that dynamic characteristics of the bubble dispersion, including bubble volume, shape, and rising velocity, were strongly correlated with the electric field strength. The bubble could be controllably dispersed into numerous charged bubbles through electric dispersion, with the equivalent diameter decreasing from 1.88 to 0.64 mm. As a result, the charged bubble cluster was obtained with a Gaussian distribution. The number of the charged bubble cluster per cubic meter increased from 5.01 x 105 to 5.40 x 107, which significantly improved the gas-liquid mass transfer area. Moreover, changes in gas and liquid velocities had little effect on the charged bubble cluster. Both the size and number density of the charged bubble cluster could be regulated by adjusting the electric field strength. Additionally, a model was developed to predict the mean size of the charged bubble cluster, with an average relative error of 6.37%. Overall, the results would provide a reference for the application of electric dispersion in bubbling reactors.

Abstract:By a new method of modeling, the DLVO energy interaction between rough nanoparticles and rough surfaces is investigated at various conditions. Rippled sphere model and surface element integration method are used. For calculation of energy interaction, the spherical coordinates are used and by increasing the radius ratio of two particles, the pseudo flat surfaces are generated. With increasing the radius ratio of two particles to 50, the large particle behaves as flat surface in front of small particle. Roughness, size of particles, temperature, zeta potential, capacity, and concentration of ions, which influence the stability of nanocolloidal solutions, are considered by the new method. Spherical coordinates enable to model the rough nanoparticles and rough surfaces so that no simplifying assumptions are needed, which was very difficult and time-consuming in Cartesian coordinate system. New method could predict the effect of different parameters on the stability of nanocolloidal systems precisely, easily, and at short times in comparison to Cartesian coordinate.

Abstract:Surface nanobubbles have revealed a new mechanism of gas-liquid-solid interaction at the nanoscale; however, the nanobubble evolution on real substrates is still veiled, because the experimental observation of contact line motions at the nanoscale is too difficult. Hypothesis: This study proposes a theoretical model to describe the dynamics and stability of nanobubbles on heterogeneous substrates. It simultaneously considers the diffusive equilibrium of the liquid-gas interface and the mechanical equilibrium at the contact line, and introduces a surface energy function to express the substrate's heterogeneity. Validation: The present model unifies the nanoscale stability and the microscale instability of surface bubbles. The theoretical predictions are highly consistent to the nanobubble morphology on heterogeneous surfaces observed in experiments. As the nanobubbles grow, a lower Laplace pressure leads to weaker gas adsorption, and the mechanical equilibrium can eventually revert to the classical Young-Laplace equation above microscale. Findings: The analysis results indicate that both the decrease in substrate surface energy and the increase in gas oversaturation are more conducive to the nucleation and growth of surface nanobubbles, leading to larger stable sizes. The larger surface energy barriers result in the stronger pinning, which is beneficial for achieving stability of the pinned bubbles. The present model is able to reproduce the continual behaviors of the three-phase contact line during the nanobubble evolution, e.g., "pinning, depinning, slipping and jumping" induced by the nanoscale defects.

Abstract:Density functional analyses are performed to study bubble nucleation around a nanoparticle submerged in a supersaturated LJ/s fluid in this paper. Two heterogeneous nucleation modes, i.e. core-shell mode and spherical cap mode, are considered. The minimal free energy path (MFEP) of these two nucleation modes are obtained. Effects of particle wettability and supersaturation of the bulk liquid on heterogeneous nucleation are studied. It is found that the energy barrier of the spherical cap mode nucleation is lower than that of core-shell mode nucleation. However, the difference between energy barriers of the two heterogeneous nucleation modes approaches zero when the particle becomes strongly solvophobic. The disappearance of nucleation barrier is observed for strongly solvophobic particles at high supersaturation.

Abstract:Bubble dynamics plays a significant role in a wide range of industrial fields, such as food, pharmacy and chemical engineering. The physicochemical properties of complex fluids can greatly affect the speed with which bubbles rise, and the lifetime of bubbles, which in turn can affect the efficiency of food and drug manufacturing and also sewage purification. Therefore, it is of great scientific and practical significance to study the influence mechanism of nanoparticles and surfactants on bubble rising and impact in a complex fluid interface. This paper selects a mixed dispersion liquid of nanoparticles (SiO2) and a surfactant (SDS) as the objects of the study, observes in real-time the entire processes of bubbles rising, impact at the gas-liquid interface, and rupture, and analyzes the dynamic mechanism of bubble impact in a complex fluid interface. By analyzing the morphological changes of the rising bubbles, the rising velocity and the lifetime of the bubbles, it is found that the surfactant molecules are distributed in the ultrapure water liquid pool and the liquid film surrounding the bubbles. Such distribution can reduce the viscoelasticity between bubbles and the liquid surface, and lower the surface tension of the liquid, which can reduce the rising velocity of bubbles, delay the drainage process of bubbles on a liquid surface, and enhance the lifetime of bubbles. If the liquid surface is covered with nanoparticles, a reticulate structure will be formed on the bubble liquid film, which can inhibit bubble discharge and prolong bubble lifetime. In addition, the influence of such a reticulate structure on liquid surface tension is limited and its function is far smaller than a surfactant.

Abstract:The adsorption of nano-particles on bubble surface is discussed for saturated boiling on thin wire of nano-particle suspensions. Owing to the decrease of surface tension for suspensions, the nano-particles tend to adsorb on the bubble surface to decrease the Gibbs free energy for stability, and meanwhile the velocity of nano-particles would be smaller than that of bubble growth. The long-range van der Waals force existing between “water particles” and nano-particles is considered the attractive force between the nano-particles and the bubble surface. Thus, the nano-particles would attach on the bubble surface if the particle-surface distance is smaller than its critical value. The distribution of nano-particles on the bubble surface and in the adjacent region is also investigated.

Abstract:This study utilized experimental methods involving high-speed cameras to observe the interaction between cavitation bubbles, generated by a low-voltage electric spark device, and particles near a rigid wall. The dynamic characteristics of the particles were analyzed under varying conditions, including different cavitation bubble sizes, particle sizes, and distances between the cavitation bubble and the wall. Two characteristic parameters were introduced: χ for the particle and cavitation bubble sizes, and λ for the cavitation bubble wall distance. Qualitative distinctions were made among types of particle–bubble interactions, and force analysis was conducted under conditions where χ exceeded the threshold χt. The findings reveal that when χ < χt, particle motion is primarily influenced by the jet effects produced by the cavitation bubble. Conversely, when χ > χt, particle motion is dominated by the radiation forces exerted by the cavitation bubble. Under jet-dominated conditions, particle trajectories were observed to be erratic and unpredictable. For cases where λ < 0, the high-speed jet directly impacts the particle. Conversely, for λ > 0, the jet's velocity decays rapidly upon reaching the particle. In scenarios dominated by radiation forces, the cavitation bubble drew particles away from the wall, followed by their free fall back toward it. The influence of gravity, buoyancy, bubble radiation force, fluid resistance, and virtual mass force on particles was studied when radiation forces prevailed. The acceleration formula for particles was derived through the application of the bubble dynamics equation and was refined based on experimental observations.

Abstract:Bubbles have been extensively explored as energy carriers ranging from boiling heat transfer and targeted cancer diagnosis. Yet, despite notable progress, the kinetic energy inherent in small bubbles remains difficult to harvest. Here, we develop a transistor-inspired bubble energy generator for directly and efficiently harvesting energy from small bubbles. The key points lie in designing dielectric surface with high-density electric charges and tailored surface wettability as well as transistor-inspired electrode configuration. The synergy between these features facilitates fast bubble spreading and subsequent departure, transforms the initial liquid/solid interface into gas/solid interface under the gating of bubble, and yields an output at least one order of magnitude higher than existing studies. We also show that the output can be further enhanced through rapid bubble collapse at the air/liquid interface and multiple bubbles synchronization. We envision that our design will pave the way for small bubble-based energy harvesting in liquid media.

Abstract:Nanometer-scale bubbles (nanobubbles) have been produced by a special method on solid surfaces. The atomic force microscope used to detect these nanobubbles showed that they can be seen on liquid/graphite and liquid/mica interfaces. The conformation of the bubbles was influenced by the atomic steps of the graphite substrate. In addition, shadows found around the bubbles were attributed to the interactions between a bubble adhered to the tip and the bubbles on the surface.

Abstract:The effect of liquid properties on gas bubble growth and motion characteristics in liquid films confined within a nanogap between a highly polished steel ball and a smooth glass disc under an electric field is reported. Experimental results show that the critical voltage for the appearance of bubbles has insignificant dependence on liquid viscosity and surface tension. The bubble size after detachment increases with liquid viscosity, and bubble instability and coalescence tend to occur when bubbles move some distance away from where they were formed. An increase in liquid surface tension results in larger bubbles at the growth stage. Also, the bubble motion characteristics are greatly influenced by liquid viscosity, and the dielectrophoresis force is demonstrated to be the dominant driving force for bubble movement. Theoretical models and analyses have been used to discuss the bubble formation and describe the bubble movement characteristics.
Interfacial Thermal Fluctuations Stabilize Bulk Nanobubbles

Abstract:Consensus on bulk nanobubble stability remains elusive, despite accepted indirect evidence for longevity. We develop a nanobubble evolution model by incorporating thermal capillary wave theory that reveals that dense nanobubbles generated by acoustic cavitation tend to shrink and intensify interfacial thermal fluctuations; this significantly reduces surface tension to neutralize enhanced Laplace pressure, and secures their stabilization at a finite size. A stability criterion emerges: thermal fluctuation intensity scales superlinearly with curvature: sqrt[⟨h^{2}⟩]∝(1/R)^{n}, n>1. The model prolongs the time frame for nanobubble contraction to 2 orders of magnitude beyond classical theory estimates, and captures the equilibrium radius (90-215 nm) within the experimental range.

Abstract:Gas bubbles widely exist in nature and numerous industrial processes. The physicochemical characteristics of bubbles such as large specific surface area, low density, and hydrophobicity make them an ideal platform for developing colloidal and interfacial technologies. Over the past few decades, much effort has been devoted to investigating the properties and behaviors of bubbles and their applications. A series of bubble-based technologies (BBTs) have been developed, which have attracted increasing attention and shown great importance in a wide range of engineering, material, and biological fields. These BBTs, such as bubble flotation and the bubble-liposome system, provide feasible and promising solutions to mineral separation, material assembling, medical diagnosis, and drug delivery. In this work, we have systematically reviewed the physicochemical characteristics of bubbles and how to modulate their behaviors in complex fluid systems, as well as the underlying fundamental interaction mechanisms of bubbles in related BBTs. Advanced nanomechanical techniques such as atomic force microscopy, which are used to quantify the interaction mechanisms in bubble-containing systems, have been introduced. The effects of various influential factors on the bubble behaviors are discussed, which provide potential approaches to improve the controllability and performance of BBTs. The recent advances in the applications of selected BBTs in engineering, biomedical, and material areas are presented. Some remaining challenging issues and perspectives for future studies have also been discussed. This review improves the fundamental understanding of characteristics and surface interaction mechanisms of bubbles, with useful implications for developing advanced BBTs.
