Abstract:An ophiolite sequences was found in the western segment of the Guoganjianian Mountain in the middle part of the Qiangtang, Tibet. It consists of the meta- peridotite, cumulate gabbro, gabbro dike swarms, basalt and sillcalite. The geochemical characteristics from the cumulate gabbro samples indicate that the rocks belong to the MORB. The SHRIMP U-Pb dating from same sample gives a concordant age of 438 ± 11 Ma. Those results indicate that the Eopaleozoic ophiolite sequence at first time was found in the Qiangtang area or Southern part of the Qiangtang of Tibet Plateau. The results from this study together with the data from Permian ophiolite sequences in the Jiaomuri area, Devonian Famennian and Permian to Triassic Radiolarian-sillcalite in the western of Shuanghu, we suggest that the Paleo-Tethys Ocean in the middle of the Qiangtang was formed at eopaleozoic and kept accretion until Triassic. The new results also require us re-thinking about the geological evolution and tectonic history of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean in the Qiangtang of Tibet Plateau.
