Abstract:Connection reliability is one important service level agreement (SLA) parameter for a customer and should be carefully considered in survivable WDM networks. A sound scheme should guarantee customers' reliability and simultaneously benefit a service provider in resource efficiency. Under the SLA constraints and the assumption of shared risk link group (SRLG) failures, a novel dynamic differentiated shared path-protection algorithm (DDSP) in WDM mesh networks is proposed. Based on the basic ideas of the K-shortest path algorithm and partial SRLGdisjoint protection, DDSP can provide differentiated services for customers according to their SLA parameters while optimizing resource utilization. Simulation results show that DDSP not only can efficiently guarantee the specific SLA requirements of customers, but also can achieve significant performance gain and lead to remarkable reduction in blocking probability.

Abstract:The notion of service level agreements (SLA) has been proposed to capture qualitatively and quantitatively defined performance contracts between service providers and their customers. How to provision satisfiable connections for customers according to their SLA parameters to avoid penalty as well as minimizing cost is one of the main concerns for a service provider. Connection reliability and restoration time are two important SLA parameters for a customer, and should be carefully considered in survivable wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) networks. A sound scheme should guarantee customers' reliability and reduce restoration time while benefiting a service provider in resource efficiency. Under the SLA constraints and the assumption of single link failure, we first investigate a partial link-disjoint protection (PLDP) and analyze its availability and average restoration time. We then propose a dynamic constraint shared path protection (DCSP) algorithm in WDM mesh networks. Based on the basic ideas of the K-shortest path algorithm and PLDP, DCSP can provide differentiated services for customers according to their SLA parameters while being favorable for reducing average restoration time and optimizing resource utilization. Simulation results show that DCSP can efficiently guarantee the specific SLA requirements of customers with a slight increase in the blocking probability while still achieving spare resource sharing and restoration time optimizations.

Abstract:This paper investigates backup reprovisioning technique to mitigate the impact of double near-simultaneous link failure scenarios. First, a refined model is introduced for accurate identification of vulnerable connections after the failure of the first link. Then, an improved approach, termed Successive Backup Reprovisioning (SBR), is developed for online backup reprovisioning to further reduce the number of affected connections when no extra capacities are added to the network for reprovisioning purpose. Complexity analysis and simulation results show that SBR has advantages in tradeoff between capacity efficiency and execution speed.

Abstract:The distance vector routing protocol is not able to deal with network failures effectively, which results a significant forwarding discontinuity after a failure. In order to improve the failure resiliency without jeopardizing routing stability, a fast network self-healing mechanism for the distance vector routing protocol (FS-DVP) is proposed. The new mechanism uses a reactive failure recovery strategy. Every node prepares multiple feasible next hops per destination. When nodes find the next hops unreachable, they will choose the best next hops from the set of backup next hops to forwarding data. Furthermore, FS-DVP uses the stability-based triggered routing update mechanism in the suppression of its failure notification for providing better stability for network. Finally, FS-DVP is applied to Routing Information Protocol (RIP), and the simulation performance show that it can effectively deal with the simultaneous failures of multiple arbitrary links and improve stability and availability of networks.

Abstract:This paper studies quantitatively the benefit of startup-failure-driven backup path reprovisioning in terms of connection availability in shared-path-protected optical networks. Numerical results show that shared path protection with startup-failure-driven reprovisioning reduces connection unavailability, and is most efficient when the capacity utilization during the no-failure phases is around 60%.

Abstract:A resource-efficient provisioning framework (RPF) is proposed in this paper for optical networks providing dedicated path protection (DPP) and shared path protection (SPP) services. The framework reduces resource consumption by considering spare capacity reservation of DPP and SPP cooperatively while provides 100% survivability guarantee and maintains the recovery time for both protection types against the predominant single link failures. To tackle the service provisioning problem under the framework, an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation is presented to find the optimal routing solution for a given set of traffic demands. The objective is to minimize total capacities consumed by working and backup paths of all demands. Then, heuristics are developed for on-line routing under dynamic change of traffic. Numerical results show that compared with traditional provisioning framework (TPF), the RPF has the following advantages: (1) Over 10% capacity savings are achieved for static service provisioning; (2) blocking probability of both protection types is greatly reduced; (3) lower resource over build is achieved; and (4) average backup-path hop distance of shared-path-protected flows is reduced. Finally, network survivability in face of double link failures is discussed under the framework.

Abstract:Feature Issue on Next-Generation WDM Network Design and Routing (WDMN). The increasing demand for bandwidth that has resulted from the emergence of various bandwidth-thirsty applications has increased the need for employing WDM as a dominant technology for the next-generation optical internet. As these networks carry gigantic amounts of information, survivability has become a primary and basic need for them. Although the available proactive protection schemes provide a 100% restoration guarantee, they require huge redundancy and usually result in a very high blocking probability. We propose a novel active restoration scheme that restores a failed primary lightpath based on multiple predefined but nonreserved backup paths along the primary path. Extensive simulation results based on three typical test networks indicate that with a small increase in restoration time, our new restoration scheme can reduce the blocking probability and the capacity requirement significantly while guaranteeing a very high restoration probability.

With 100% protection guarantee, our proposed scheme can accommodate reasonable contention for sharing resources and minimize backup capacity for reservation. Abstract:As the size and the complexity of optical mesh networks grow, double-link failures become more probable. To protect against double-link failures, we generally have to provision more backup resources with respect to single-link failures. To improve the resource efficiency, it is important to reduce backup resources used for surviving double-link failures. In this paper, we investigate some representative sharing schemes and propose an enhanced resource sharing scheme with resource contention resolution for double-link failures in survivable optical mesh networks. By fully taking into account the temporal and spatial factors, our scheme can accommodate reasonable contention for sharing resources and minimize backup resources for reservation with 100% protection guarantee. Simulation results show that this enhanced resource sharing scheme can achieve satisfactory performance in terms of resource utilization ratio and blocking probability.

Abstract:We present a new path protection algorithm, called resource sharing degree constraints (RSDCs), for survivable wavelength-divisionmultiplexing mesh networks. We define a parameter k to adjust the resource sharing degree (RSD). When we compute the reserved backup wavelengths, if the RSD is larger than the value of k, more wavelengths are assigned until the RSD is not greater than the value of k. With respect to previous work, RSDCs, adds a valuable elasticity in resource assignment and is able to determine the appropriate trade-offs between the resource utilization ratio and the protection ability.

Abstract:It has been widely recognized that it is of paramount importance to protect multicast connections against single link failure in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks. In this paper, we introduce a novel consideration when provisioning survivable multicast sessions in WDM mesh networks. This consideration captures the average number of destination nodes that are affected by a single link failure. We propose two routing schemes that efficiently support the new consideration. We demonstrate by simulation the performance of the two routing schemes.

Abstract:In Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical networks, lightpaths are high-capacity all-optical channels. A single fiber failure can lead to the failure of all the lightpaths traversing the fiber and results in significant loss. Therefore, effective survivability mechanisms are needed to minimize the data loss. This paper proposes a dynamic sub-path protection algorithm (DSPP) for multi-granularity traffic in WDM mesh networks. The idea of DSPP is to segment each primary path into several equal-length sub-paths, and to compute their corresponding backup paths under shared risk link groups (SRLG) constraints, respectively. Based on dynamic traffic with different load, the performance of DSPP has been investigated via simulations. The results show that DSPP can make the tradeoffs between the resource utilization and restoration time.

Abstract:Network survivability is becoming more and more important for the plenty of information each single fiber carries. Extra network resources are needed to increase network survivability level. In this paper, we investigate the problem of how to augment the network topology with adding new links and allocate spare capacity to maximize the service restorability against node failures in SDH/SONET mesh networks. A scheme called maximal node-disjoint backup paths provisioning with topology augmentation is proposed to tackle the problem, and another scheme called globally optimized path provisioning with topology augmentation, which allows adjusting the existing working paths of network flows, is investigated to optimize the augmented network globally. Both schemes are formulated as mixed integer linear programming models. Furthermore, heuristic algorithms are investigated to be implemented in software. Three algorithms, i.e., added links searching method, successive maximal survivable routing method, and random sequence routing convergence method, are designed and compared. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the algorithms.
Fast Connection Recovery Against Region Failures with Landmark-Based Source Routing

Abstract:Communication networks are vulnerable to the natural disasters or malicious attacks, which may cause a large area of corruptions and long term disconnection of network services. Such significant outage has become a serious problem today with regard to the stringent reliability requirement of the mission critical applications. In this paper, we focus on fast and effective failure recovery in face of region failures. Rather than rely on the time consuming failure localization, we introduce and evaluate a direct restoration mechanism upon detecting the path failure, which use the geographically distributed intermediate nodes, named “landmarks”, to reestablish the connection through a (near-)shortest detour path. The experimental analysis on randomly generated and realistic network topologies have shown that this approach can achieve high reliability and low stretch in case of region failures, and thus significantly reduce the impact of region failures on network based mission critical services.

Abstract:A large optical network may carry multiple traffic with different grade of services. Several previous papers suggest a preemptive multi-class routing scheme: (1) low grade of services’ primary path can share resources with high grade of services’ backup path; (2) low grade of services can be preempted by high grade of services in case of a failure. However, they just optimize the network resources without considering the high grade of services’ failure state. In this paper, we propose an improved lightpath allocation for grade of services to implement in single-link failure WDM mesh networks. The main advantages are to consider Grade 3 (the highest level) lightpath’s failure state when a link fault happens and to make the best of Grade 1(the lowest level) lightpaths working resources as the backup resources of Grade 3 lightpaths. Compared to the previous work, it can obtain better performances in resource utilization ratio, lightpath establishment and the number of average interrupted lightpaths.

Abstract:Providing differentiated quality-of-protection (QoP) for surviving single-link failures in WDM mesh networks has been extensively studied in recent years. This paper investigates the problem of providing differentiated QoP for surviving arbitrary double-link failures by allowing a connection request to choose from several QoP classes. In this paper, we propose to use three classes, i.e., single shared-path protection (SSPP), single dedicated-path protection (SDPP), and double shared-path protection (DSPP) to provide differentiated QoP. We present two differentiated QoP schemes. Scheme 1 (conventional differentiated QoP) is a natural extension of conventional differentiated QoP for surviving single-link failures, which uses SDPP, SSPP, and SDPP separately to satisfy different QoP requirements. Scheme 2 (shared differentiated QoP) tries to share backup resources between SSPP and SDPP. Simulation results show that our proposed architecture of QoP can satisfy different QoP requirements for surviving double-link failures by making a balance between blocking probability and average QoP. Analytical and numerical results indicate that the proposed differentiated QoP scheme 2 are more efficient in improving not only blocking probability but also average QoP.
