Abstract:In this paper, we first analyzed the nano-magnetic fluid composition and properties. Then we studied the characteristics of nano-magnetic fluid magnetization and magnetization mechanism. In addition, we also studied the nano-Fe3O4 magnetic particle size and surface modification on the magnetic properties of magnetic fluids. Nano-magnetic fluid is a new type of liquid nano-composite functional material. It also has a magnetic and mobility, and therefore it has many unique properties and a wide range of applications. Nano-magnetic fluid magnetization characteristic is one of its main properties, its performance and application of magnetic fluid play a decisive role.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid or called ferro-fluid is such kind of magnetic nanomaterials, which is stable of solid-liquid two phase colloidal solution composited by magnetic nanoparticles coated by surfactant and highly disperse in a carrier liquid. The basis of magnetic fluid widely applied mainly is due to their unique magnetic properties and rheological properties, which enable its action as intelligent control materials in the magnetic field so as to achieve the goal of magnetic liquid dynamic seal, magnetic damping vibration and so on. In our recent research, the water-based magnetic fluid was synthesized using a co-precipitation method and its magnetorheological properties were studied. During the process, the magnetorheological properties of stable water-based magnetic fluids were determined by magnetic rheometer. The results show that the shear-thinning behavior of magnetic fluids was observed both in the absence and presence of magnetic field. However, there was a remarkable magnetoviscous effect with magnetic field function and the unexpected variation of shear stress was related to the chain aggregation. Furthermore, the constitutive equation of water-based magnetic fluid at a low magnetic field was discussed.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid is a new popular functional material, which is a new kind of stable colloid. The optical properties of the magnetic fluids have been studied widely by experiments. The theoretical research, however, on the microstructure and transmission characteristics of magnetic fluids is still ongoing. In this paper the Monte Carlo method was adopted to construct the model of the magnetic fluid and to simulate the microstructure and the transmission of the magnetic fluids film. The experimental setup to record the microstructure of the magnetic fluid was especially designed with a water-cooling system, which could ensure that the environmental temperature would not vary when the magnetic field was applied. Theoretical simulations and experiments of the magnetic fluid films with thicknesses of 8μm and 10μm under an external magnetic field of different strength were carried out. The experimental results indicated that the proposed method in this paper was feasible and could be well used in the study for optical properties of the magnetic fluids.

Abstract:Magnetic fluids were historically the first active nano-dispersion material. Despite over half a century of research, interest in these nano-objects continues to grow every year. This is due to the impressive development of nanotechnology, the synthesis of nanoscale structures, and surface-active systems. The unique combination of fluidity and magnetic response allows magnetic fluids to be used in engineering devices and biomedical applications. In this review, experimental results and fundamental theoretical approaches are systematized to predict the micro- and macroscopic behavior of magnetic fluid systems under different external influences. The article serves as working material for both experienced scientists in the field of magnetic fluids and novice specialists who are just beginning to investigate this topic.

Study of acoustic nonlinearity parameter B/A for magnetic fluids

Abstract:The acoustic nonlinearity parameter B/A values of water-based and diphthalate-based magnetic fluids were measured with the change of concentration and temperature. The results showed that the B/A values of magnetic fluids increase linearly with increasing concentration of magnetic particles and increase linearly as temperature increases. The velocities of ultrasonic wave in magnetic fluids were also accurately measured.

Abstract:A numerical method to study the optical feature of the magnetic fluid films is developed with the Monte Carlo method based on the simulated microstructures, which tracks the spread process of ray transmitting through the magnetic fluid film and computes the spectral transmittivity of the magnetic film. Some factors of affecting the spectral transmittivity of magnetic fluid film are investigated, such as the film thickness, the concentration and diameter of magnetic nanoparticles, and strength of externally applied magnetic field.

Abstract:Abstract The density of magnetic fluid is important for some applications such as mineral processing. Magnetic fluid is a nano-sized magnetic material which has superparamagnetism. The density of magnetic fluid with no magnetic field was introduced. The measuring method was studied and the calculating formula was deduced. Since magnetic fluid could be magnetized, it could be controlled by magnetic field. The density of magnetic fluid could be changed by magnetic field. The buoyancy of magnetic fluid in magnetic field was researched and it was concluded that the buoyancy force of magnetic fluid in magnetic field is related to the mass, the volume, the permeability, the magnetization of magnetic fluid and the gradient of magnetic field. For a certain magnetic fluid, the parameters of itself are fixed. Then the gradient of magnetic field is the mainly factor influencing the magnetic force. A density measuring method for magnetic fluid in magnetic field was introduced. A mineral separation device based on magnetic fluid was introduced. And the principle of the mineral separation device with magnetic fluid was studied. More kinds of magnetic fluid and applications could be explored by researching magnetic fluid.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid is a field-responsive intelligent fluid, which has the flow characteristics of liquid and the elastic properties of solid. Because of its unique properties, it has a strong application prospect in the fields of magnetic soft robot, intelligent sensor, and so on. Dynamic viscoelasticity is a significant index to investigate the performance of magnetic fluid in the application process. In this paper, the dynamic viscoelasticity of a homemade mineral oil-based magnetic fluid was investigated under oscillatory shear experimental conditions using an MCR302 rheometer, and the effects of different temperatures and magnetic fields on the dynamic viscoelasticity were examined. Amplitude sweeps tests showed that the value of the storage modulus remained constant within the linear viscoelastic region (LVE) and the stable structure was not destroyed. As the magnetic field strength increased or the temperature increased, the range of the linear viscoelastic zone decreased. At large amplitude, the loss modulus will first appear as a peak and then decrease. The frequency sweep experiment showed that the storage modulus and loss modulus increased with the increase in angular frequency, and the greater the magnetic field intensity, the longer the internal structure relaxation time. When the magnetic field was constant, the higher the temperature, the smaller the storage modulus and loss modulus of the magnetic fluid. At high temperature, the loss coefficient of mesmeric fluid was large, and the magnetic fluid was more viscous. The lower the temperature is, the smaller the loss coefficient of the magnetic fluid is, and the magnetic fluid is more pliant. The study of dynamic viscoelasticity of magnetic fluids lays the foundation for establishing the complete structure intrinsic relationship of magnetic fluids and provides guidance for the application of magnetic fluids in magnetic 3D printing, droplet robot, and smart wear.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetic fluid is a liquid nano-size magnetic material which has unique properties such as flowability, paramagnetism, and magnetic permeability. The composition of magnetic fluid was introduced. The preparation devices were collected and listed. The preparation of magnetic particles was made by chemical coprecipitation. The particles were coated with surfactant in the experiment. Then the coated particles were added in the base carrier fluid according to the procedure of preparation. Magnetic fluid was prepared by chemical coprecipitation. The parameters of magnetic fluid were measured for kinds of engineering applications. The magnetism of magnetic fluid is one of the most important parameters, which was measured and displayed. The saturated magnetism should be increased for more applications.

Abstract:Experimental investigations are carried out to measure the viscosity and the thermal conductivity of the aqueous magnetic fluids in either the absence or the presence of the external magnetic field. The effects of the volume fraction of the suspended magnetic particles, concentration of surfactants and the external magnetic field strength as well as its orientation on the transport properties of the magnetic fluid are analyzed. The experimental results show that the viscosity of the sample magnetic fluids increases with the percentages of the suspended magnetic particles and the surfactants. The viscosity first increases with the magnetic field and finally approaches a constant as the magnetization of the magnetic fluid arrives at a saturation state. For the same magnetic fluid, the viscosity in the magnetic field being perpendicular to the flow direction is bigger than that in the parallel field under the same magnetic field. The thermal conductivity of the sample magnetic fluids is larger than that of pure fluids in both the absence and presence of the external magnetic field. Almost no change in the thermal conductivity of the sample magnetic fluid is found in the magnetic field perpendicular to the temperature gradient. The thermal conductivity of the magnetic fluid increases with the strength of the applied magnetic field being parallel to the temperature gradient.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid has a higher thermal conductivity and heat transfer performance than the conventional heat transfer fluid.As a heat transfer medium,the flow and heat transfer process of magnetic fluid can be controlled by the magnetic field.Therefore,it provides new opportunities to enhance heat transfer,and makes many researchers study the heat transfer characteristics of magnetic fluid.This article presents recent investigations in this field with the aim of summari-zing the experimental methods about measuring the thermal conductivity and convective heat transfer,and identifying the influences of different particles parameters,temperature,magnetic field and other factors on the heat transfer characteristics.Firstly,this paper states the findings of thermal conductivity of magnetic fluid in the absence or presence of magnetic field,and con-cludes the mechanisms of enhancing thermal conductivity.Secondly,it describes the research progress of convective heat transfer in experimental and numerical aspects.Finally,it draws fur-ther working directions of researching heat transfer characteristics of magnetic fluid,and the po-tential application in the enhancement of heat transfer and heat transfer equipments.

Abstract:Magnetic fluids are the suspensions composed of magnetic nanoparticles,surfactants,and non-magnetic carrier liquids.Magnetic fluids are widely used in various fields,especially in sealing,because of their excellent features,including rapid magnetic response,flexible flow ability,tunable magneto-viscous effect,and reliable self-repairing capability.Here,we provide an in-depth,comprehensive insight into the theoretical analyses and diverse applications of magnetic fluids in sealing from three categories:static sealing,rotary sealing,and reciprocating sealing.We summarize the magnetic fluid sealing mechanisms and the development of magnetic fluid seals from 1960s to the present,particularly focusing on the recent progress of magnetic fluid seals.Although magnetic fluid sealing technology has been commercialized and industrialized,many difficulties still exist in its applications.At the end of the review,the present challenges and future prospects in the progress of magnetic fluid seals are also outlined.

Abstract:This paper first discussed on nano-magnetic fluid from the concept, composition and performance. And then it focused on the stability of the mechanism of magnetic fluid. The research aims to improve the stability of magnetic fluids, the most important thing is reducing the size of magnetic particles, and make full use of surface-active agent role. In the magnetic fluid, when the magnetic particle size decreases, the Brownian motion intensified gravity decreases. Under certain conditions they can reach sedimentation equilibrium, thus reducing the particle size is to improve the stability of magnetic fluids powerful tool. Abstract:In order to expand the range of applications of magnetic fluid, water-based magnetic fluid with different surfactants is synthesized and the property of fluidity has been intensively studied. Three kinds of surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate, oleic acid and polyethylene glycol) are used to synthesize three different magnetic fluids with the same magnetic nanoparticles and carrier liquid. Their microstructures and thermal stability of magnetic nanoparticles coated with different surfactants are characterized by transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Results show that water-based magnetic fluid with sodium dodecyl sulfate agglomerates more obviously while magnetic fluid with polyethylene glycol keeps good dispersion. In addition, magnetic measurements reveal that all these magnetic fluids exhibit typical superparamagnetic behavior and the magnetic fluid using polyethylene glycol as surfactant maintains the specific saturation magnetization of similar to 60 emu g(-1). What is more, shear stress and viscosity of these three magnetic fluids are measured by the rotational rheometer. The shear stress increases with the increasing shear rate while the viscosity decreases with the increasing shear rate. This indicates that water-based magnetic fluid has the property of pseudoplastic fluid. What is more, the viscosity of the magnetic fluid with polyethylene glycol as surfactant is lower than other two magnetic fluids and is prone to reach a steady state at a low shear rate in a short time.

Abstract:This paper first prepared a water-based magnetic fluid using a chemical co-precipitation method and conducted a detailed characterization and calculation of its important magnetization properties. Key parameters for analyzing the influence mechanism on the rheological properties of the water-based magnetic fluid were obtained. Subsequently, the impact of different magnetic field and shear rates on the magnetoviscous effect, shear-thinning behavior, and yield stress of the water-based magnetic fluid was studied through steady rotation measurements. The results showed a positive correlation between viscosity, shear stress, and yield stress with the magnetic field. Additionally, we also provide theoretical prediction formulas for the magnetoviscous effect based on the influence of microstructures formed by solid-phase magnetic particles in the magnetic field. The dimensionless Mason number was used to establish the scaling law relationship between viscosity measurements and theoretical values, with results showing good agreement between measured and theoretical values. The Herschel–Bulkley model and the Casson model were employed to obtain the dynamic yield stress values of the sample, and a quadratic linear increase relationship between yield stress and magnetic field was derived. These research findings provide important references for a deeper understanding of the physical and chemical properties of water-based magnetic fluid and for optimizing its application.

Abstract:A novel material—magnetic fluid which is a functional magnetic material in the world is introduced. The production methods are introduced and the process of the chemical co-precipitation method is presented. The physical characteristic such as the density, viscosity, and magnetism of kerosene based magnetic fluid is studied. The experiments verify that the viscosity increases with the increasing of the density of magnetic fluid. The saturation magnetization intensity first increases and then reduces with the surfactant increasing.

Abstract:The physical properties of magnetic liquids are theoretically analyzed in this paper, such as the effect of the magnetic volume force on the free surface of magnetic liquids, the density spectrum of the magnetic liquids based on horizontal component of the magnetic volume force, the first order levitation principle and the second order levitation principle, the magneto-electric principle of magnetic liquids, the fluidity of magnetic liquids used as magnetic core and the fluxgate effect of magnetic liquids. Some methods to study the properties of magnetic liquids were provided by the authors, and the effects of the magnetic volume force on the free surface of magnetic liquids and the second order levitation effect were experimentally studied in this paper. The analysis methods that provided in this paper may be applied to the design of new sensors.
