Abstract:Pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensors can detect human body motion within a fairly reasonable distance by heat emission. PIR sensors have been used for a wide range of applications such as intruder detection, light actuator due to its low cost and low power consumption. Human body movement characteristic extraction for a walking person is investigated in this paper using a PIR sensor. Each person acts as a distributed infrared source that is determined by the body shape and walking gait of the person. In our study, temporal voltage signals collected by a PIR sensor with coded Fresnel lens arrays were analyzed using spectral techniques to extract the motion features of the individual. We employed principal component analysis (PCA) method to cluster data with respect to different objects at different speed levels, and explored the feasibility of using this method to extract the motion features of individuals for identification. The experimental results display that the spectral distinctions among different persons walking at different speeds are sufficiently discriminatory for classification identification, and the proposed method is also a low-cost human body identification system scheme in some low-security applications.
