Abstract:Geographic routing in wireless sensor networks suffers from the local minimum phenomenon. To help packets get out of local minimum phenomenon, the long-known right-hand rule is used, which needs the graphs planarizing. It will lost many links and doesn't suit adaptive routing. Through studying the local minimum phenomenon deeply, we find out that greedy forwarding in restricting routing regions could deal with the local rninimum phenomenon. Based on the observation, a new method Clockwise Rule was proposed, which does not lost any links and more suits adaptive routing. We also proposed an adaptive parallel multi-path routing algorithm (APMR) using Clockwise Rule, which can provide various routing strategies and switch these strategies at relay nodes freely. Simulations show that APMR can significantly improve the performance of wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:Network topologies are not only continuously growing, but many devices become mobile and some sort of guaranteed quality of service (QoS) is now required. In order to efficiently deal with the changing traffic loads and topologies, reduce the phenomena of congestions, this paper describes a new adaptive dynamic routing algorithm for packet-switched communications networks based on simple biological "ants" that explore the network and learn good routes, using a novel variation of reinforcement learning. Simulation results confirm that the algorithm is shown to significantly improve the network's relaxation and its response to perturbations.
Comparative Study of Different Routing and Connection Management Schemes in Hierarchical ASON

Abstract:Four kinds of routing and connection management schemes in hierarchical ASON are proposed in this paper.These schemes are Link State based Hierarchical Routing and Forward resource Reservation (LS-HRFR),Link State based Source Routing and Forward resource Reservation (LS-SRFR),local information and Probing based Hierarchical Routing and Backward resource Reservation (P-HRBR),local information and Probing based Source Routing and Backward resource Reservation (P-SRBR) respectively.The performances of these schemes in hierarchical networks are compared through discrete event simulation.The results indicate that,compared with link state based schemes,probing based schemes can improve the connection acceptance capacity of a network greatly in source routing scenarios while they hardly improve that capacity in hierarchical routing scenarios.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the topology aggregation problem in hierarchical ASON networks. Usually, the requirement of scalability and security of the network is fulfilled by domain division. The relevant information exchanged among domains will be greatly increased for large scale networks. The topology aggregation aims at reducing the amount of link state information without losing accuracy for routing calculation. We propose to apply a bidirectional shuffle-net model to topology abstraction procedure, which can significantly reduce the size of link state information. A genetic algorithm is utilized to construct the optimal mapping relationship between shuffle-net and aggregated topology for accuracy purpose. Simulation shows that the proposed scheme has good performance compared with symmetric-star approach and heuristic shuffle-net algorithm.

Abstract:Hierarchical routing architecture has been adopted by ASON for scaling purpose, and corresponding changes in both network management structure and management information models result. Based on the discussion of new requirements for ASON management system to support the hierarchical routing infrastructure, an ASON management system is proposed and developed in this paper with new network management information models. Finally, the flexibility of the proposed management system is demonstrated on an ASON testbed with 200 emulated nodes.

Abstract:The multi-log(2)N network architecture is attractive for constructing optical switches, and the related routing algorithms are critical for the operation and efficiency of such switches. Although several routing algorithms have been proposed for multi-log(2)N networks, a full performance comparison among them has not been published lip to now. Thus, we rectify this omission by providing Such a comparison in terms of blocking probability, time complexity, hardware cost and load balancing capability. Notice that the load balance is important for reducing the peak power requirement of a switch, so we also propose in this paper a new routing algorithm for optical multi-log(2)N networks to achieve a better load balance.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an ant-based algorithm for dynamic routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) in WDM optical networks under the wavelength continuity constraint. By adopting a new routing table structure and keeping a number of ants in the network to cooperatively explore the network states and continuously update the routing tables, our new ant algorithm can efficiently support the ants' foraging tasks of route selection and wavelength assignment in WDM networks, and allow a connection to be setup promptly on arrival with a small setup time. Extensive simulation results based on the ns-2 network simulator indicate that the proposed algorithm can adapt well to traffic variations and achieves a lower blocking probability than the fixed routing algorithm.

Abstract:Existing name space definitions in automatically switched optical network(ASON) hierarchical routing always suffer from limitations.A sectioned common name space definition method was developed and used to build a large ASON hierarchical routing testbed.Tests of the sectioned name space definition method show that the method provides effective control and management of the hierarchies.Since no extra mapping of the hierarchies is needed,the method efficiently reduces the mapping table maintenance costs and increases network stability.

Abstract:A fast hierarchical subnet restoration method was developed to improve the survivability of large scale automatically switched optical networks(ASON.This restoration mechanism takes full advantage of the agility of hierarchical routing and uses the SPF routing algorithm for the hierarchical signal processing,which greatly improves the network resource utilization efficiency while simultaneously reducing the restoration time.The performance of the hierarchical subnet restoration method was analyzed based on the simulated restoration time.The results show that for connections across multiple domains,this method has a faster restoration time and the restoration time can be further reduced by reducing the subnet scale.

Abstract:The routing issues in multi-layer and multi-domain optical networks have drawn much attention in current research. With the introduction of the path computation element, routes can be calculated more efficiently in multi-domain optical networks. However, the optimal degree of routing approach in multi-layer and multi-domain optical networks is also determined by the clustering algorithms deployed for construction of hierarchical networks. Therefore, it is important to investigate the way to evaluate the impact of the clustering algorithm on the routing approach (e.g., blocking probability) in optical networks with dynamic traffic, which has not been studied sufficiently. In this paper, a novel method to describe and evaluate the clustered structures generated by different clustering algorithms for hierarchical optical networks is proposed. This method deploys a novel evaluation metric that represents blocking probability of clustered optical networks, so it can be used as guidelines for designing clustered structures. Besides theoretical analysis, simulations are carried out on different network topologies and clustered types to validate the effectiveness of the method presented.

Abstract:The wavelength selective switch-based reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers is a promising switching equipment for future reconfigurable wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks. However, its asymmetric switching property complicates the optimal routing and wavelength assignment problem. In an asymmetric switching scenario, using the classic Dijkstra’s algorithm can lead to invalid paths traversing unconnected ports of an asymmetric node. To solve this problem, we propose both link-state (LS) and distance vector (DV) schemes for dynamic lightpath provisioning in optical WDM mesh networks with asymmetric nodes. The proposed LS schemes include the asymmetric switching-aware (ASA) Dijkstra’s algorithm, the K -shortest path-based algorithm, and the entire path searching (EPS) algorithm. Simulation results show that the ASA-Dijkstra’s algorithm will bring notable improvement of the blocking performance with low computational complexity, while the EPS algorithm has much higher complexity and is not suitable to be employed in large-scale networks. On the other hand, our proposed DV solution, i.e., the information diffusion-based routing (IDBR), can achieve the lowest blocking probability with the lowest computational complexity. Moreover, IDBR does not require the distribution of local asymmetric switching information like the LS schemes, thus having a high level of topology confidentiality.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new approach for building non-blocking optical MINs on building blocks of given size. The network constructed by our approach is self-routing and has O(log2N) propagation delay for size N×N. The maximum signal loss and crosstalk are compared to those of the widely used crossbar network with the switch complexity of O(N2). The proposed approach is a good choice for constructing non-blocking optical switch networks with low signal loss and crosstalk.

Abstract:Automatic Switched Optical Network (ASON) represents the development trend of optical networks. Multi-granularity optical switching is the importantly physically supporting techniques for ASON to realize traffic engineering and quality of service(QoS). The type of node structure realizing multi-granularity optical swithing in ASON is put forward and a multi-granularity optical switch using this structure is developed. The software for controlling the node in ASON is compiled. The experimental research is carried out with campus network as signalling network and the data network is of mesh architecture, which is a typical architecture in ASON. The main functions of ASON are verified.

Abstract:This paper proposes an inter-domain routing algorithm for multi-domain WDM networks based on hierarchical PCE architecture. The proposed algorithm presents a strategy of selecting k random paths in parent PCE. The simulation indicates that the proposed algorithm outperforms previous methods in term of blocking probability and resource utilization.

Abstract:In large scale networks composed of several hierarchical subnetworks, topology aggregation is implemented for both scalability and security consideration. However, due to the special characteristic of optical wavelength-routed networks, existing topology aggregation algorithms cannot be applied directly for topology compression. In this paper, we propose a kind of topology aggregation algorithm suitable for hierarchical wavelength-routed optical networks, thereby considering information of residual wavelengths on network links. Basically, our topology aggregation algorithm is based on a transition matrix technique for constructing a full mesh topology and asymmetric star approach for a more compact topology. Simulations with randomly-generated networks show that topology information compression can be achieved with a little loss of its accuracy: the ratio of border node pairs with representation deviation being well below 10%. Results also indicate that the advantage of our algorithm is also behaved on reducing the amount of link-state-advertisement messages and making networks less vulnerable to propagation delay of these messages over communication links.

Abstract:Compared with electrical packet switches, optical switching technology could enable a more desirable high-performance computing (HPC) system with lower power consumption, lower delay, higher bandwidth, and more flexibility. In this article, we designed a hierarchical and reconfigurable optical/electrical HPC interconnection network. The traffic matrix of the target task can be decomposed into multiple matrix groups that are executed in parallel, and the network topology in each layer can be reconfigured according to the subtraffic matrix associated with this layer. For interlayer cross-connection, we use a shuffle network to offer a direct optical bypass for a huge aggregated amount of interlayer communication requirements, as well as multiple light paths. We propose a reconfiguration optimization algorithm and routing algorithm to optimize network performance. Simulation results show that, with the proposed architecture and algorithms, the average path length per unit of communication intensity is minimized by 13.7%–52.4%, the delay is reduced by more than 14.8%, and throughput is improved by 33% at least compared with Mesh, Torus, and Dragonfly.

Abstract:We propose a new lightpath routing algorithm for WDM optical networks that solves the routing and wavelength assignment (commonly known as RWA) problem dynamically and separately. The RWA problem is partitioned into two subproblems, the routing and wavelength assignment problems, and both of them are solved using the shortest path routing technique. For solving the routing subproblem, an auxiliary graph is created whereby the nodes and links in the original network are transformed to the edges and vertices, respectively, and the availability of each wavelength on the input and output links of a node as well as the number of available wavelength converters are taken into account in determining the weights of edges. Furthermore, for solving the wavelength assignment subproblem, an auxiliary graph is also utilized and the cost for wavelength conversion is taken into consideration in the edge weight function. Simulation results show that our algorithm performs much better than previously proposed algorithms in terms of blocking probability, especially if the number of wavelengths is large while the number of converters at each node is limited.

Abstract:The quality of service (QoS) requirements of end users and services are totally different, and thus the multi-oriented (user-oriented and service-oriented) scheduling for access networks based on a remote scheduling system especially for EPONs is desired to replace the single-oriented (user-oriented or service-oriented) scheduling. In this paper we introduce a novel hierarchical algorithm of intra-ONU scheduling for multi-oriented QoS, which can guarantee both the priority of the differentiated services and the fairness of the different users. Numerical results have shown that our overall scheduling algorithm can fulfill various requirements of delay and throughput for the transmission of multimedia traffic for each end user.

Abstract:Optical network-on-chip (ONoC) is an emerging architecture to realize high-performance and low power consumption for many-core processors. Multicast in ONoC is a vital communication pattern widely used in parallel computing and computational genomics. This paper proposes an efficient scheme for multiple multicast requests in ONoC. Firstly, we design an algorithm to construct two trees for two multicasts without duplicate edges in a mesh topology, and it only uses one wavelength. We propose a graph to represent the relationship between each multicast. Secondly, a group-based wavelength assignment scheme is designed to assign wavelengths for multiple multicasts. Finally, we used data analysis to extract helpful simulation results to form conclusions. The results indicate that our algorithm is superior to other tree-based schemes in communication latency and wavelength number usage.
