Abstract:Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection may contribute to the development of various gastrointestinal diseases, thyroiditis, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, and coronary arteriosclerotic heart disease. Antigen homology exists between flagellum of H. pylori and spermatozoa, and cross reaction may occur between antibody to flagellum of H. pylori and spermatozoa, thus it may interfere with the fertility of women. Aims: To explore the effects of H. pylori infection on female infertility. Methods: Forty female infertility patients and 50 normal controls were examined by 13C-urea breath test (UBT) and serum H. pylori IgG for H. pylori infection. H. pylori IgG in follicular fluid and antisperm antibodies (AsAb) IgG, AsAb IgM in serum, follicular fluid and mucus of cervix uteri were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in fertility patients. Results: The positivity rates of H. pylori infection in infertile group and control group were 52.5% and 30.0%, respectively (P<0.05). The positivity rate of H. pylori IgG in follicular fluid in H. pylori-positive infertility patients was 90.5%, significantly higher than that in H. pylori-negative ones (5.3%, P<0.01). The positivity rates of AsAb IgG and AsAb IgM in serum, follicular fluid and mucus of cervix uteri of H. pylori infected infertility patients were significantly higher than those without H. pylori infection (P<0.05). Conclusions: There is some association between H. pylori infection and female infertility and H. pylori infection may be one of the causes of female infertility.
