Abstract:Extracellular matrix (ECM) derived from decellularized tissues and organs has been used as a biological scaffold in a variety of pre-clinical and clinical applications. However, the lack of mechanical properties and shape controllability is a drawback. In contrast, synthetic polymers can be easily engineered with good mechanical performance, but they have limited biological functionality. In this study, we explored a new method to electrospun cartilage-derived extracellular matrix (cECM) and polycaprolactone (PCL) composite nanofibrous membranes. The cartilage is a compact tissue for which electrospinning is difficult. To overcome this problem, the cartilage was sliced into pieces, milled into powders, and digested into a looser structure. The cECM/PCL (mass ratio 50:50) hybrid nanofibers appeared to be smooth, thinner, and uniform with enhanced mechanical properties and wettability compared to the electrospun PCL. Meanwhile, the presence of cECM in the cECM/PCL nanofibrous membranes significantly promoted chondrocyte proliferation in vitro and facilitated cartilage regeneration in vivo. All these results indicate that the cECM/PCL nanofibrous membranes fabricated with good mechanical properties and biocompatibility may represent a promising scaffold for cartilage regeneration. Moreover, this work may offer a convenient and cost-effective method to synthesize ECM-based hybrid nanofibrous scaffolds for other tissue applications.
Reinforcement Of A Porous Collagen Scaffold With Surface-Activated Pla Fibers

Abstract:A hybrid porous collagen scaffold mechanically reinforced with surface-activated poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fiber was prepared. PLA fibers, 20 mu m in diameter and 1 mm in length, were aminolyzed with hexanediamine to introduce free amino groups on the surfaces. After the amino groups were transferred to aldehyde groups by treatment with glutaraldehyde, different amounts (1.5, 3, 5 and 8 mg) of surface-activated PLA fibers were homogeneously mixed with 2 ml type-I collagen solution (pH 2.8, 0.6 wt%). This mixture solution was then freeze-dried and cross-linked to obtain collagen sponges with surface-activated PLA fiber. Scanning electron microscopy observation indicated that the collagen sponges had a highly interconnected porous structure with an average pore size of 170 mu m, irrespective of PLA fiber incorporation. The dispersion of surface-activated PLA fibers was homogeneous in collagen sponge, in contrast to unactivated PLA fibers. The compression modulus test results showed that, compared with unactivated PLA fibers, the surface-activated PLA fibers enhanced the resistance of collagen sponge to compression more significantly. Cytotoxicity assay by MTT test showed no cytotoxicity of these collagen sponges. L929 mouse fibroblast cell-culture studies in vitro revealed that the number of L929 cells attached to the collagen sponge with surface-activated PLA fibers, both 6 h and 24 h after seeding, was higher than that in pure collagen sponge and sponge with unactivated PLA fibers. In addition, a better distribution of cells infiltrated in collagen sponge with surface-activated PLA fibers was observed by histological staining. Abstract:Objective Porous collagen sponges were reinforced using surface activated PLA fibers to prepare scaffold materials with im-proved mechanical properties for tissue engineering.Method The activated PLA fiber were obtained by successive treatment of PLA fiber with hexanediamine and glutaraldehyde to introduce the aldehyde groups on the surface of PLA fiber.The treated fibers were mixed with collagen solution,frozen-dried,and crosslinked to obtain the reinforced porous collagen sponge.Result The evaluation results showed that the scaffold materials had no cytotoxicity.The improved mechanical properties of the scaffold benefited the infiltration,attachment and distribution of L929 mouse fibroblast cells in the pores inside the scaffold.Conclusion Collagen sponge reinforced with surface activated PLA fibers is expected as a promising scaffold material for tissue engineering.

Abstract:Porous collagen scaffold is integrated with surface activated PLLA nanoparticles fabricated by lyophilizing and crosslinking via EDC treatment. In order to prepare surface-modified PLLA nanoparticles, PLLA was firstly grafted with poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) through surface-initiated polymerization of acrylic acid. Nanoparticles of average diameter 316 nm and zeta potential −39.88 mV were obtained from the such-treated PLLA by dialysis method. Porous collagen scaffold were fabricated by mixing PLLA nanoparticles with collagen solution, freeze drying, and crosslinking with EDC. SEM observation revealed that nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in collagen matrix, forming interconnected porous structure with pore size ranging from 150 to 200 μm, irrespective of the amount of nanoparticles. The porosity of the scaffolds kept almost unchanged with the increment of the nanoparticles, whereas the mechanical property was obviously improved, and the degradation was effectively retarded. In vitro L929 mouse fibroblast cells seeding and culture studies revealed that cells infiltrated into the scaffolds and were distributed homogeneously. Compared with the pure collagen sponge, the number of cells in hybrid scaffolds greatly increased with the increment of incorporated nanoparticles. These results manifested that the surface-activated PLLA nanoparticles effectively reinforced the porous collagen scaffold and promoted the cells penetrating into the scaffold, and proliferation.

Abstract:Chitosan–polylactide (CH–PLA) copolymers with various polylactide percentages changing from around 14 to 40wt% were synthesized. CH–PLAs were then blended with type-II collagen to fabricate layered collagen/CH–PLA scaffolds that are potentially suitable for the applications in articular cartilage repair. Based on combinatorial processing techniques involving layer-superposition, thermal melting and freeze-drying, two types of stratified collagen/CH–PLA scaffolds were built. The content of collagen inside the scaffolds altered from the top layer to the bottom layer in a trend contrary to that of chitosan. One of them was fabricated using tripolyphosphate (TPP) as a single crosslinker and another type of scaffold was constructed via a dual-crosslinking pathway using TPP and genipin as two crosslinkers in a designated order. These collagen/CH–PLA scaffolds were found to have graded average pore-size and porosity, gradient swelling index and layer-dependent compressive modulus. The resulting scaffolds were thus partially similar to the articular cartilage extracellular matrix in composition, structure and property. In vitro cell culture on some optimized collagen/CH–PLA scaffolds for a period of time up to 3weeks showed that the scaffolds were able to well support the growth of the seeded cells, suggesting that these collagen/CH–PLA scaffolds have promising potential for articular cartilage repair.

Abstract:Porous collagen/poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) nanoparticle hybrid scaffolds were evaluated for application in the construction of engineered cartilage in terms of biocompatibility and bioactivity. The hybrid scaffolds were prepared by mixing various amounts of surface-modified PLLA nanoparticles with collagen solution, freeze drying, and cross-linking. PLLA nanoparticles that were homogeneously distributed in the collagen matrix effectively improved the mechanical properties of the scaffold without significantly influencing the microstructure, and slowed down degradation. In vitro cell seeding and culture studies showed that cells infiltrated into the scaffolds and dispersed homogeneously. The proliferation of cells in the hybrid scaffold increased with increasing number of PLLA nanoparticles. In addition, strengthening the scaffolds with PLLA nanoparticles helped to resist the shrinkage of the engineered tissue during in vitro culture. The glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content in the hybrid scaffolds also increased with the addition of PLLA nanoparticles. hematoxylin-eo sin (HE), toluidine blue, and immunohistochemical staining and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis of the chondrocyte/scaffold constructions indicated that the hybrid scaffold promoted the formation of cartilage tissue, resulting in engineered cartilage with a higher compressive modulus compared with that of cartilage cultured on a pure collagen scaffold. These results demonstrate that a porous collagen/PLLA nanoparticle hybrid scaffold is biocompatible, making it suitable for cartilage tissue engineering.

Abstract:A previously reported “grafting and coating” method (J. Biomed. Mater. Res. (Appl. Biomater.) 63 (2002) 838) was modified and used to introduce stable collagen layer and incorporate basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on PLLA scaffold surface to prepare tissue engineering scaffold with improved biocompatibility. To make the modification of the 3-D porous PLLA scaffold possible, grafting of polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) onto the PLLA surface was initiated by the –OOH/Fe2+ system instead of the UV light used in the former method. Water soluble carbodimmide chemistry was applied to graft collagen onto the PLLA scaffold surface, followed by physical coating of the collagen solution with or without basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). Surface modification of 2-D PLLA membrane was also done for fundamental understanding of the modification. The –COOH density on/in the PMAA grafted PLLA membrane/scaffold was measured by colorimetric method and the collagen content on/in the collagen immobilized PLLA membrane/scaffold was measured by ninhydrin method. Chondrocyte culturing on the collagen immobilized PLLA surfaces showed significantly improved cell spreading and growth. Incorporation of fibroblast growth factors in the collagen layer further enhanced the cell growth. This convenient and effective method can be used to prepare bioactive scaffolds with extra cellular matrix (ECM)-mimic composition for tissue engineering.

Abstract:An optimal scaffold is crucial for osteochondral regeneration. Collagen and electrospun nanofibers have been demonstrated to facilitate cartilage and bone regeneration, respectively. However, the effect of combining collagen and electrospun nanofibers on osteochondral regeneration has yet to be evaluated. Here, we report that the combination of collagen and electrospun poly-l-lactic acid nanofibers synergistically promotes osteochondral regeneration. We first fabricated bi-layer microporous scaffold with collagen and electrospun poly-l-lactic acid nanofibers (COL-nanofiber). Mesenchymal stem cells were cultured on the bi-layer scaffold and their adhesion, proliferation and differentiation were examined. Moreover, osteochondral defects were created in rabbits and implanted with COL-nanofiber scaffold. Cartilage and subchondral bone regeneration were evaluated at 6 and 12weeks after surgery. Compared with COL scaffold, cells on COL-nanofiber scaffold exhibited more robust osteogenic differentiation, indicated by higher expression levels of OCN and runx2 genes as well as the accumulation of calcium nodules. Furthermore, implantation of COL-nanofiber scaffold seeded with cells induced more rapid subchondral bone emergence, and better cartilage formation, which led to better functional repair of osteochondral defects as manifested by histological staining, biomechanical test and micro-computed tomography data. Our study underscores the potential of using the bi-layer microporous COL-nanofiber scaffold for the treatment of deep osteochondral defects.
3D Porous Acellular Cartilage Matrix Scaffold with Surface Mediated Sustainable Release of TGF-β3 for Cartilage Engineering

Abstract:Acellular tissue matrix scaffolds are much closer to tissue’s complex natural structure and biological characteristics, thus assess great advantages in cartilage engineering. We used rabbit costal cartilage to prepare acellular microfilaments and further 3D porous acellular cartilage scaffold via crosslinking. Poly(l-lysine)/hyaluronic acid (PLL/HA) multilayer film was then built up onto the surface of the resulting porous scaffold. Furthermore, TGF-β3 was loaded into the PLL/HA multilayer film coated scaffold to obtain a 3D porous acellular cartilage scaffold with sustained releasing of TGF-β3 up to 60 days. The success of this project will provide a new way for the treatment of articular cartilage defects. Meanwhile, the anchoring and on-site sustained releasing of growth factors mediated by polyelectrolyte multilayered film can also provide a new method for improving the biocompatibility and the biofunctionality for other implanted biomaterials.

Abstract:For successful tissue engineering of articular cartilage, a scaffold with mechanical properties that match those of natural cartilage as closely as possible is needed. In the present study, we prepared a fibrous silk fibroin (SF)/poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) scaffold via electrospinning and investigated the morphological, mechanical, and degradation properties of the scaffolds fabricated using different electrospinning conditions, including collection distance, working voltage, and the SF:PLLA mass ratio. In addition, in vitro cell-scaffold interactions were evaluated in terms of chondrocyte adhesion to the scaffolds as well as the cytotoxicity and cytocompatibility of the scaffolds. The optimum electrospinning conditions for generating a fibrous SF/PLLA scaffold with the best surface morphology (ordered alignment and suitable diameter) and tensile strength (1.5 MPa) were a collection distance of 20 cm, a working voltage of 15 kV, and a SF:PLLA mass ratio of S50P50. The degradation rate of the SF/PLLA scaffolds was found to be determined by the SF:PLLA mass ratio, and it could be increased by reducing the PLLA proportion. Furthermore, chondrocytes spread well on the fibrous SF/PLLA scaffolds and secreted extracellular matrix, indicating good adhesion to the scaffold. The cytotoxicity of SF/PLLA scaffold extract to chondrocytes over 24 and 48 h in culture was low, indicating that the SF/PLLA scaffolds are biocompatible. Chondrocytes grew well on the SF/PLLA scaffold after 1, 3, 5, and 7 days of direct contact, indicating the good cytocompatibility of the scaffold. These results demonstrate that the fibrous SF/PLLA scaffold represents a promising composite material for use in cartilage tissue engineering.

Abstract:Collagen-based scaffolds lack mechanical strength, flexibility, and tunable pore structure, affecting tissue repair outcomes and restricting their wide clinical application. Here, two kinds of scaffolds were prepared by a combination of vacuum homogenization, natural air drying, water soaking, lyophilization, and crosslinking. Compared with the scaffolds made of collagen molecules (Col-M), the scaffolds made of collagen aggregates (Col-A) exhibited higher mechanical strength (ultimate tensile strength: 1.38 ± 0.26 MPa vs 15.46 ± 1.55 MPa), stronger flexibility, advanced cell adhesion, survival, and proliferation. Subcutaneous implantation in rats showed that Col-A scaffolds promoted cell infiltration, macrophage polarization, and vascularization. Furthermore, the Col-A scaffolds inhibited abdominal bulges due to their adequate mechanical support, and they also promoted vascularized muscle regeneration in a rat abdominal hernia defect model. Our study provides a novel strategy for generating high-strength, flexible, porous collagen-based scaffolds, which can be applied to tissue repair with mechanical strength requirements. It broadens their application range in the field of regenerative medicine.

Microstructure and properties of nano-fibrous PCL-b-PLLA scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering.

Abstract:Nano-fibrous scaffolds which could potentially mimic the architecture of extracellular matrix (ECM) have been considered a good candidate matrix for cell delivery in tissue engineering applications. In the present study, a semicrystalline diblock copolymer, poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-block-poly(L-lactide) (PCL-b-PLLA), was synthesized and utilized to fabricate nano-fibrous scaffolds via a thermally induced phase separation process. Uniform nano-fibrous networks were created by quenching a PCL-b-PLLA/THF homogenous solution to -20 degrees C or below, followed by further gelation for 2 hours due to the presence of PLLA and PCL microcrystals. However, knot-like structures as well as continuously smooth pellicles appeared among the nanofibrous network with increasing gelation temperature. DSC analysis indicated that the crystallization of PCL segments was interrupted by rigid PLLA segments, resulting in an amorphous phase at high gelation temperatures. Combining TIPS (thermally induced phase separation) with salt-leaching methods, nano-fibrous architecture and interconnected pore structures (144 +/- 36 mu m in diameter) with a high porosity were created for in vitro culture of chondrocytes. Specific surface area and protein adsorption on the surface of the nano-fibrous scaffold were three times higher than on the surface of the solid-walled scaffold. Chondrocytes cultured on the nano-fibrous scaffold exhibited a spherical condrocyte-like phenotype and secreted more cartilage-like extracellular matrix (ECM) than those cultured on the solid-walled scaffold. Moreover, the protein and DNA contents of cells cultured on the nanofibrous scaffold were 1.2-1.4 times higher than those on the solid-walled scaffold. Higher expression levels of collagen II and aggrecan mRNA were induced on the nanofibrous scaffold compared to on the solid-walled scaffold. These findings demonstrated that scaffolds with a nanofibrous architecture could serve as superior scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering.
Chemical characteristics and cytocompatibility of collagen-based scaffold reinforced by chitin fibers for bone tissue engineering.

Abstract:Chitin is a kind of seemly material to match PLLA for a scaffold, which may create an appropriate environment for the regeneration of tissues. In this study, we prepared and evaluated a new nano-hydroxyapatite/coliagen/PLLA (nHACP) scaffold reinforced by chitin fibers for bone-tissue engineering. The chitin fibers were crosslinked with PLLA by dicyclohexylcarbodimide (DCC). The chemical characteristics were evaluated by Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The mechanical strength was measured by compressive tests. The fibers, crosslinked with PLLA, could enhance the compressive strength of the scaffold about four times. Human marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) culture showed that the reinforced nHACP scaffolds were more cytocompatible than that without reinforcement. The crosslinks hardly affected the cytocompatibillity of the reinforced scaffolds. The results suggested that the reinforced scaffolds (DCC crosslinked) might be a promising candidate for bone-tissue engineering. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Composite Poly(L-Lactic-Acid)/Silk Fibroin Scaffold Prepared by Electrospinning Promotes Chondrogenesis for Cartilage Tissue Engineering

Abstract:Nanofibrous materials produced by electrospinning have attracted considerable attention from researchers in regenerative medicine. A combination of nanofibrous scaffold and chondrocytes is considered promising for repair of cartilage defect or damage. In the present study, we fabricated a poly(l-lactic-acid) (PLLA)/silk fibroin (SF) nanofibrous scaffold by electrospinning and evaluated its chondrogenic potential. The PLLA/SF nanofibers were characterized for diameter, surface wettability, swelling ratio, and tensile strength. Through in vitro experiments, PLLA/SF scaffold-chondrocyte interactions were investigated relative to the unmodified PLLA scaffold with regard to cellular adhesion, spreading, and proliferation by scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy, and through analyses of DNA, sulfated glycosaminoglycan, and collagen. In addition, hematoxylin-eosin and Alcian blue-nuclear fast red staining were used to observe growth of chondrocytes, and secretion and distribution of cartilage-specific extracellular matrices in the scaffolds. Expressions of cartilage-related genes (collagen II, aggrecan, sox9, collagen I, and collagen X) were detected by real-time quantitative PCR. The PLLA/SF scaffold had better hydrophilicity, and could support chondrocytes adhesion and spreading more effectively than the unmodified PLLA scaffold. Chondrocytes secreted more cartilage-specific extracellular matrices and maintained their phenotype on the PLLA/SF scaffold. So it is concluded that the PLLA/SF scaffold is more conducive to in vitro formation of cartilage-like new tissues than the unmodified PLLA scaffold, and may be a promising material in cartilage tissue engineering.

Abstract:The demand for treating degenerative osteoarthritis is dramatically growing during the past decade due to the increasing aging population. Compared to arthroscopic debridement and injection of lubricating hydrogels, implantation of a cartilage tissue engineering scaffold with a customized architecture and excellent stem cell delivery ability has been deemed as a superior alternative to regenerate defected cartilage tissues. However, relatively low mechanical strength of cell-laden hydrogel limits its potential in treating diseased/defected cartilage or tissues with an anisotropic structure. In this study, a composite cell-laden scaffold composed of three-dimensional (3D) fibrous patterns which was made through near-field electrospinning direct write (NEDW) and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-laden collagen I (COL I) hydrogel was fabricated. The hydrogel acted as a favorable microenvironment to load cells and growth factors to facilitate chondrogenic differentiation while the 3D fibrous patterns made of poly(caprolactone)-reinforced hydrogels and provided the composite scaffolds with a precisely designed micro-architecture. Compared to hydrogel scaffold alone, the fabricated composite scaffold had significantly higher mechanical properties. The composite scaffolds were biocompatible and can accelerate the chondrogenic differentiation of MSCs by up-regulating the expression of SOX9, collagen II (COL II) and aggrecan (ACAN), when transforming growth factor (TGF)-[Formula: see text]1 was loaded in COL I hydrogel. However, the morphology of differentiated cells was not identical to that of the natural chondrocytes, suggesting that the modulation of initial MSC morphology is needed to pursue the target phenotype after the chondrogenic differentiation.

Abstract:Polymer porous scaffolds and hydrogels have been separately employed as analogues of the native extra-cellular matrix (ECM). However, both of these two kinds of materials have their own advantages and shortcomings. In this work, an attempt to combine the advantages of these two kinds of materials is carried out. Poly-L-lactide (PLLA) scaffolds with good mechanical properties were prepared by thermally induced phase separation, which were then filled with hydrogel aiming at entrapment of cells within a support of predefined shape. Agar, which has a function to promote chondrogenesis, was selected to entrap chondrocytes, acting as analogues of native ECM. A straight forward merit of this construct is that both mechanical strength and macroscopic shape, and analogous ECM can be simultaneously achieved. The morphology and distribution of the chondrocytes were studied by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cell growth behaviors were determined by MTT assay and collagen and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) secretion. After culture for 7 and 14 days, the cells in the construct were round and surrounded by the hydrogel. The MTT viability and the cell secretion in the chondrocytes/agar/scaffold construct were also higher than that of the chondrocytes/scaffold construct (control). Gelatin was further introduced into the construct, yielding improved GAG secretion and cytoviability. After implantation in the subcutaneous dorsum of nude mice for 4 weeks, cartilage-like specimens maintaining their original rectangular shapes were harvested. Histological examination showed that new cartilage was regenerated and a large quantity of collagen and GAG were secreted, while the cells in the control PLLA scaffold turned to be fibroblast-like with less secretion of extracellular matrices. The method provides a useful pathway of scaffold preparation and cell transplantation, which can achieve suitable mechanical properties and good cell performance simultaneously. Abstract:A silk fibroin/collagen/hyaluronic acid (SF/COL/HA) composite scaffold was prepared via admixing, crosslinking, and lyophilizing processes. We studied its physicochemical and biological properties, such as water absorption, porosity, weight loss, and biocompatibility. The optimal ratio of SF/COL/HA scaffold was 3:6.5:0.5. Then, the optimal ratio of scaffold incorporating pilose antler polypeptides (PAPs)-PLGA microspheres was prepared, and their compatibility was studied. PAP-SF/COL/HA scaffold had favorable adhesion and proliferation. A rabbit cartilage defect model was established. The repair effect of cartilage defects was observed and evaluated among PAP-SF/COL/HA, SF/COL/HA, and sham operation groups. The defects were almost completely repaired after 13 weeks in the PAP-SF/COL/HA group, thereby indicating that the PAP-SF/COL/HA composite had a favorable effect on articular cartilage repair.

Abstract:Abstract Collagen, characteristic in biomimetic composition and hierarchical structure, boasts a huge potential in repairing cartilage defect due to its extraordinary bioactivities and regulated physicochemical properties, such as low immunogenicity, biocompatibility and controllable degradation, which promotes the cell adhesion, migration and proliferation. Therefore, collagen-based biomaterial has been explored as porous scaffolds or functional coatings in cell-free scaffold and tissue engineering strategy for cartilage repairing. Among those forming technologies, freeze-dry is frequently used with special modifications while 3D-printing and electrospinning serve as the structure-controller in a more precise way. Besides, appropriate cross-linking treatment and incorporation with bioactive substance generally help the collagen-based biomaterials to meet the physicochemical requirement in the defect site and strengthen the repairing performance. Furthermore, comprehensive evaluations on the repair effects of biomaterials are sorted out in terms of in vitro, in vivo and clinical assessments, focusing on the morphology observation, characteristic production and critical gene expression. Finally, the challenge of biomaterial-based therapy for cartilage defect repairing was summarized, which is, the adaption to the highly complex structure and functional difference of cartilage. Abstract:Electrospinning has recently received much attention, showing great potential as a novel scaffold fabrication method for cartilage tissue engineering. In this study, we developed a biodegradable hybrid nanofibrous membrane of collagen and poly(L-lactic acid-co-epsilon-caprolactone) (PLCL, 75:25) by electrospinning for cartilage tissue engineering. The structure and cell affinity of collagen/PLCL membranes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and microscopy. The sandwiched cell-scaffold constructs were kept in culture for 1 week in vitro and then implanted subcutaneously into nude mice for 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Gross observation, histological and immunohistological evaluation, glycosaminoglycan (GAG) analysis and Young's modulus measurements were performed at each post-implantation time-point. Electrospun collagen/PLCL nanofibrous membranes could mimic the natural ECM and have good cell affinity. All the cell-scaffold constructs showed cartilage-like morphology with a white, smooth and glistening appearance after 4, 8 and 12 weeks of implantation. The abundance of GAG containing cartilaginous matrix appeared to increase greatly with implantation time. Furthermore, well-distributed cartilage and nearly no empty areas were observed in constructs even at 12 weeks post-implantation. In addition, the mechanical properties of the engineered cartilage after 12 weeks of implantation could reach 83% of that of native rabbit auricular cartilage. These results indicate that collagen/PLCL nanofibrous membranes with the sandwich construction model may serve as a new approach for cartilage tissue engineering.
