Abstract:Objective: To investigate the possibility of self-therapy for the treatment of primary premature ejaculation, we compared the efficacy of sertraline taken as needed with that of continuous medication. Methods: This was an open-label study. Efficacy included (a)intravaginal ejaculation latency time and(b) patient and partner satisfaction. Results: Among the 81, the mean ejaculation latency was (0.08±0.5)minutes before treatment (6.5±4.3) minutes after 2 weeks of 50 mg daily, (5.7±2.8)minutes after 2 weeks of 50 or 100 mg PRN, and (4.1±1.6) minutes after 4 weeks of 50 or 100 mg PRN. Mean sexual satisfaction scores for men were (0.47±0.8) before treatment, (3.8±1.4)after 2 weeks of 50 mg daily, (3.2±1.3)after 2 weeks of 50 or 100 mg PRN, and 3.0±1.8 after 4 weeks of 50 or 100 mg PRN. For their partners, mean sexual satisfaction scores were (0.38±0.21) before treatment, (3.3±1.6) after 2 weeks of 50 mg daily, (3.0±1.7)after 2 weeks of 50 or 100 mg PRN, and (2.9±1.4) after 4 weeks of 50 or 100 mg PRN. Conclusion: If our results are supported by additional long-term clinical studies, self-therapy with sertraline taken PRN for the treatment of primary premature ejaculation may offer an attractive option.
