Abstract:A pot experiment was carried out to study the effect of nitrogen on the stomatal characteristics of canopy leaves of summer maize with different plant types. The nitrogen fertilizations were divided into 0, 0.15 and 0.30 g (N)·kg-1 (soil). The results showed that stomatal density descended significantly after applying nitrogen, but ascended with the increasing of nitrogen applying. Compared with the control, stomatal length, width and areas descended significantly. Stomatal characteristics of compact conformation 'Shandan 902' were significantly greater than other varieties. Comparing the different layer leaves at different nitrogen levels, stomata density of up-layer leaves was larger than middle-layer and low-layer leaves, but there was no universal rule of stomatal length, width and areas.
