Abstract:Owing to the fine-granularity and the separation of control and data plane, OBS technology has the potential to support Grid applications. In this letter, a general analytical model is established to analyze the impacts of the influential factors of both TCP and OBS layers on the performance of Grid-OBS networks all-roundly. The extensive simulation studies are also conducted. Both the analytical and simulation results show the same trends.

Abstract:In TCP over OBS networks, the parameters from both of TCP and OBS layers will affect the network performance when supporting the upper layer applications, such as Grid application. According to our previous work, we found that TCP window is the key limitation for such a network to support Grid application. The embedded AIMD model of TCP is too conservative. Especially in the network with high bandwidth-delay product scenario, it will take TCP a long time to increase the TCP window according to the slow start and the congestion avoidance rules. In this paper, according to the established analytical model, the TCP window size is optimized in Grid over OBS network. The analytical results show that the optimization of TCP window can improve the TCP throughput significantly.

Abstract:TCP(Transmission Control Protocol) is a widely used reliable transmission protocol,and it is designed on such assumption that most packet losses are caused by congestion.But in wireless networks,packets are lost usually because of bit-errors,which causes dramatic performance declining.Many current methods to improve TCP performance over wireless networks are TCP-aware.This paper proposed an alternative "TCP-unaware" scheme that is suitable for encrypted TCP traffic.It makes TCP source be capable of differentiating a loss due to congestion in the wired network from a loss due to bit-errors in wireless networks.Simulation results show that the scheme can improve TCP performance significantly in both LAN(Local Area Network) and WAN(Wide Area Network).

Abstract:Qos of broadband network is important. ISPs have some methods for evaluate it. But they are not efficient enough. This paper present a new method in which delay and scale of windows of TCP messages are used for evaluating performance of broadband. Comparison between delay or scale of window s of samples is the core idea of the method. There are two kinds of comparison. One is absolute terms of above-mentioned indexes, another is score, that is relative term. We can grade samples according to their scores. It is helpful for locating probably fault situation for ISPs.

Abstract:Future operators of core networks will use Optical Burst Switching (OBS). Therefore it is necessary to evaluate TCP congestion inside the optical core network. In this paper, we investigate the performance of TCP variants over TSL-OBS network. Simulation results show that TCP variants such as XCP and HS-TCP have a better performance than standard TCP in TSL-OBS network.

Abstract:Performance is a key feature of parallel system. However, there is a great gap between the peak performance and performance attainable by a practical application. The model-based performance evaluation may be used to support the performance-oriented program development for parallel system. In this paper a hybrid TCPN model is proposed to describe the parallel program and the resources respectively. This method can bring less effect to modify the program structure because of running environment changes. And the performance engineering activities based on this model ranges from performance prediction in early development stages, performance analysis in the coding phase, to locate the performance bottleneck and modify it. After the correctness verification of the TCPN model, a reachable graph can be got. Then the further performance-tuning can be done by summing the execution time of corresponding action in the critical path.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose FHSTCP (Fair High-Speed TCP) as an improvement of HSTCP, which adds a fair factor to eliminate the difference of congestion window caused by different RTT and adopts block-pacing to reduce the burstiness. Simulation results show that FHSTCP can alleviate the RTT unfairness meanwhile keeping advantages of HSTCP.

Abstract:Due to the bufferless nature of OBS networks, contention will unavoidably occur in core nodes. When the retransmission scheme is introduced into OBS networks, the bursts in the contention will be dropped selectively according to the drop policy adopted in core nodes, and retransmitted by edge nodes. In this paper, we proposed a drop policy based on Hop Number, in which the bursts with the larger total hop number will be given the higher priority in the contention. Taking the retransmission cost into account, we proposed another novel drop policy based on Hop Number Factor. Meanwhile, in edge nodes, multiple thresholds are also proposed to limit the unnecessary retransmission, and ease the deteriorated network performance. Both theoretical analyses and simulation results show that the proposed mechanisms can reduce the burst loss rate and the round trip time effectively, and improve the throughput significantly in TCP over OBS networks with retransmission.

Abstract:The unfairness caused by bandwidth sharing via TCP in data center networks is called TCP Outcast problem. Some researchers show that the throughput of a flow with small Round Trip Time (RTT) is less than that with large RTT which is completely contrary to the classic Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) protocol, and they believe that the Outcast problem is caused by port blackout in data center. However, we find that there are more important reasons for outcast which are an unfair distribution of the flows with different RTT on physical link and the differences in congestion window size when finishing the transmission of current block. TCP Incast is a throughput collapse that occurs when many flows arrive at the switch destined for the same output port. Incast deteriorates the performance of networks by increasing the queuing delay of flows and decreasing the throughput of applications. In this paper, we develop an analytical model for goodput when TCP Outcast occurs. Then we propose a new protocol based on window notification mechanism called TCP congestion window replacement (TCP-CWR), which can improve the goodput of the flows with small RTT to solve the outcast problem. Second, we propose a new transport layer protocol based on acknowledgment (ACK) reply changing rate to solve the Incast problem named TCP with Acknowledgment Changing Rate (TCP-ACR). The TCP-ACR protocol adjusts the current congestion window according to the changing rate of ACK and the theoretical maximum congestion window, and it can alleviate the congestion in data center networks. Last, we conduct simulation experiments to verify our proposed schemes. The results show that our analysis of Outcast is correct and our proposed protocols for Outcast and Incast are effective and practical.
TCP Window Based Dynamic Assembly Period in Optical Burst Switching Network.

Abstract:In OBS network, assembly period and burst drop rate impact the performance of the upper layer. This paper evaluates the effect of parameters of OBS network on the throughput of TCP. Based on a general network model, we made theoretical analysis and simulation. In the analytical model, a parameter called window data dropping probability p(w) is introduced to study the correlation between the TCP window size and parameters of OBS network. Both theoretical and numerical results show the same trends, which verify the correctness of the analytical model. From the results, an optimal assembly period is found to exist under certain burst drop rate, with which we can obtain the best throughput of TCP. Dynamic assembly period (DAP) algorithm we proposed can track the variation of the current TCP window size and update the assembly period dynamically for the next assembly operation. Simulation results show that DAP algorithm can improve the performance of TCP over OBS network.

Abstract:In this letter, we proposed a novel efficient infrastructure for grid based on "dual-link-server" optical burst switching (OBS) network to improve the performance of burst contention resolution scheme. The functional block required to support grid services is identified as one uniform grid network interface. The details of associated challenges in terms of functionality and technology were discussed and solutions were obtained. Dual-link-server model is used to solve the collision problem. The numerical simulation was performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. Techno-economic analysis results show that "dual-link-server" architecture for OBS grid is efficient and cost-effective.

Abstract:AbstractThe characteristics of cognitive radio networks have huge impacts on the end-to-end performance of the transmission control protocol TCP for secondary users. Thus, the existing TCP throughput expression, widely used in wired and wireless networks, is no longer suitable for cognitive radio networks. In this paper, we derive the transmission opportunity of secondary users, taking into account the dynamics of spectrum availability, the overhead and errors of spectrum sensing, as well as the interaction between TCP and lower layers. The amount of transmission opportunity is expressed in terms of effective data transmission time. On the basis of the analysis of the transmission opportunity, an expression of an effective TCP throughput is then derived. To evaluate this effective TCP throughput expression, two cross-layer optimization problems are formulated as application examples to maximize the transport layer effective throughput and energy utility, respectively. Simulation results show that our analysis on transmission opportunity is accurate, and the derived effective TCP throughput expression is more precise than existing ones. Flow-oriented Dynamic Assembly Algorithm in TCP over OBS Networks

Abstract:OBS is envisioned as a promising infrastructure for the next generation optical network, and TCP is likely to be the dominant transport protocol in the next generation network. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the performance of TCP over OBS networks. The assembly at the ingress edge nodes will impact the network performance. There have been several Fixed Assembly Period (FAP) algorithms proposed. However, the assembly period in FAP is fixed, and it can not be adjusted according to the network condition. Moreover, in FAP, the packets from different TCP sources are assembled into one burst. In that case, if such a burst is dropped, the TCP windows of the corresponding sources will shrink and the throughput will be reduced. In this paper, we introduced a flow-oriented Dynamic Assembly Period (DAP) algorithm for TCP over OBS networks. Through comparing the previous and current burst lengths, DAP can track the variation of TCP window, and update the assembly period dynamically for the next assembly. The performance of DAP is evaluated over a single TCP connection and multiple connections, respectively. The simulation results show that DAP performs better than FAP at almost the whole range of burst dropping probability.

Abstract:In cognitive radio networks (CRNs), the performance of transmission control protocol (TCP) of the secondary user (SU) is drastically influenced by the primary users' activities and the imperfect spectrum sensing. This is because not only the channel unavailability, sensing overhead and sensing errors, but also the strong interaction between TCP and the lower layers will lead to the reduction of the data transmission time. In this paper, we analyze the TCP throughput by taking into account all the causes of the reduction of the data transmission time, and then propose a TCP throughput model for CRNs. By simulation, we verify that our proposed TCP throughput model is more accurate than the conventional ones.

Abstract:With the evolvement of grid applications, the need for user controlled network infrastructure is apparent in order to support emerging dynamic and interactive services. In this paper, a novel fast light-path set-up protocol, named forward reserve backward release protocol, is proposed to meet these requirements. The proposed protocol addresses the signaling over head for dynamic wavelength networks in a distributed way. It can quickly set up a light-path. And it can reduce light- path provisioning time significantly and increase network performance.
On TCP Performance in Multihop Wireless Networks

Abstract:This paper studies TCP performance over static, ad hoc networks that use IEEE 802.11 protocol as the access method. Our study reveals some interesting results. First, there exists an optimal value for TCP congestion window size, at which the TCP throughput is maximized. However, TCP does not operate around this optimal point, and typically grows its window much larger; this leads to decreased throughput and increased packet loss. To better understand this behavior, we further study the characteristics of TCP packet loss. Our results show that, network overload is mainly signified by wireless link contention. As long as the buffer size at each node is reasonable (larger than 10 packets), buffer overflow-induced packet loss is rare and packet drops due to link-layer contention dominate. Link-layer drops offer the first sign for network overload. We further observe that multihop wireless links collectively demonstrate Random Early Detection (RED) like graceful drop behavior, but the current TCP protocol does not adapt well to this built-in grace drop characteristic. We further propose two techniques of link RED and adaptive spacing at the link layer, and simulations show that they can improve TCP throughput by 5% to 30%.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel Burst Drop Policy based on Hop Number Factor (HNF) in the core nodes of TCP over OBS networks, which is combined with Multiple Thresholds in the edge nodes. The proposed drop policy, HNF, takes the retransmission cost into account, and gives the burst with the larger Hop Number Factor the higher priority in the contention. On the other hand, for the retransmission is not always effective, multiple Edge Thresholds, Retransmission Number Threshold (RNT), Traffic load Threshold (TlT) and Total hop Threshold (ThT), are proposed to limit the unnecessary retransmission in the OBS layer. If any of the thresholds is exceeded, the retransmission will be handed over to the upper layer, the TCP layer, which will be more cost-effective. The simulation results show that the combined mechanism can reduce the burst loss rate, decrease the round trip time and improve the throughput of TCP over OBS networks significantly.

Abstract:Transport Control Protocol (TCP) is known to have poor performance over unreliable wireless links where packet losses due to transmission errors are misinterpreted as indications of network congestion. Hence, the performance of TCP over such wireless networks without any modification would suffer significant degradation of throughput and high interactive delay. First, the recent development of wireless networks and the current problems with TCP are introduced. Then, the enhancements of TCP performance in wireless networks are categorized into several approaches and their advantages and disadvantages are summarized. Finally, the evolution of wireless networks in the future is described and the challenges of future research are discussed and analyzed.

Abstract:In this paper, the burst drop policy based on Hop-Count-Factor (HCF) is proposed in the core nodes of OBS networks. The proposed HCF Drop Policy (HCFDP) takes the fairness of the network resources reservation into account and gives the burst with the larger HCF the higher priority in the contention. We also analyze the retransmission scheme in OBS networks theoretically. When HCFDP is combined with the retransmission scheme, the simulation results show that the integrated mechanism can reduce the burst loss rate, decrease the round trip time and improve the throughput of OBS networks.

Abstract:With fiber being cheaper and cheaper, the core fiber bandwidth utilization is not the key factor of the network, how to use the huge bandwidth flexibly and efficiently is one of the hot topics of optical networks. Optical burst switching (OBS) is the best choice to statistically use the optical resources, OBS based transparent optical network attracting attentions. We proposed an integrated policy by using dual fiber links server model along with traffic spacing mechanism (TSM) by address differentiating and transmitting those traffics between adjacent nodes by IP directly, the others by OBS mechanism. The theoretical results show that this method can improve network performance and be practically used in fields.
