Abstract:In this article, we propose a spherical shell-core structure which is able to achieve arbitrarily large directivity. The structure is obtained from coordinate transformation. A small antenna can be projected to free space with a large dimension, which subsequently leads to a large directivity.

Abstract:We show in this letter that, by using an inhomogeneous metamaterial shell, it is possible to achieve highly directive emission with a small antenna aperture. The material parameters of the metamaterial substrate are obtained by a nonmonotonic optical transformation. Therefore, a large antenna can be effectively transformed to an equivalent one with much smaller aperture. Full-wave finite-element modeling has been performed to confirm this point. The concept proposed here provides a possible solution to reduce the size of antenna without disturbing the radiation characteristics.
A shape design method of large space deployable paraboloid antenna

Abstract:There will be array parabolic antenna or directly-radiating array antenna set on the satellites to get shaped beams. But when the frequency increases there will exist two negative factors in the network. So when there needs an overlay for a certain area, single-feed and single reflector can also act and work well and replace the two methods mentioned above and it can lead to good result. This method needs no electronic adjustment and costs less and the radio-waste will be low too. A new far field synthesis method is provided in the paper, in which the aperture plane is meshed and the integral variables can be separated in every mesh, then the Fresnel integral is used to improve the computing speed. The upper truss end coordinates are regarded as the optimizing parameters to form the beam. A rectangle area and the China area were simulated as two beam-forming examples using this method. The radiation field in the service areas distributed more evenly, and there were more energy in the controlling region after beam forming. The reflector design was performed and the deployment test as the whole antenna was carried out last year. Copyright IAF/IAA. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate highly directive emission based on anisotropic metamaterials with spatial dispersion of very narrow hyperbola. By embedding the source inside a slab of such material, the emitted energy, both inside and outside the material, is concentrated around the normal of the slab, and a perfect far-field radiation is thus achieved. This effect is verified experimentally in the microwave domain, and a directivity that is far larger than the best one to our knowledge is obtained from the constructed antenna.

Abstract:The size of an antenna should be relatively large in order to get high radiation directivity. However, in some applications, the antenna is restricted in small region, while high directivity is still required. In this paper, we propose the method of realizing antenna with large effective apertures using arbitrary shaped small PEC reflectors and small volumes of left-handed materials based on coordinate transformation. This design method is validated by the numerical simulations based on the Finite Element Method (FEM).

Abstract:Achieving high directivity antenna usually requires a large size antenna aperture in traditional antenna design. Previous work shows that, with the help of metamaterials and transformation optics, a small size antenna can perform as high directivity as a large size antenna, but the material parameters are inhomogeneous and difficult to realize. In this paper, we propose a linear homogeneous coordinate transformation to design the small size antenna. Distinguishing from inhomogeneous transformation, we construct a regular polygon in virtual space and then divide it into several triangle segments. By applying linear homogeneous coordinate transformation, the antenna devices can be greatly compressed without disturbing the radiation patterns by using homogeneous metamaterial substrates. The material parameters of the antenna designed from this method are homogeneous and easy to fabricate. Square and hexagonal antenna structures are numerically demonstrated to illustrate the validity of our methodology.

Abstract:In this article, the highly directive emission based on a new type of metamaterial has been demonstrated. A structure of crossed metallic strips with slots is designed. By embedding the source, inside a slab of such material, the emitted energy is concentrated around the normal of the slab based on the zero refraction principle. An antenna is constructed, and the simulation has been done on it. The results show that highly directive property is achieved. Abstract:In this paper, we achieve highly directive emission based on left-handed metamaterial. By employing the anisotropic characteristics, the electromagnetic (EM) wave propagates along only one direction inside the medium and has a quasi-plane phase front; the electromagnetic (EM) waves emitted from the medium would behave high directional. This property is verified by both the numerical simulation and the experimental measurement.

Abstract:Biconical-type antennas featuring high directivity have been designed, created, and tested in anechoic chamber. Results in the range between 1 and 5 GHz are presented in this article. In particular, two different configurations have been tested, with and without dielectric lenses, both involving rapid prototyping tools (3D printing) for the dielectric and the antenna support. A very high directivity is nowadays demanded by efficient and sustainable point-to-point communications or energy transfer protocols, to avoid releasing energy in neighboring areas and preserve data transfer security. As demonstrated here, special biconical type antennas featuring a 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) dielectric lens can achieve a good directivity, with a corresponding emission lobe centered around 8.4 degrees, featuring a FWHM of 6.4 degrees. Dielectric lens-free antennas, featuring an unconventional shape, can also achieve a good directivity, with a corresponding emission lobe centered around 10.0 degrees, featuring a FWHM of 14.2 degrees. The preliminary results shown here explore some of the aspects of the vast configuration space (which include fabrication techniques, dielectric materials, conductive supports, etc.) and open the route for further optimization studies. The aim would be to adjust the various degrees of freedom in order to achieve what can be defined as "infinite" directivity.

Abstract:An experimental demonstration of directivities exceeding the fundamental Kildal limit, a phenomenon called superdirectivity, is provided for spherical high-index dielectric antennas with an electric dipole excitation. A directivity factor of about 10 with a total efficiency of more than 80\% for an antenna having a size of a third of the wavelength was measured. High directivities are shown to be associated with constructive interference of particular electric and magnetic modes of an open spherical resonator. Both analytic solution for a point dipole and a full-wave rigorous simulation for a realistic dipole antenna were employed for optimization and analysis, yielding an excellent agreement between experimentally measured and numerically predicted directivities. The use of high-index low-loss ceramics can significantly reduce the physical size of such antennas while maintaining their overall high radiation efficiency. Such antennas can be attractive for various high-frequency applications, such as antennas for the Internet of things, smart city systems, 5G network systems, and others. The demonstrated concept can be scaled in frequency.

Abstract:In this paper we use spatially variant metamaterial substrate to manipulate the directivity of antennas. We show theoretically that by embedding a dipole at different locations inside this substrate, the emitted rays can be directed to different orientations as required. As a result, spatial multiplexing can be realized by carefully selecting proper parameters of this substrate. It can also be observed that the electric field received in this antenna system is enhanced when it is used for reception. Simulations based on finite element method are used to validate our theoretical analysis, showing a controllable high directive property. In order to simplify the physical realization process, we propose the reduced parameters for practical design and also study it with numerical simulations.

Abstract:This paper uses a Computer Simulation Technology microwave studio to simulate the performance of a new highdirectivity anisotropic magnetic metamaterial antenna loaded with a frequency-selective surface.Frequency-selective surface with cross-dipole element has a great effect on the directivity,radiation pattern,and gain of such an antenna.The experimental results show that frequency-selective surface（FSS） significantly improve the radiation performance of anisotropic magnetic metamaterial antenna.For example,as a single anisotropic magnetic metamaterial antenna,half power beam width is 4 degrees in the H planes,and the gain of this antenna is 19.5 dBi at 10 GHz,achieving a 2.1 degree increment in half power beam width,and a 7.3 dB gain increment by loading with the FSS reflector.The simulating results are consistent with our experimental results.
High Directive Antenna Using Quasi-Periodic Planar Metamaterial Substrates

Abstract:We report our experimental and theoretical studies on a metamaterial substrate consisting of a quasi-periodic metallic planar pattern and a flat metal sheet, interconnected through metallic vias. We show that this structure possesses multiple in-phase reflection frequency regimes and spectral gaps for transverse-magnetic surface waves, whereas the transverse-electric surface waves are suppressed in all frequencies. In particular, an antenna put on top of this planar structure radiates with very high directivity (D=240) at some frequencies. This phenomenon is mainly governed by the inhomogeneity of the structure, which is a collective effect of perfect magnetic and electric conductors operating simultaneously at the frequency.

Abstract:We propose a novel kind of cavity antenna based on a one-dimensional LHM-RHM cavity resonator. The resonance condition for such a cavity resonator is analytically presented. It is proved that the thickness of the antenna can be much smaller than the working wavelength. The simulation and experimental results for our cavity antenna agree with the theoretical prediction with relatively high directivity.

Abstract:Small form-factor, narrowband, and highly directive antennas are of critical importance in a variety of applications spanning wireless communications, remote sensing, Raman spectroscopy, and single photon emission enhancement. Surprisingly, we show that the classical directivity limit can be appreciably surpassed for electrically small multilayer spherical antennas excited by a point electric dipole even if limiting ourselves to purely dielectric materials. Experimentally feasible designs of superdirective antennas are established by using a stochastic optimization algorithm combined with a rigorous analytic solution.

Abstract:Abstract The article presents the results of numerical simulation by the finite element method of a spherical dielectric resonator with a dipole antenna placed inside. The directional properties of this type of antenna in the 2–4 GHz and 0.2–0.35 THz bands are calculated. It is shown that in a narrow band due to high order Mie resonances, the peak directivity of the antenna can reach values of 12.5 dBi with radiation efficiency of 0.9 and a sphere size of the order of 1.2 λ. A variant of the antenna for the 0.2–0.35 THz range with its placement on a dielectric substrate is proposed, and the dimensional ratios of the structural elements for the narrow-band mode with maximum gain are presented.

Abstract:We demonstrate a simple way to achieve superdirectivity of electrically small antennas based on a spherical dielectric particle with a notch. We predict this effect theoretically for nanoantennas excited by a point-like emitter located in the notch, and then confirm it experimentally at microwaves for a ceramic sphere excited by a small wire dipole. We explain the effect of superdirectivity by the resonant excitation of high-order multipole modes of electric and magnetic fields which are usually negligible for small perfect spherical particles.

Abstract:In the present paper, the properties of an antenna centred at a metamaterial slab with zero permittivity are investigated. It is analyzed that the antenna can achieve high directive performance. Its half power beam width (HPBW) decreases monotonically with the increase of the width of the slab. While the gain of such antenna can only be 0dB independent of the slab's width. When the permittivity deviates form zero to a little positive number, antenna can achieve high gain by choosing appropriate slab's width due to the transmission resonance. The effect of loss is also analyzed.

Abstract:A new antenna array architecture is proposed here to overcome a current bottleneck in phased arrays concerning the enhancement of radiation efficiency and avoidance of scan blindness. In contrast to the conventional approach of using patches with circular or square geometries that exploit 90 ∘ or 180 ∘ rotational symmetry, this work proposes to use waveguide radiating elements based on 120 ∘ symmetry. To implement such symmetry, the tri-ridge aperture is proposed, and its capability to scan widely within a broad frequency bandwidth is demonstrated. A modal analysis is performed to explain the physical phenomena underlying such superior performance. A successful experimental validation is provided by means of a monolithic prototype built in metal additive manufacturing. The measured results show, for the first time, that it is possible to achieve high radiation efficiency and circular polarization when scanning widely in a broad bandwidth. Such an accomplishment constitutes a major achievement in the field of active electronically steered phased arrays, and impacts significantly the capabilities and potential of modern radar and communication systems.

Abstract:Zero-index metamaterials (ZIMs) can support uniform electromagnetic field distributions at any frequency. Performance of ZIMs-based applications is hampered by the conventional ZIM's homogenization level-only 3 unit cells per free-space wavelength, which is essentially limited by the low-permittivity inclusions $(\varepsilon_{\mathrm{r}}\approx 12)$ and background matrix $(\varepsilon_{\mathrm{r}}\approx 1)$ . Here, by filling high-permittivity SrTiO 3 ceramic $(\varepsilon_{\mathrm{r}}\approx 294)$ pillars in BaTiO3 $(\varepsilon_{\mathrm{r}}\approx 25)$ background matrix, we demonstrated a highly homogeneous microwave ZIM, leading to an over 3-fold increase in the homogenization level. Based on the uniform distribution of the spatial phase throughout the ZIM, we demonstrated a high-directivity antenna by incorporating our ZIM in a metallic waveguide, approaching the fundamental limit in the antenna directivity when the aperture size varies from $0.7\lambda_{0}\times 0.7\lambda 0$ to a very large scale. This antenna has broad applications in wireless communications, remote sensing, and global positioning satellites.
