Abstract:A scheme for compensation of dispersion-induced power fading is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The system transmits two modulated laser lights via a wavelength division multiplexer and a wavelength division demultiplexer. By optimizing the power ratio and the phase difference between the two modulated signals, the dispersion-induced power fading can be adequately compensated. A key significance of our approach is that no adjustments are required when the input radio frequency signal scans over a broad bandwidth of 1 to 12 GHz. We successfully demonstrate the compensation of the power fading for both 20- and 30-km fiber links. An improvement of spurious-free dynamic range is also achieved. Abstract:We numerically investigate XPM effect and XPM-induced nonlinear phase noise in both RZ-DPSK and multi-format (RZ-DPSK and RZ-OOK) WDM systems operating at 40 Gbit/s with different dispersion maps. The relative strength of XPM effect and XPM-induced nonlinear phase noise is discussed for both RZ-DPSK and multi-format WDM transmission. With optimum dispersion mapping, XPM and XPM-induced nonlinear phase noise from neighboring channels carrying either OOK or DPSK signals can both be effectively suppressed.

Abstract:We investigate power-dependent phase-matched four-wave mixing (FWM) in wavelength division multiplexing transmission lines, in which positive and negative dispersion fibers are alternately arranged to manage the dispersion and the dispersion slope. The FWM effect shows power-independent phase matching when the channel power is low. However, it is power dependent at high power. The maximum FWM conversion efficiency is shifted away from the zero channel space in the case of power-dependent phase matching. Optimization of the dispersion system for suppression of the FWM effect is determined.

Abstract:High peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is a major drawback of discrete multi-tone (DMT) in peak-power-constraint (PPC) intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical systems. Symmetric clipping operation is a frequently-used and practical method for mitigating the PAPR of the DMT signal. However' clipping noise is inevitably induced by the symmetric clipping operation' thereby deteriorating the system's performance. In this paper, we study the statistical characteristics of the clipping noise in detail. Depending on the statistical characteristics, clipping-noise-cancellation (CNC) algorithms are proposed to mitigate the clipping noise in the clipping DMT systems. Theoretically, the clipping noise can be completely removed using the low-density-parity-check-assisted CNC algorithm (LDPC-assisted CNC algorithm). To verify the superiority of the clipping DMT with the CNC algorithm, we conduct an experiment with a 50 Gb/s DMT system using 10G-class commercial devices for the scenario of PPC passive optical networks. The receiver sensitivity of the clipping DMT system with the CNC algorithm can reach −24 dBm at a 20% soft-decision forward-error-correction limit, which is 2.5 dB higher than that of the DMT system without clipping operation. The clipping operation and the CNC algorithm are added after the original digital signal processing, thereby demonstrating the potential to effectively overcome the drawback in DMT signals and other high-PAPR signals.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate 10 GBaud intensity modulation direct detection pulse amplitude modulation 4 transmission over 48-km single mode fiber (SMF). Look-up table predistortion and chromatic dispersion precompensation are employed to mitigate channel bandwidth constraint and nonlinear impairment. At the receiver side, decision-directed least mean square and cascaded multimodule algorithm are employed to improve the decision precision. By combining these techniques, link budgets of 5.3 and 4 dB are achieved at bit error rate of 1 × 10−3 for the back-to-back case and after transmission over 48-km SMF, respectively.

Abstract:Chromatic dispersion and nonlinear impairments pose challenges in high-capacity optical transmission systems, leading to signal distortions, channel interference and diminished the transmission performances. This paper explores the utilization of dispersion compensating fibers (DCF) using different schemes to mitigate the dispersion that accumulates along the length of a fiber in a 16 × 10 Gbps high-capacity long haul WDM system over a range of 500 km. When different wavelengths of light pulses are transmitted through an optical fiber, they experience varying speeds due to the refractive index's wavelength dependency. As a result, the light pulses become temporally spread out as they travel through the fiber, and this dispersion persists throughout the fiber's length. Considering non-linear effects such as self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM), this paper analyze and compare the three compensation schemes of DCF in a 16 channel WDM system. Moreover the impact of non-linearities based on fiber length are also analyzed and compared. The results are evaluated by comparing metrics such as Q -factor, bit error rate (BER) and eye height. The analysis concludes that the symmetrical compensation scheme of DCF outperforms the pre- and post-compensation scheme. This finding suggests that the symmetrical compensation method offers a promising solution for high-capacity access networks, providing high spectral efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and improved flexibility.

Abstract:In this work, we systematically analyze the impact of three kinds of Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) imbalances, including bias deviation, amplitude mismatch, and differential time skew in intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) links. It is shown that, for power fading limited transmission, the imbalances can be utilized as advantages rather than impairments. Specifically, the bias deviation with single-arm driven mode and amplitude mismatch with differential driven mode can increase the available bandwidth by shifting the frequency of fading notches. Meanwhile, time skew provides another way to avoid fading by shaping the double sideband (DSB) signal into a vestigial sideband (VSB) with an asymmetrical transfer function. In the transmission experiment, 34 Gbaud Nyquist 6/8-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-6/8) signals are used for investigation in a 20 km dispersion-uncompensated standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) link. With the help of a Volterra nonlinear equalizer, all three kinds of imbalances can achieve bit-error rates (BERs) below the 7% and 20% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) thresholds for PAM-6 and PAM-8 signals, respectively. The received power sensitivity is also compared at the back-to-back (BTB) case and after fiber transmission. Both numerical simulation and experimental demonstration confirm that the dispersion-induced power fading can be effectively suppressed with bias, amplitude, or skew imbalance, providing a feasible solution for transmission distance extension of C-band DD links.

Abstract:Novel fixed-pattern phase modulation scheme is proposed to suppress the IFWM-induced ghost pulses in 40Gbps RZ optical transmission systems through destructing the interference of the IFWM components in symmetric patterns. More than 3dBm launch power margin is achieved. It is a cost-effective method to improve the performance of 40Gbps RZ systems due to greater nonlinearity tolerance.

Abstract:Intensity modulation-direct detection (IM/DD) technology is considered a low-cost, high-capacity, and low-latency solution for short-reach optical connection applications such as data center networks (DCNs) and passive optical networks (PONs), but chromatic dispersion (CD) is the main factor limiting transmission distance. The development of silicon photonics technology has greatly reduced the size of optical dispersion compensators (ODCs) and is expected to replace traditional dispersion compensation fibers. In this paper, we demonstrate a compact ODC based on an on-chip chirped waveguide Bragg grating (CWBG) that simultaneously achieves large dispersion and wide bandwidth. On-chip ODC-enabled C-band beyond 200Gbps net data rate PAM4/PAM8 transmission over 30km single-mode fiber (SMF), and optical vestigial sideband (VSB) PAM4 signal transmission over 25km SMF, are demonstrated with simple receiver digital signal processing (DSP) and low latency.

Abstract:A phase shift increasing method (PSIM) is proposed to construct a comb-like dispersion profiled fiber (CDPF) with an optimum-designed dispersion map. Using this CDPF, a 10-GHz, 12-ps pulse generated from an actively mode-locked Er3+-doped fiber ring laser (AML-EDFL) is compressed to 2 ps without a pedestal. The compressed optical pulse source is used in a 40-Gb/s 247-Km optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system with a transmission power penalty of 0.42 dB. Abstract:We propose an upstream PON transmission scheme based on optical carrier suppression at ONU and heterodyne detection at OLT. Simulation results of 25-Gb/s upstream OFDM-PON show a power budget improvement of 8-dB compared to traditional IM-DD scheme. In addition, it is observed that the scheme does not suffer from dispersion-induced power fading in traditional double sideband (DSB) transmission.

Abstract:Polarization mode dispersion is becoming major system impairment in high speed and long distance optical fiber transmission systems. As the bit rate climbs from 10 to 40 Gb/s per wavelength division multiplexed channel and beyond, optical pulses are increasingly distorted by polarization mode dispersion effect. We report on polarization mode dispersion compensation experiments in 10 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s optical communication systems. The polarization mode dispersion compensator used in the experiments is a compact variable differential group delay element base on concatenation via six magneto-optic polarization rotators (Faraday rotators) of six YVO4 birefringence crystals whose lengths decrease in a binary power series. Feedback scheme is used to optimize the performance of polarization mode dispersion compensation, using degree of polarization as the feedback signal. In the experiments in 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s optical transmission systems, eye-diagrams and bit error rate curves of the code sequences before and after polarization mode dispersion compensation are analyzed. The experimental results demonstrate that the polarization mode dispersion effect induced by the polarization mode dispersion emulator is feasibly mitigated. Separate experiment to reshape the 39 ps-pulses distorted by polarization mode dispersion is also carried out. The incident optical pulses with width of 39ps are broadened and distorted by polarization mode dispersion effect and then reshaped by the polarization mode dispersion compensator. The relationship between the feedback signal degree of polarization and differential group delay is also analyzed.

Abstract:Power-fading impairment induced by fiber dispersion and photodiode detection imposes a fundamental limitation on the intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) transmission systems. In this work, we propose a cost-effective pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) signal transmission scheme with power-fading mitigation enabled by Alamouti coding and dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). By interleaving the symbol blocks in the time domain for upper- and lower-arm of the DDMZM, flat end-to-end frequency response can be obtained without spectral nulls after combining the photocurrents at odd and even time slots. For single channel demonstration, we experimentally transmit up to 160Gb/s PAM-4, 140Gb/s PAM-6, and 108Gb/s PAM-8 signals over 80 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with bit-error rates (BERs) below the 20% soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2.0x10(-2). For wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission, 8 lambda x150Gb/s PAM-4 signals spacing at 1(X) GHz can also achieve 80 km reach. Moreover, we compare the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) sensitivity with single sideband (SSB) scheme and evaluate the tolerance of bias deviation in numerical simulation. The proposed Alamouti coding-based scheme provides a hardware-efficient and dispersion-tolerant candidate for high-speed inter-data center interconnect (DCI) applications. Abstract:The growing demand for bandwidth requires the increasing of capacity and reach of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems, and simultaneous reducing of cost per bitxkm. In this report, I will at first introduce the 40 Gbit/s transponder and 40x42.8 Gbit/s WDM long-haul transmission experimental system over standard single mode fiber using all-Raman amplification in our laboratory. By optimizing the chirp of electro-absorption modulation and dispersion compensation, 42.8 Gbit/s NRZ transmission over 1200 km standard single mode fiber was achieved. Then our work about the fiber impairments in Nx40 Gbit/s WDM and polarization-division multiplexing (PDM) system will be reviewed. Also the technique to mitigate the impairment will be described. In particular, Electronic equalization used to overcome the distortion caused by inter-symbol interference (ISI) will be reviewed, and its capability of equalization for intra-channel nonlinearity will be discussed.

Abstract:Using the split-step Fourier method, the nonlinear effects and higher-order dispersion in optical fiber are studied and numerically analyzed. Based on the analysis, the theoretical model of higher-order dispersion compensation with phased modulator is presented, with emphasis on the third-order dispersion. According to the theoretical model, simulation models based on VPItransmission is designed. Finally, experimental schemes are designed, and experiment is finished: 200-fs pulses propagate through a 47-km fiber link, including a 39.8-km SMF (single-mode fiber) and a 6.71-km DCF (dispersion-compensation fiber). In that experiment, the oscillating tails are completely suppressed and the third-order dispersion is successfully compensated with the phase modulator. Moreover, the parameters of modulator are optimized with VPItransmission Modeling.

Abstract:The paper analyses the effects of intra-channel four-wave mixing (IFWM) on the high-speed optical fiber communication system. A new code format is developed with double 0 and double π phase separating 1 code; it can decrease the transmission penalty from fiber nonlinearity by counteracting the perturbation terms of IFWM. From the simulation of transmission of two classic code data “11011” and “11100”, we find that our proposed code format has a better suppression effect than the alternative modulation inversion (AMI) or the normal RZ format and supports a wider pulse mode. In a 40 Gbps system, the AMI format is 2 dB less than the RZ format, and our proposed format is 1 dB less than the AMI format when a 1 dB eye open penalty is taken as a metewand. Moreover, it can be realized as easily as the AMI format.

Abstract:A new dispersion compensation method for high-speed terrestrial cascaded Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical transmission systems is proposed. By means of specially designed dispersion-shifted fiber (SDDSF) with zero dispersion wavelength around 1.6 ��m and dispersion slope S0=0.05ps/km/nm, -2--4ps/km/nm dispersion is generated at 1550 nm to avoid severe four-wave mixing in WDM systems using ITU-T G.653 DSF. The positive dispersion of ITU-T G.652 standard single-mode fiber is utilized to compensate for the negative dispersion of SDDSF over 1530-1570nm (EDFA bandwidth). With this method, dispersion induced eye opening penalty could still be less than 1dB after 1000km fiber transmission in systems with bit-rate higher than 10Gb/s per channel.
