Abstract:Connection reliability is one important service level agreement (SLA) parameter for a customer and should be carefully considered in survivable WDM networks. A sound scheme should guarantee customers' reliability and simultaneously benefit a service provider in resource efficiency. Under the SLA constraints and the assumption of shared risk link group (SRLG) failures, a novel dynamic differentiated shared path-protection algorithm (DDSP) in WDM mesh networks is proposed. Based on the basic ideas of the K-shortest path algorithm and partial SRLGdisjoint protection, DDSP can provide differentiated services for customers according to their SLA parameters while optimizing resource utilization. Simulation results show that DDSP not only can efficiently guarantee the specific SLA requirements of customers, but also can achieve significant performance gain and lead to remarkable reduction in blocking probability.

Abstract:The notion of service level agreements (SLA) has been proposed to capture qualitatively and quantitatively defined performance contracts between service providers and their customers. How to provision satisfiable connections for customers according to their SLA parameters to avoid penalty as well as minimizing cost is one of the main concerns for a service provider. Connection reliability and restoration time are two important SLA parameters for a customer, and should be carefully considered in survivable wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) networks. A sound scheme should guarantee customers' reliability and reduce restoration time while benefiting a service provider in resource efficiency. Under the SLA constraints and the assumption of single link failure, we first investigate a partial link-disjoint protection (PLDP) and analyze its availability and average restoration time. We then propose a dynamic constraint shared path protection (DCSP) algorithm in WDM mesh networks. Based on the basic ideas of the K-shortest path algorithm and PLDP, DCSP can provide differentiated services for customers according to their SLA parameters while being favorable for reducing average restoration time and optimizing resource utilization. Simulation results show that DCSP can efficiently guarantee the specific SLA requirements of customers with a slight increase in the blocking probability while still achieving spare resource sharing and restoration time optimizations.

Abstract:In WDM optical networks, the fiber links may share some common physical resources (e.g., cables, conduits) and the consequence is that they have the Correlated Link Failure Probability (CLFP), which denotes the probability of link l failure after link f fails. Based on CLFP, we propose a new dynamic survivable algorithm, called Differentiated Path Shared Protection (DPSP), to protect the double-link failures in WDM optical networks. In DPSP, each connection request can be assigned one working path and additional backup paths according to the differentiated reliable requirements of users. Abstract:Feature Issue on Next-Generation WDM Network Design and Routing (WDMN). The increasing demand for bandwidth that has resulted from the emergence of various bandwidth-thirsty applications has increased the need for employing WDM as a dominant technology for the next-generation optical internet. As these networks carry gigantic amounts of information, survivability has become a primary and basic need for them. Although the available proactive protection schemes provide a 100% restoration guarantee, they require huge redundancy and usually result in a very high blocking probability. We propose a novel active restoration scheme that restores a failed primary lightpath based on multiple predefined but nonreserved backup paths along the primary path. Extensive simulation results based on three typical test networks indicate that with a small increase in restoration time, our new restoration scheme can reduce the blocking probability and the capacity requirement significantly while guaranteeing a very high restoration probability.

Abstract:Dynamic lightpath protection in survivable WDM networks requires finding a pair of diverse routes (i.e., a primary route and a backup route that are link-disjoint) that form a cycle upon the arrival of a new connection request. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid algorithm for this problem based on a combination of the mobile agents technique and genetic algorithms (GA). By keeping a suitable number of mobile agents in the network to cooperatively explore the network states and continuously report diverse routes into the routing tables, our new hybrid algorithm can promptly determine the first population of cycles for a new request based on the routing table of its source node, without requiring the time consuming process associated with current GA-based lightpath protection schemes. We furthermore improve the performance of our algorithm by introducing a more advanced fitness function. Extensive simulation studies on the ns-2 network simulator show that our hybrid algorithm achieve a significantly lower blocking probability and a smaller execution time than the conventional survivable routing algorithms.

Abstract:The survivable design is a key issue in reliable WDM optical networks to assure the service guarantee to customers. In this paper we propose a novel heuristic dynamic Sub-Path Protection with Hop Constraint routing algorithm (SPP-HC) to provide a more flexible way to compute the sub-paths and the backup paths. Compared with the conventional equal-length sub-path protection metrics, SPP-HC can further improve the resource utilization ratio and reduce the blocking probability. We evaluate the effectiveness of the SPP-HC and the results are found to be promising.

Abstract:The wavelength selective switch-based reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers is a promising switching equipment for future reconfigurable wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks. However, its asymmetric switching property complicates the optimal routing and wavelength assignment problem. In an asymmetric switching scenario, using the classic Dijkstra’s algorithm can lead to invalid paths traversing unconnected ports of an asymmetric node. To solve this problem, we propose both link-state (LS) and distance vector (DV) schemes for dynamic lightpath provisioning in optical WDM mesh networks with asymmetric nodes. The proposed LS schemes include the asymmetric switching-aware (ASA) Dijkstra’s algorithm, the K -shortest path-based algorithm, and the entire path searching (EPS) algorithm. Simulation results show that the ASA-Dijkstra’s algorithm will bring notable improvement of the blocking performance with low computational complexity, while the EPS algorithm has much higher complexity and is not suitable to be employed in large-scale networks. On the other hand, our proposed DV solution, i.e., the information diffusion-based routing (IDBR), can achieve the lowest blocking probability with the lowest computational complexity. Moreover, IDBR does not require the distribution of local asymmetric switching information like the LS schemes, thus having a high level of topology confidentiality.

Abstract:A resource-efficient provisioning framework (RPF) is proposed in this paper for optical networks providing dedicated path protection (DPP) and shared path protection (SPP) services. The framework reduces resource consumption by considering spare capacity reservation of DPP and SPP cooperatively while provides 100% survivability guarantee and maintains the recovery time for both protection types against the predominant single link failures. To tackle the service provisioning problem under the framework, an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation is presented to find the optimal routing solution for a given set of traffic demands. The objective is to minimize total capacities consumed by working and backup paths of all demands. Then, heuristics are developed for on-line routing under dynamic change of traffic. Numerical results show that compared with traditional provisioning framework (TPF), the RPF has the following advantages: (1) Over 10% capacity savings are achieved for static service provisioning; (2) blocking probability of both protection types is greatly reduced; (3) lower resource over build is achieved; and (4) average backup-path hop distance of shared-path-protected flows is reduced. Finally, network survivability in face of double link failures is discussed under the framework.

Abstract:This letter proposes a novel dynamic shared protection algorithm called Multiple Sub-Backup Paths (MSBP) to survive multiple links failures in WDM optical networks. In MSBP, each connection will be first assigned one primary path and one link-disjoint backup path, and following will be assigned multiple sub-backup paths based on the corresponding routing policy. Compared to previous algorithm DLFP, MSBP not only has the close protection ability to the DLFP but also can save significant resources.

Abstract:Under the construction of optical networks, in order to reduce construction cost, several links may pass through a duct. In many cases, fibers fail due to duct failures. It is required to provide protection against duct failures. The paper investigates protection for dynamic multicast traffic against single duct failures. The paper explores two dedicated protection algorithms (SDP-DP, SDS-DP) and a shared protection algorithm (SDS-SDP). Block probabilities of the algorithms are assessed through simulation. Simulation results show that, in most cases, block probability of SDS-SDP is lowest since SDS-SDP shares protecting wavelengths among connection requests. When the network load is light, SDP-DP has lowest block probability.

Abstract:This paper studies quantitatively the benefit of startup-failure-driven backup path reprovisioning in terms of connection availability in shared-path-protected optical networks. Numerical results show that shared path protection with startup-failure-driven reprovisioning reduces connection unavailability, and is most efficient when the capacity utilization during the no-failure phases is around 60%.

A Shared Sub-path Protection for a Single-SRLG Failure in Survivable WDM Networks

Abstract:This paper proposes an algorithm, called Dynamic Shared Sub-Path Protection (DSSPP), for protecting a single Shared Risk Link Group (SRLG) failure in survivable WDM mesh networks. DSSPP firstly searches a primary path for a connection request, and it follows to segment the primary path into several equal length sub-paths according to the m, where the m is the length of the sub-path, and searches a SRLG-disjoint backup path for each sub-path. If two sub-paths are SRLG-disjoint, then their corresponding backup paths can share the common resources. When computing paths, DSSPP considers the load balance and the resources sharing degree, so that the paths are the minimum cost, and the resource utilization ratio can be improved and the blocking ratio can be reduced. The simulation results show that DSSPP not only can completely protect a single-SRLG failure but also can make the trade-offs between the resource utilization ratio (or blocking ratio) and the protection-switching time.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors focus on studying the problem of survivable routing provisioning to prevent single link failure in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks, and propose a novel protection scheme called mixed shared path protection (MSPP). With MSPP, the authors define three types of resources: 1) primary resources that can be used by primary paths; 2) spare resources that can be shared by backup paths; and 3) mixed resources that can be shared by both the primary and the backup paths. In the proposed protection scheme, each connection is assigned a primary path and a link disjoint backup path. Differing from pervious protection schemes, MSPP allows some primary paths and backup paths to share the common mixed resources if the corresponding constraints can be satisfied. In this paper, the authors consider three types of path-based protection schemes, i.e., dedicated path protection (DPP), shared path protection (SPP), and MSPP, and evaluate their performance for both the static and the dynamic provisioning problems. Abstract:Optical fiber networks have become the foundations of communication system to provide enormous transmission capacity with less cost. Connection blocking is an inherent attribute and influences optical networks' performance, especially in multi-domain network scenarios. We analyze the reason and effect of blockings including routing blockings and signaling blockings. We regard the cause of signaling blockings as the information asynchronization in resource reservation process. We define the concept of Information Asynchronization Period to describe the effect of signaling blockings. To reduce signaling blockings in end-to-end optical path provisioning for multi-domain scenarios, we propose a novel network routing and control scheme, named Intra-Domain Immediate Reroute based Semi-Proactive Hierarchical Path Computation Element (IDIRSP H-PCE). The proposed routing and control scheme mainly consists of two parts, Semi-Proactive routing and Intra-Domain Immediate Reroute mechanism. Dynamic network simulations verify our proposed scheme. We compare the network performance with Reactive Backward Recursive PCE-based Computation (BRPC) based PCE, Reactive H-PCE and Proactive H-PCE. Simulation results indicate that IDIRSP H-PCE can provide connection with a very low blocking probability in light load case, which is close to Proactive H-PCE, and obviously better than BRPC based Reactive PCE and Reactive H-PCE. For heavy load case, IDIRSP H-PCE has a remarkably lower blocking probability than other three methods. Moreover, we test our proposed routing and control scheme when facing link faults. Simulation results indicate that IDIRSP H-PCE can greatly improve the traffic access rate and optimize the network performance.
Dynamic preemptive multi-class routing scheme under dynamic traffic in survivable WDM mesh networks

Abstract:A large-scale optical network will carry various traffic classes with different fault-tolerance requirements. Several previous papers suggest a preemptive multi-class routing scheme. They have proposed Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulations to implement this routing scheme and simulate it under the assumption that the traffic holding on the network will not depart. However, in the real world, most of the traffic is the dynamic traffic: the traffic holding on the network will leave at the end of connection holding time. In this paper, we propose a detailed algorithm for Dynamic Preemptive Multi-class Routing (DPMR) scheme under dynamic traffic pattern. Furthermore, we compare DPMR scheme with DPP (Dedicated Path Protection) and SPP (Shared Path Protection), and evaluate their performances from resource utilization ratio and blocking probability. In addition, we propose a modified link cost function for Dynamic Preemptive Multi-class Routing scheme to find the routes.

Abstract:This paper addresses the protection problem in WDM optical networks and presents a New Shared-risk link groups (SRLG)-Disjoint Path Provisioning (NSDPP) approach with shared protection to tolerate the single-risk failure. Comparing to previous Shared-risk link groups (SRLG)-Disjoint Path Provisioning (SDPP) approach, NSDPP is able to obtain better performance, because in NSDPP some primary path and backup paths of other primary paths can share the common resources if the corresponding rules can be satisfied. Simulation results are shown to be promising.
