Abstract:The fractional Fourier express of the first-order optical system was derived by decomposing the transfer matrices of first-order optical system into coordinate rotation matrix,scale matrix and chirp matrix in Wigner phase space.The results show that an arbitrary first-order optical system can be expressed as the scaled and chirp modulation fractional Fourier transform.The transfer matrix and diffractive integral formula in frequency domain were acquired by rotating the input and output optical field π/2 in the phase space.Accordingly the fractional Fourier transforms of a first-order optical system in frequency domain were also obtained.By comparing the transfer matrices of two first-order optical systems in space and frequency domains respectively, it is found that the two first-order optical systems in different domain can be expressed as two different expressions of one and the same transfer based on different coordinates.At last the condition is derived for an optical system to implement the fractional Fourier transform in space and frequency domains with the same order.

Abstract:The new fractional Fourier transform, proposed by Shih [Optics Comm. 118 (1995) 495], is shown to differ from the conventional fractional Fourier transform by its four periodic eigenvalues with respect to the order of Hermite-Gaussian functions. Simulations demonstrate that the Hermite-Gaussian superposition algorithm is still valid for this new transform. We also propose a general fractionalization procedure which includes these two definitions as two limits.

Abstract:The optical structures for implementation of the fractional Fourier transform were analyzed based on the theory of impulse response functions of the lens combination optical system, and the meaning of the standard focal length was discussed. Several general optical setups were provided. By using these setups, the standard focal length can be adjusted easily. It will be significant for designing a spatially, variant filtering system with multiple cascaded optical fractional Fourier transformers. The experimental results performed by a single lens or double lenses are also given.

Abstract:By a quantum mechanical analysis of the additive rule F α[F β[f]]=F α+β[f], which the fractional Fourier transformation (FrFT) F α[f] should satisfy, we reveal that the position-momentum mutual-transformation operator is the core element for constructing the integration kernel of FrFT. Based on this observation and the two mutually conjugate entangled-state representations, we then derive a core operator for enabling a complex fractional Fourier transformation (CFrFT), which also obeys the additive rule. In a similar manner, we also reveal the fractional transformation property for a type of Fresnel operator.

Abstract:We find that the mapping from classical optical transformations to the optical operator method can be realized by using the coherent state representation and the technique of integration within an ordered product of operators. The optical Fresnel operator derived in (Commun. Theor. Phys. (Beijing, China) 38 (2002) 147) can unify those frequently used optical operators. Various decompositions of Fresnel operator into the exponential canonical operators are obtained.

Abstract:In a recent paper of Optics Letter (Fan Hongyi and Lu Hailiang, Optics Letters 28(2003) 680) the complex fractional Fourier transform (CFFRT) is introduced, which is different from the usual two-dimensional real fractional Fourier transforms. In the present work we illuminate its definition from the point of view of rotation of the complex form of Wigner distributions as well as from the view of optical propagation mechanism in graded-index medium. The newly constructed quantum mechanical entangled state representations are used to link CFFRT to the Wigner distributions.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to find out the operator for generating fractional Fourier transform in Hermitian polynomial theory with the operator as the argument, and to incorporate fractional Fourier transform into quantum theory. The role of coordinate-momentum exchanging operator is explored in playing FFrT's addition rule. In the whole derivation the generalized generating function formula of operator Hermitian polynomials and the integration method within ordered product of operators are used. The core of operator Hermite polynomial theory is the operator identity H (Q)=:(2Q), which turns the operator of complex special function into power series in normal ordering, as a result, this greatly simplifies calculations.

Abstract:Some developments on fractional Fourier optics are reported in this paper. First, a thick lens can be regarded as a fractional Fourier transformer. Second, relations between the Collins formulae and the fractional Fourier transform or fractional Hankel transform are bridged, we show that the Collins formulae in spatial domain or in spatial-frequency domain can be described by the fractional Fourier transform or fractional Hankel transform. Third, connections between the multi-element resonators and the scaled fractional Fourier transforms are established, it is shown that there exists twice scaled fractional Fourier transform for beams in completing one round trip, the beam oscillation in resonator can be viewed as a process of consecutive implementing scaled fractional Fourier transform. Finally, some extensions of the fractional Fourier transforms to misaligned optical systems are simply reviewed.

Abstract:We propose a complete way to fractionalize Fourier transform. This fractionalization can perfectly extend the fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) defined in [C.C. Shih, Opt. Commun. 118 (1995) 495] to the original one in [V. Namias, J. Inst. Math. Appl. 25 (1980) 241]. The new FRFT proposed in this paper can have any integer M(⩾3)-periodic eigenvalues not only with respect to the order of Hermite–Gaussian functions but also to the order of the transform, and it will be reduced to the FRFT in [Namias, loc. cit.; Shih, loc. cit.; S. Liu, J. Jiang, Y. Zhang, J. Zhang, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 30 (1997) 973] at the three limits with M=+∞, M=4, M=4k (k is a natural number), respectively.

Abstract:By converting the triangular functions in the integration kernel of the fractional Fourier transformation to the hyperbolic function, i.e., tan alpha --> tanh alpha, sin alpha --> sinh alpha, we find the quantum mechanical fractional squeezing transformation (FrST) which satisfies additivity. By virtue of the integration technique within the ordered product of operators (IWOP) we derive the unitary operator responsible for the FrST, which is composite and is made of e(i pi a dagger a/2) and exp [i alpha/2 (a(2) + a(dagger 2))]. The FrST may be implemented in combinations of quadratic nonlinear crystals with different phase mismatches.

Abstract:By establishing the relation between the optical scaled fractional Fourier transform (FFT) and quantum mechanical squeezing-rotating operator transform, we employ the bipartite entangled state representation of two-mode squeezing operator to extend the scaled FFT to more general cases, such as scaled complex FFT and entangled scaled FFT. The additivity and eigenmodes are presented in quantum version. The relation between the scaled FFT and squeezing-rotating Wigner operator is studied.

Abstract:The fractional transforms are a class of powerful tool for the presentation of time–frequency domains in the field of signal processing. Based on the convolution algorithm of discrete fractional Fourier transform and gyrator transform, we propose a generalized framework defining a class of fractional transforms. By choosing various phase filters, the fractional transform can be employed for different computational tasks of information processing. The several properties of typical fractional transform are reserved in this definition scheme. Under the model of the convolution-based transform, fractional Fourier transform and gyrator transform are synthesized. Moreover, the transform can be implemented by an optical 4f system with phase-only filtering easily, which is a useful tool in the application of optical information processing. Numerical results are given for demonstrating the proposed transform and its application.

Abstract:Based on the misaligned diffraction integral formula for misaligned optical systems, the diffraction for misaligned Lohmann's fractional Fourier transformation system and quasi-asymmetrically inhomogeneous medium are analysed, respectively. It is found that there exist similar expressions of misaligned diffraction integral formula and they are essentially equivalent. And also, a new concept of misaligned fractional Fourier transform is put forward.

Abstract:Traditional operational calculus, while intuitive and effective in addressing problems in physical fractal spaces, often lacks the rigorous mathematical foundation needed for fractional operations, sometimes resulting in inconsistent outcomes. To address these challenges, we have developed a universal framework for defining the fractional calculus operators using the generalized fractional calculus with the Sonine kernel. In this framework, we prove that the α-th power of a differential operator corresponds precisely to the α-th fractional derivative, ensuring both accuracy and consistency. The relationship between the fractional power operators and fractional calculus is not arbitrary, it must be determined by the specific operator form and the initial conditions. Furthermore, we provide operator representations of commonly used fractional derivatives and illustrate their applications with examples of fractional power operators in physical fractal spaces. A superposition principle is also introduced to simplify fractional differential equations with non-integer exponents by transforming them into zero-initial-condition problems. This framework offers new insights into the commutative properties of fractional calculus operators and their relevance in the study of fractal structures.

Abstract:The fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) has multiplicity, which is intrinsic in fractional operator. A new source for the multiplicity of the weight-type fractional Fourier transform (WFRFT) is proposed, which can generalize the weight coefficients of WFRFT to contain two vector parameters \(\mathfrak{M},\mathfrak{N} \in \mathbb{Z}^M \). Therefore a generalized fractional Fourier transform can be defined, which is denoted by the multiple-parameter fractional Fourier transform (MPFRFT). It enlarges the multiplicity of the FRFT, which not only includes the conventional FRFT and general multi-fractional Fourier transform as special cases, but also introduces new fractional Fourier transforms. It provides a unified framework for the FRFT, and the method is also available for fractionalizing other linear operators. In addition, numerical simulations of the MPFRFT on the Hermite-Gaussian and rectangular functions have been performed as a simple application of MPFRFT to signal processing.

Abstract:The fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) has been shown to be a powerful analyzing tool in signal processing. Many properties of this transform have been currently derived as counterparts to the corresponding properties of the Fourier transform (FT), including the theory of the linear fractional shift invariant (LFSI) systems. However, the LFSI systems, which are derived as extensions of the linear time invariant (LTI) systems, available in the literature do not generalize very nicely the LTI systems, which state that the output of a LTI system does not depend on the particular time the input is applied, and the FT of the output is the product of the transfer function and the FT of the input in the Fourier domain. In this paper, we propose a new LFSI system structure associated with the FRFT, and the LTI systems are noted as special cases. The eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the new LFSI systems are presented. Moreover, the conditions for distortionless transmission in the fractional Fourier domain and basic properties of the ideal fractional filter are derived. Some applications of the achieved results are also discussed.
