Abstract:Since sailing efficiency directly determines the working capacity and gliding range of an underwater glider, a clear understanding of the energy consumption is a prerequisite for selecting reasonable motion parameters. The total energy consumption of the underwater glider mainly consists of two parts, namely external energy consumption and internal energy consumption. The former is for overcoming drag, while the latter is generated by internal subsystems, such as the control system, navigation system, and measurement system. The various motion parameters of underwater glider have complex influence on these two parts, and there is a trade-off between them to minimize the total energy consumption. This study takes the energy consumption per meter as a sailing efficiency indicator and establishes a mathematical model of total energy consumption. Then, the theoretical analysis is performed to prove the monotonicity of the total energy consumption model with respect to the glide angle and glide speed, respectively. The analytical solutions of optimal glide angle and optimal glide speed with the highest sailing efficiency are obtained, which further produce a global optimal motion state. Finally, an experimental prototype of glider and a visual measurement system are constructed. An image algorithm is developed to identify and track the motion trajectory of the prototype, so as to directly obtain parameters such as glide angle and glide speed. The results of the pool experiment validate the global optimal motion state, which can be used as a guide for motion planning and glider design to improve the sailing efficiency.
